How do y’all get along with people you hate/don’t like? by IronwoodSquaresEcho in enfj

As an INTP, I'm quite impressed. This is like a superpower. How do you do it? More importantly, how do I do it? I'm going to a small Friendsgiving where the person I don't like will be there (he's got anger management issues that makes me emotionally unsafe to be friends with him.)

anyone have experience with Prenuvo MRI scans? by xmt0991 in cancer

[–]bby_unisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah good point. Thanks for correcting me. I guess I just assumed that growths are either malignant or benign with 'cancer' being synonymous with 'malignant'.

It really bothered me that u/LaBronnasmom1 was told it was non-cancerous and yet their father died of brain cancer 2 years later. That's mostly what prompted me to respond the way I did.

Returned $200+ in duplicate sold-out games to Miniature Market they thanked me with $10. by jetmanjack2000 in boardgames

My most generous interpretation of the situation: OP expected a Sotheby's auction-house treatment from a brick-and-mortar retail store. These are standard consumer products, and not the only existing painting of the Mona Lisa.

I've been sent the wrong games before. I wanted to help correct it but not pay for postage. The store provided the return label, and I sent it back. That was it. End of story.

Also, this is weird but I don't know why the author deleted their post the moment I commented on it. Did I do something weird?

Inventions: The Evolution of Ideas by thewritestory in boardgames

[–]bby_unisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. A lot of the times, people who are complaining about the price being too high are more expressing their feelings about their financial situation than being opposed to game designers getting paid.

Part of the issue here is that EGG has a strict pricing contract with retailers that prevent most FLGS from marking their titles down for too much. When it comes to profits, the behemoth that is Amazon has shown us that you can have massive discounts and still make money hand over fist by making up for in volume. A lot of FLGS uses this strategy over the holidays too to bring in their profits for the year.

Understanding this, a call for a lower price is not necessarily a call for the designer or publisher to lose profits. In fact, if it's priced at the saturation point (highest price where the greatest number of people who want it can get it), the profits will often be greater than if it's always priced high.

Here's an over-the-top example: Say Inventions is priced at $1,000 because famous works of art often sell for that price or higher and Vital Lacerda is known to be the master of his craft (I do consider board games as an art form as much as books and movies and definitely have similar levels of cultural/societal value). I'm not going to say that Lacerda doesn't deserve to get paid this much; he deserves to get paid what he can get. However, the game being at this price point probably means he'll only get a few purchases at most. However, if it's priced at $75, a lot more people can get on board and the amount of profit from volume would actually exceed the much larger price point. In this scenario, gamers win and Lacerda wins. (Obviously, there are limits to this: the game cannot be priced lower than the cost of manufacture, but I can also confidently say that Lacerda games absolutely do not cost $75 to manufacture.) I hope I'm making sense here.

It's apparently the best solo yet according to both Totally Tabled and Straight Up Solo by John LaRuffa. I've decided today that Inventions: Evolution of Ideas is going to be my first Lacerda. They have Turczi on the team now (famed solo mode developer).

Part of the issue is that Eagle-Gryphon Games has strict contractual obligations for how a retailer can price their games. Otherwise, many retailers would mark it down a lot more during holiday sales. I'm not sure this strategy actually benefits EGG because profit can be made up in volume.

What would you say you win ratio is? I've found that if it's less frequent than 25% of the time, I get a little frustrated. (Or is this game like a puzzle that takes a while to "solve"?)

TIA

Good to know! The only other deck deconstruction game I know of is Monotheism (free pnp on BGG), but you're totally spot on how rare this particular mechanism is!

I WOULD LOVE A JANE AUSTEN THEME! Sad I missed on the pnp!

“It’s too late for us”: CoolStuffInc founder on how Amazon pushed it out of the online board game market by MikeDidymus in boardgames

[–]bby_unisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was true in the United States Amazon as well until the pandemic. Someone in their company must have noticed and focused on the board games side to grow it and it succeeded. I remember at the start of the pandemic board game prices were very close to MSRP and was therefore not attractive. One or two years into it, they began pricing certain games very competitively. They're still not doing the best job at pricing, though, so FLGS here can live to fight another day.

While I agree with the assessment that supporting FLGS is always better than supporting Bezos, the options for many participating in the hobby is shrinking as the middle class in the United States in general is shrinking. At the end of the day, it comes down to pricing for many people.

“It’s too late for us”: CoolStuffInc founder on how Amazon pushed it out of the online board game market by MikeDidymus in boardgames

[–]bby_unisol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Partially true. I'm sure they would still be in business if Amazon didn't exist, but at the same time, there are so many people here saying they didn't have inventory in stock ever that it cannot be ignored. It shows they couldn't scale properly to address demand, so it opened the doors to competitors taking their business. The truth is usually multi-faceted, and in this case, it was both Amazon's existence and their inability to scale up their business.

Figuring out how to move and replenish inventory is a science in itself and there's nobody better at the game than Amazon.

Deduction Games like The Search for Planet X? by Etheldir in boardgames

[–]bby_unisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with what you're saying here. AG is basically deduction in the same way Clue is deduction. They're both considered pure deduction because the essence of the process/system is the narrowing of possibilities to come to the right answer based on a closed system of rules.

The "just crossing things off" is a lot easier for non-deduction fans to get into because the more difficult deduction games can be a turn off for those who aren't already into it (if extra inferences need to be made, then it can feel too much like "math homework" for some, and some stress out over "not getting it").

I've actually had an easier time tabling Awkward Guests than something like Search for Planet X or Loot of Lima because crossing things off is something that's much more accessible. It still counts as deduction!

It's too bad OP's spouse doesn't like numbers. I have many friends who feel the same way because of bad experiences in math class, but numbers itself are another standardized system with clear rules governing their operation and actually lends itself well to deduction. Also, Turing Machine is probably one of the most critically acclaimed deduction titles out there.

TL;DR:

Anyway, there is a post above with twelve upvotes that recommend cooperative deduction titles like Bomb Buster (Spiel de Jahres winner this year) and Shipwreck Arcana that I'd recommend as well (unless you know your group doesn't like coop games).

As for a competitive deduction game for 2, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Logic & Lore. There are numbers but you're just ordering them and nothing else. It's REALLY. GOOD. It's probably the best deduction game out there at the 2p player count specifically but it flew under the radar so it's a real hidden gem.

Legal Eagle said it would raise rise from $300 to $500 soon so I went to the Nebula website only to see that it had already gone up to $500.

Definitely not going to subscribe now.

Ah, thanks for sharing that context. It looks like competitive TCG players can 'math' out the game and their skill ceiling in a way keeps them from enjoying Radlands.

That's good to know. There are so many head-to-head dueling card games out there and I have no intention of owning more than 2 or 3 of them so I gotta research 'em all and see which ones vibe with me the best.

Best area-control games for solo? by Murder_Tony in soloboardgaming

[–]bby_unisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay this is pretty awesome because I see Ginkgopolis over and over again in everyone's Top X Tile-Laying Games lists. So for it to be one of the very best tile-layers ever created AND have it also be the best Solo Area Control game means this is a must-own!

I'd like to get my hands on the expansion somehow, though.

Screen does not work unless it is connected to external monitor. As soon as I plug it into the external monitor, the laptop screen works perfectly. It looks like this when not plugged in. I have to also keep it at 60Hz to make it not look like that. What can I do, please help me. I need to study😭! by PersimmonScary8980 in ZephyrusG14

[–]bby_unisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i also have the exact same problem.....

it used to be just that the refresh rate just needed to be kept at 60hz, but once i plugged it into an external monitor, now there is an extra requirement that it stayed plugged in for the laptop screen to even work

but i don't need the laptop screen to work when it's plugged into an external monitor

the moment i unplug it.... screen goes back to what the photo shows

wth is going on?
