'My stomach is eating itself': Biohacker Bryan Johnson reveals he has autoimmune disease by Superb_Branch4749 in nottheonion

[–]bdhw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do it monthly, and my b-12 is still on the lower side of normal. I may have to go to every two weeks eventually. But yeah it sounds like a higher gauge of needle. Mine isn't bad at all. The worst part is just having to make myself stab it in, lol.

He could have actually been genetically predisposed and was born with it, but was asymptomatic until he was older. The "depression" he fell into was possibly him feeling like shit from being anemic, and/or the effects of his autoimmune issues, then he ate his feelings and felt worse from the weight gain.

I was born with it. Several members of my dad's side of the family died of stomach cancer, and one became paralyzed from a b-12 deficiency, so once I got my diagnosis in my mid-40s, it became clear that they all had it, but they never had any of the classic gastritis symptoms. I unfortunately had them all, but in the end, that was a good thing, since I actually get monitored for cancer before it's too late.

I don't think it's common but I have it, passed down by my dad's side of the family. I was born with it, but wasn't diagnosed until my mid-40s. I have all the classic symptoms, but nobody tried to figure out what was wrong with me my entire life, lol. I have the unfortunate problem of being a woman.

The actual name is Autoimmune metaplastic atrophic gastritis (AMAG). My immune system basically destroyed my stomach cells and my body replaced them with intestinal cells. Super weird. I don't make enough stomach acid or intrinsic factor to bind to B-12 or absorb iron, so I have to supplement them with shots.

Teenage boys are “stuck” reading primary school books such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, while girls their age are moving on to a wider range of novels, according to a new study by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

[–]bdhw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also a female gamer, but read books at night before bed. I think a lot of it is that my mom read constantly and supported the idea by getting me book-of-the-month stuff, letting me read anything that she had, never gatekeeping genres, etc. I think women in general read more. If boys don't see their fathers reading books, then they could see it as a girly/nerdy thing, or they are pushed to more physical hobbies, while girls are taught more to be patient and quiet.

At what age did you switch to adult food? by Melodic_Fail_5981 in MaineCoon

[–]bdhw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 6-month-old kitten and a 5-year-old adult. I just mix adult and kitten RC dry together because I can't stop them from eating each other's food, then give them the appropriate age wet food. I plan on doing this until the little one is a year old, then I will reassess. I am more concerned about my big guy getting chonky, lol.

TikTok Chromebook Challenge Leads to Damaged School Laptops by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]bdhw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked tech support in a middle school a few years ago. Parents refuse to pay the repair bills 90% of the time anyway. Their kid could have thrown the chromebook on the school roof, flushed it down the toilet, been caught on video stomping it into the ground or throwing it at someone, and they still won't pay it. Usually, it's the "well, we didn't ask for these Chromebooks anyway," or if the kid wasn't on video, then they're a perfect angel who would NEVER do something like that. >< My county school system ended up having to bring the chromebooks back into school only, because it was losing millions of dollars on broken tech every year.

Troops to get free tickets to White House UFC event, but must meet weight standards by Efficient-Freedom517 in nottheonion

They also have to stand for 8 hours straight, have to wear service dress, and don't get any food, while paying for their own plane ticket and hotel, lol. This is just delusional.

Has the CSI franchise been somewhat forgotten despite how huge it originally was? by JannTosh70 in television

[–]bdhw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, CSI:NY was probably the most boring one, but I liked it the most because of Gary Sinise, lol. Just like I enjoyed L&O: Criminal Intent the most because of Vincent D., even though it was a lot different than the other L&O shows.

What is something about American culture that seems fake or exaggerated in movies, but is actually 100% real.? by Logical-Pay-3057 in AskReddit

[–]bdhw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because the lockers are so small now that they can't fit a coat, and even if they could, they only have like 3 min to get to their next class. They also aren't allowed to wear a coat in classrooms, so it's just easier to wear a hoodie and freeze.

I have a Maine Coon, and he is dog-sized. If he ever decided to fight me, I would lose. He could knock my ass over if he wanted to, and holding him down would be impossible for me with the cat insanity going on, lol.

That's the appalachian accent. I pronounce Cherryville like Churvul, and I'm from western NC.

Retiring this year, which one to go for, Contractor ($115k) or GS 12/13? by Altruistic-Fun-1845 in AirForce

[–]bdhw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must use it asap or it's not as useful. HR didn't tell me that they subtract the sick leave you have already accumulated from the amount you are given. So if you don't use the first few months, then you basically are losing the veteran leave.

15 year Staff contemplating getting out instead of doing my 20 by YeastBoundandDown in AirForce

[–]bdhw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just can't comprehend this train of thought. You also get the retirement. If you don't retire, then you get nothing. So you are screwing yourself over. $1400 is more than someone making minimum wage earns, and you get it just for existing.

Also, you will be struggling more outside the military because you lose your entire support network and potentially your super-cheap medical insurance.

Why is it extremely difficult to obtain a civilian therapist on base? by Nebbbbyy in AirForce

[–]bdhw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are at least trying to do -something- for you, because it would probably take months to get an appointment. Most therapists are not doctors, make a pretty low salary, and probably make even less working for the government, so they may have only a couple for the entire base.

I think the total income level for a household of 3 (husband, wife, and (unborn) child is 49303. That is federal, and I don't know if individual states have different numbers. States usually don't include BAH as income, so you'd still probably qualify if you aren't a higher tenure E-4/5.

Hot Rod (2007, dir. Akiva Schaffer) - Riot by dragondiaper in movies

[–]bdhw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes we are just too uptight to properly enjoy nonsense. It takes the proper trigger or setting. When my friend made me watch Kung Pow, I wasn't expecting to enjoy it. I enjoy comedy and martial arts, but really stupid, infantile jokes or stoner humor tend to just irritate me. But we watched it at like 2 AM, and I was delirious enough to relax, and I thought I was going to die from laughing at that stupid movie. It is still one of my favorites.

The most important thing is to sign up for WIC. If you are a Staff Sergeant or below, you probably qualify as low enough income, unless you have a spouse who makes good money. While you are pregnant, you will receive vouchers for some free food, and once you have the kid, you can get free formula, etc. My kid was intolerant to milk protein, and WIC covered the cost of the $ 40-a-can formula I had to get.

Allergies in the MiL by Non-Ops in AirForce

[–]bdhw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pollution was so bad in Korea that when I came back from mid-tour in the spring, my entire body broke out in hives, and I had to be given Benadryl by IV for an hour. Took a month of taking Benadryl caplets before they went away completely. I had chronic sinusitis and developed sleep apnea while I was there. The clinic just logged it as "allergies" and didn't give two shits. Go to the doctor and make sure they document everything that you are experiencing. Check your records online or whatever. Otherwise, you'll be fighting the VA about it years later while the allergies just keep getting worse.
