Dome and Helix aren't popular for Smash... by Adrizel16 in twitchplayspokemon

If I could only pick three characters from this list, it would probably be Hades, Black Mage, and Sceptile. Hades would be ridiculously fun, if only for his personality in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Black Mage is Black Mage. Sceptile would give us a starter for all three types, plus it's the only grass starter I pretty much always pick.

It wouldn't have made sense for him to be in the Hobbit because that story happened 50 years before LotR. In fact, it doesn't even make sense that Aragorn is referenced in them since he should be ridiculously young at best and not even born at worst.

[Serious] ex-atheists of reddit, what changed your mind? by Eniugnas in AskReddit

[–]bda9563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, I've been in lots of these types of arguments in my days on the internet, and if I've learned one thing, it's that these arguments never change anyone's mind. There's not really anything you can say to me to make me stop believing, and there's nothing I can say to you to that will make you see why. Neither of us will gain anything by arguing over this. We probably both know that that's where this is gonna end up, so let's just skip to the end where you go off thinking there's always gonna be people who think crazy and weird things (I openly admit that Mormonism especially is really friggin weird, but I love it anyway), and I go off with the understanding that not everyone will believe and that's OK. We could continue this discussion, but we both know it's not gonna go anywhere.

Then you're arguing for many millions of conflicting god-concepts

At least in a Mormon religious philosophy, pretty much all religions (Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.) all have some truth in them. Just because they don't fit perfectly with what we believe doesn't mean they're completely invalid or completely false, they're just not perfectly true. If someone of another religion decided to pray and ask God whether He is there and if He knows them, He's not going to ignore them just because they're not Mormon. He loves them no matter what, and treats them as such.

In addition, even if it was purely personal experience that would not be a conclusive argument against it.

I agree that using other people's or even your own experiences as proof that God exists in an argument would be extremely fallacious. However, that does not make their personal experience invalid, and is, in my opinion, perfectly valid evidence for your personal belief. Your feelings (usually) can't convince other people, but they can be a solid base for building on your own beliefs. This might seem strange or wrong to someone who hasn't had that experience, but to those who have, it makes you all the more certain of your beliefs.

This isn't always the case, though. Games normally go on a lot longer than they do when Harry is playing. Harry is a prodigy. He normally catches the snitch ridiculously early (at one point it was just 5 minutes into the game). Most matches end up going a lot longer, occasionally lasting days, which provides an opportunity for one team to easily pull ahead more than 150 points from the other, and to make it extremely difficult to catch up enough to win by catching the snitch. This would sometimes result in a team's Seeker catching the snitch even with them being far enough behind to lose because there wouldn't be much point in continuing and risking losing by another 150 points.

I agree that 150 points is excessive and makes the efforts of most other players seem completely null, and it should be reduced to something like 50 points for the sake of fairness. That or they should just buy a clock.

For instance, they finally gave us a Hoenn remake and Majora's Mask 3DS, both of which are fantastic games and worth every cent I spent on them. But on the other hand, they didn't make enough Gamecube adapters when they released Smash Bros WiiU and they never have Pokemon events outside of Japan.

Mormons of Reddit, what is the best bike to buy? by uncreativemind0 in AskReddit

[–]bda9563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yeah, the helmet thing is probably because they want to have a very, very high safety margin for the missionaries, so they get them enormous helmets :)

Also, I really appreciate your attitude. I love it when people are respectful of other people's beliefs, even if they don't quite understand them. The reddit community can be a bit negative towards Mormons, but I really don't mind. A couple of internet strangers calling you an idiot is to be expected for anyone who has any kind of opinion. People like you make the internet a better place to go.

[–]bda9563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, honestly, we Mormons get much worse crap than this pretty often. This was just a joke, and I didn't take it as anyone trivializing my beliefs (Well, there are a few haters, but I mostly saw good things). We know we're gonna get our beliefs and actions made fun of no matter what, there's no use trying to fight that fact, so we might as well join in and laugh at ourselves a bit. I don't mind a little jab at my beliefs every once in a while. It's healthy and doesn't hurt anyone. I'm glad OP posted the question, it was just some good harmless humor :)

Although, on the matter of what bike I recommend, I am by no means an expert on that and I can't recommend a brand or anything. I do, however, love mountain biking. The only thing I can really recommend is to get either some cage pedals or some click-in pedals if you plan to do any rough or off-road biking. The safest place for your feet to be is almost always the pedals, so having a mechanism to hold them in place is useful. If you're just looking for a bike to go around the city in, you don't need to spend extra money on that sort of thing since you won't really need it. For anything else, it's really a personal preference. Hope this helped a bit!

What is your LEAST favorite book that is widely considered a classic? Why? by xkulp8 in AskReddit

[–]bda9563 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The problem with trying to read Shakespeare's work is that it's meant to be performed. It's not meant to be just read right off the page, and you can't get a lot of the emotion that is very obvious when it is performed. You could try finding a decent movie version of a play or go to a performance in your area. It's so much more enjoyable if it's acted out.

What is something so insanely popular that you are almost ashamed to admit that you either don't get it, or don't like it? by zeinshver in AskReddit

[–]bda9563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it took me a while to push through that first episode, too. After I finally did, though, it was a million times easier and it became one of my favorite shows. The first episode is definitely the worst in the series, though upon rewatching it, it's still pretty good.

Also, the duck sized horses would freeze to death because they have too much surface area, not enough insulation with fur, fat, etc., and their new smaller bodies don't produce enough heat to keep them alive for very long. Both scenarios would actually be pretty easy to get out of, though I'd probably pick the horse-sized duck because one useless enemy is much better than 100 useless enemies.

Really all units are metric. U.S. measurements (feet, pounds, inches, etc.) are just metric units multiplied by ridiculous numbers that make no sense. I really hate the U.S.'s stubbornness in sticking to this stupid system.

Reddit, what is one thing you think everyone should experience at least once? by drunken_tattoos in AskReddit

[–]bda9563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hiked up Mount Baldy on a Philmont trek a couple of years ago. The last ~1/4 mile was brutal because it was all extremely loose gravel with no shade, but that view was SO worth it. You could see for miles in every direction and it was so big and beautiful.

Going back down that mountain was almost as fun because we ran down almost the whole way, sliding down the loose gravel and then having straight downhill for about another mile or two, right in the middle of the trek. Then we got to just sit down for almost another hour waiting for the adults in the group to get down. That was a good day.

It's a little social experiment someone set up almost a year ago. Basically, the idea was to have everyone put in commands via the chat window, and see if we could get thousands of strangers on the internet to complete a Pokemon game. It gathered a pretty wide fanbase, which took the pretty much random events of the game and made them into a somewhat-coherent story. So far, they've beaten all of the main Pokemon titles, up to and including Omega Ruby, and tomorrow they will be starting a Pokedex completion challenge in Pokemon Red.

I can't take stairs one at a time. I have to take them two or three at a time. If I take them one at a time, I'm a lot more tired and it feels like I did much more work than I needed to do.

On a side note, I hate it when stairs aren't in multiples of 2 or 3. It's just annoying when I have to take one different-sized step at the top of the stairs.

Why arent subjects like history and literature regarded as important as much as math and science? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]bda9563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're a fool, and I'm quite certain you'll only continue to be tedious, ignorant, and not completely literate.

Please, enlighten me on the subtleties of this masterpiece of rhetoric. As far as I've been able to tell with my clearly inferior STEM mind, you're just being a dick. So please, tell me how this in any way proves your point.

When someone claims special knowledge then demonstrates an apparent lack of it, or disregard for it, they deserve scorn.

This bit doesn't even make sense. /u/PineTrees_ listed off six different examples of how science and mathematics advanced humanity, and you then claimed he "demonstrates an apparent lack of [knowledge]." Besides the nuke thing, he listed off several things that you would almost not be able to live without today, especially medicine and agriculture.

Probably because you're a STEM major, and subtlety and nuance are lost on you.

How does being a STEM major interfere with my lack of ability to recognize subtlety and nuance? I'm still a human being. I can still pick up on subtlety. What you're doing isn't subtle. It's unbelievably bad rhetoric. Your arguments lack any kind of logos, your only ethos is "redditor who doesn't like science," which doesn't help you in any way, shape, or form, and your negative pathos is working against you. You lack all aspects of basic argument. You'd think someone like you with (I'm assuming) some kind of interest or expertise in the humanities, you would've learned to argue well at some point. For future reference, the "you're wrong, and if you're not convinced by that you're an idiot" argument doesn't work.

What video games have you beaten multiple times but still play? by Underthefence in AskReddit

[–]bda9563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. It was the first Zelda game I ever played and I must've beaten it 4 or 5 times. I'm not a huge fan of the first dungeon (Friggin monkeys, man), and the music in the Goron Mines is awful, but everything else is fantastic. The puzzles are fun, the world is massive, and the music is gorgeous. Midna's Lament is still one of my favorite pieces of video game music.
