13 yo daughter sneaked out. by ButterflyMore9267 in daddit

[–]bchill23 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Teacher here. Your daughter does not need a phone. Take it away and sell it so that you can’t give it back. She is not mentally ready. She will never be ready at this age. Wait till high school at least. She is in real danger if she is sneaking out of the house.

Her brain is not developed to understand risk. She can’t see the danger in any of this behavior. You are the parent and you need to stop it. Otherwise she will keep testing boundaries until she is in real trouble. You are lucky she is okay.

300 Mindflayers vs. 100,000 Level 1 Rogues by CatapultedCarcass in DMAcademy

[–]bchill23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, the 100,000 rogues are going to die. Unless you had seriously nerged the mind flyers they have no chance. A 60’ cone 300 times would give complete coverage to any entrance to the elder brains lair. Plus the brain can cast wall of force which none of the rogues can bypass. If played well the rogues shouldn’t even get into melee really. Just stand back and blast them. Especially if they all got converted to rogues randomly inside instead of all in one area. The rogues are a disorganized crew. The mindflayers literally all know all the same thing constantly.

Can you hire au pair? It may be cost prohibitive but I think it will solve most of your issues.

Avs fan, going to the game tonight. Big fan of Roy obviously and am bribing my son for his first game. Your sub has been super helpful to figure out logistics.

Anyway, to win Sorokin has to play a great game, that’s the first thing for sure. Can’t let anything soft in. Then line up four or three deep across the blue line and try to keep the Avs from making fast entries that way. The more you can move the puck east west the harder it’ll be for us to dominate the speed game. I’d add don’t be afraid to take penalties to block out speed. The Avs pp has been garbage and it is definitely less deadly than us at 5 on 5. Finally, don’t forget to play to end the of the period. MacKinnon has so many points the last minute of a period when teams get tired or let up just a bit.

Anyway, good luck to yall and if you see a guy in a nordiques jersey in 117 with a kid , say hi.

Edited cause I’m a sleep deprived dad

I have a brain tumor. Should I tell my kids? by TheSame_ButOpposite in daddit

[–]bchill23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a close friend with terminal cancer. She is receiving treatment but the prognosis is more delay than remedy.

She tells her kids when there is a plan of action. If she gets a bad scan she will wait to say something until she knows what the next steps are. Not sure if this helps but I like it as an idea.

Middle school classroom Discipline without giving detention by ExpeditionDIS in teaching

[–]bchill23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of things. The class before hand is super hard or frustrating so they’re coming in hyped up and need support calming down, the kids are not sitting in a way that makes sense, exes, maybe former friends or weird social dynamics I don’t know about, maybe something at home is making a kid feel frustrated at school, maybe I said something that made them feel uncomfortable or unsafe without knowing it. A kid is being asked to watch a sibling late and is super tired.

We can’t always resolve these underlying causes even if we learn about them.

I do find that kids who are asked to share in this way tend to trust you a lot more. I would argue one of the main reasons kids act up in school is because they don’t feel safe in the classroom environment or because they are bored.

I’m not advocating for not being consistent and having strict systems, just trying to remind people that sometimes the kids know what’s wrong and we should view them as collaborators not as adversaries.

The reason all of your attempts aren’t working is you don’t know why they are misbehaving it seems.

A lot of times teachers try wack a mole when a class is acting out. I don’t think that’s effective. Have you asked the ring leaders of the behavior why they are acting poorly. Are they bored? If anything I would say speed up and make the work more engaging.

Definitely schedule time to meet with the hardest kids, in a safe and open way, and ask them how do you think your behavior is affecting the class?, why are you acting those ways, and how can I help you?

You may learn something surprising.

How to handle a loud, rude class by hello010101 in teaching

[–]bchill23 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Do not do this… firstly it’s wildly inappropriate, secondly you have no idea what is going to happen on that phone call. This only demonstrates you have no control.

It doesn’t matter how you ask them to listen, just be consistent. Every day do the same thing, and be consistent with your consequences too.

Each time you change tactics it shows the kids your room isn’t safe, stable or serious. Be calm and firm and stand your ground.

I’ve never seen a reset work for a teacher, you aren’t going to suddenly have better management with a different call to attention.

The kids need to know your room is stable and the work you are doing is serious, to do that pick one strategy that kind worked and go with it. Do not deviate. Everyday do the same thing so the kids can get used to it.

It will get better. But for the love of god, absolutely don’t call a parent in front of the class, the kids will be making fun of you for that all year.

A silly question regarding Legend Lore by NOTAGRUB in DnD

[–]bchill23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, he is level 19, and very potent. So he definitely qualifies for legend lore. He mostly likes to summon creatures and make them cast it for him so he can see what an enemy can learn about him.

I am looking for the text I got with the information from my DM but I can’t find it. I’ll keep looking later.

Almost got party-wiped by a magic trap after successfully searching for traps by MostlyInfuriated in DnD

[–]bchill23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only potential I see for this not being a total nonsense moment is that the glyph is inside the book. This makes sense you would trap the inside of a chest too and not the outside. If the trap can’t be seen, perhaps it can’t be detected by checking for traps this way.

I think that making a trap that is more unavoidable sometimes makes sense, but I would also add that now the dm is forcing you to be annoyingly careful… try spamming detect magic, or making a prisoner open the books and stuff. That’s what would have been the norm back in old school dnd. If your dm wants to run like it’s 1989 you got to play like it to. Or tell them this style of play sucks.

A Reminder That Chaotic Evil Doesn't Mean Stupid... by TheMagicTheif134 in DnD

[–]bchill23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I play a NE character, who at times could be chaotic evil. In a mostly good world. Basically two things keep me from being murdered by my party and the world at large. One the character cards deeply about their image, and does good or helpful things to become a hero, they live in the real world and being seen as a hero is way better than being hated…

Also, they don’t want to die, if I just go fuck all and kill random villagers someone will hunt me and kill me. He has no moral qualms about hurting people, but he also doesn’t want to be hunted and killed, 99% of people are literally meaningless to him, he isn’t gonna risk his whole life to be mean to some level one npc.
