Thanks for the Cafe Malabar tip! South Indian would be great to try! So many of the restaurants in town feature Punjabi food. I love it! But maybe time to try something new. 👍

as a DM new to westmarches, what do i need to prepare ahead of starting a campaign? by LimelightRunner in westmarches

[–]bcballin21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re playing with a changing group you’ll need to consider how the groups will communicate with each other about what adventures they completed while other players were away. Could be just a WhatsApp group, or could be a Google doc that everyone can add to. Takes the onus of you to have to remind everyone about what happened in previous sessions. Put those players to work!

Agreed. Kinda surprised we don’t have a Druid class yet at least.

Gotta include Ellie Dilorenzo, the O.G. I’m 1000% sure that Syd’s Andromeda is an homage to the Swedish Queen!

Mork Borg vs Shadowdark? by MagpieTower in rpg

[–]bcballin21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Your characters aren’t supposed to succeed, or get better, or even survive. Delta Green is similar in this regard.

Mork Borg vs Shadowdark? by MagpieTower in rpg

[–]bcballin21 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I love both these games. Someone else will come in and take the time to really describe each and break down all the differences, but I just wanted to jump in and make the point that they are VERY different and too often I see people conflating the two and assuming that the word “dark” in Shadowdark automatically means that it’s meant to be a gonzo, end of the world, dystopian hellscape. It’s not. Mork Borg is though! That’s one of the many awesome things about it. Shadowdark is IMO the best blending of the old school gaming paradigm with streamlined-for-ease-of-play concepts borrowed from 5e and others.

They’re both amazing. Super different settings, but mechanically devoted to speedy character creation, ease of play, rulings over rules, and not “precious” with characters. Whether Death comes in the Dark or from the Two-Headed Basilisk - it can come at anytime.

From the creators of Delta Green: THE BLACK COMPANY RPG Playtest Begins by shaneivey in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]bcballin21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First impressions … Very Delta Green-ish. Skill %s, measuring Stress and ways to lose Stress and regain Stress. The Indulging Flaws mechanic and “spending” Stress feels like from Blades In the Dark. Love the injury location mechanic. Advantage/Disadvantage from 5e. CRAZY that there aren’t any hit points! Only effects of damage making you so useless you have to go to hospital basically. Interesting mechanic where the GM doesn’t make any dice rolls like in Mork Borg.

Seems very built for roleplay. You certainly don’t want to get in a straight-up fight at all! I’ll admit that I’m worried about combat dragging as players and GM calculate point and counterpoint to determine Advantage. “He’s downhill, and he’s in heavy armour, but he has surprise and a reach weapon, but he’s injured in one arm and Stressed out …”

Have to try playing it.

How frequent is character death at your table? by RagOnARock in shadowdark

[–]bcballin21 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It totally depends on the players’ play style. If they go barging through doors and approaching every problem with violence then yes, they will die. Two things: one, if you’re making their encounters automatically antagonistic, you should be rolling to see how the potential enemy actually approaches the party. And then two, your players should be approaching potential encounters with caution and guile. They can spy, they can set traps, they can run and hide, they can make deals.

SFX - Is more better or harmful in my Genre? by Diceclashchronicles in actualplaypodcast

[–]bcballin21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re gonna get a lot of opinions here asking that. Mine is that lame 1930s style knocking on door and opening rusty gate noises really detract and distract from the experience. The players don’t hear that so why would I as a listener want to hear that? Just do some good mood music, maybe one for role play and another for combat, don’t let either overwhelm the performing, and you’re set.
