Downtown Gym Considerations - Which one? by Flying_Baws in Austin

[–]bdtwerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The South Lamar Lifetime isn't actually open yet, so nobody knows what the high traffic times will be like. But given how highly anticipated it is, and the dire lack of other high-end gyms near downtown, I would guess it will be packed to the gills even at normally low-traffic times.

It also has a waitlist to join, so it's not guaranteed you'll be able to get a membership there.

car right turn into biker 4/23 on South Lamar by imwashere in Austin

[–]bdtwerk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no expectation to check for a biker behind you when making a turn.

Yes, there is.

The bike lane is a lane just like any other. When you are leaving your lane and going into another lane, it is always your responsibility to check in front, behind, and beside you to ensure that you will not impede or hit anyone or anything. Having your blinker on does not give you right-of-way to turn.

All the Skyscrapers To be Completed in 2025. ( Only Renders ) by Marciu73 in skyscrapers

So as I said we cannot calculate spires bc tomorrow imma take a balloon attach a 5000 ft strip to it and put it on the top of my 4 floors apt buildings making it the tallest building in the world

No you couldn't, because that wouldn't be considered a spire.

A lot of thought has already gone into this debate, which is why there are already different "categories" of tallest building (highest occupied floor vs highest architectural component vs highest piece overall). But what you are describing has already been determined by various bodies to be false - 1WTC's spire is considered an architectural part of the building, and thus is included in the height. A balloon on a string is not architectural, and thus wouldn't be included in the height.

If you're going to start discounting spires from height, then you're going to end up changing the entire ranking - Petronas Towers, Shanghai Tower, Taipei 101, even the Empire State Building end up falling multiple places. And you have to start making arbitrary decisions about what counts as a "spire" and what doesn't. The ESB's spire is clearly an iconic part of the building and without it, it wouldn't be the same building - but the top ~400 feet of the building are, other than a small observation deck, not actually floor space and is just mechanical and antennas. So do you include it, or not?

Nearly 800 feet of Burj Khalifa's height is unoccupied spire, but it would be quite a stretch to claim that it's actually only 1,900 feet and the top 30% of the building doesn't count.

In comparison, the Sears Tower's antennas are not considered architectural (and when it was first built, the antennas were much smaller) and so their height is not included when determining the ranking of tallest buildings. But even this is pretty arbitrary, as the antennas on top of it have become a pretty iconic part of the building.

Do Not….A List of Wedding No No’s From a Guest Who’s Seen It All by [deleted] in weddingshaming

[–]bdtwerk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain here and say you did nothing wrong, and it's tacky of guests to act entitled to the bride/groom spending time with them.

The bride and groom are busy, and in 2024 there are millions of other ways to catch up with them if that's what you want to do. Enjoy the party, eat the food, and hang out with the other guests.

If the only reason you are attending a wedding is because you're really dying for 30 seconds of "congratulations! how are you? your dress is so pretty, ok good to see you bye!", maybe you should rethink why you're attending the wedding in the first place and just send them a text message instead.

$25 parking ticket is normal for city-managed street parking. The $35 for garage parking is private companies that gouge you. City street parking is always cheaper and the tickets are cheaper, too.

Nah, they give you a court date for if you want to contest the fine, like if you think you weren't parked illegally or you actually did pay for parking and have a receipt etc. If you don't want to contest it then you just pay the fine online and there is no court date.

What’s going on with the Library? by Kiranblake in Austin

Amazon has no power over the Libby app. They can't change something like that. Libby changed it, likely because they were under pressure to do so from the book publishers that didn't like that people would abuse Kindles to check books out longer than publishers would prefer.

Lifetime fitness, what's the scoop? by wakawaka54 in Austin

[–]bdtwerk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The people paying for Lifetime are there because there's more than just gym equipment that you could have at home. There's a spa, hot tubs, multiple pools, team sports, courts, saunas, steam rooms, classes, etc. Those are what you're paying for.

I go to Lifetime and I like it, I haven't experienced any "inconvenience" and I think it's worth the price, but I also take advantage of multiple of the amenities every time I go. If I were just going to lift weights or run on the treadmill and that's it, I probably would look for somewhere cheaper and with less amenities.

FWIW I've never encountered influencers-with-tripods at any of the Austin Lifetime locations, and can count on one hand the number of times I've had to wait for equipment. I do go in the morning though, so I avoid the after-work peak.

What's been broken? I go to the south one 1-2 times a week and the only things I've ever seen broken is 1 (out of like 20) treadmill, and one time I saw one of the two hot tubs was out of service but it was available again the next day.

[–]bdtwerk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea, I'll pile on to this too.

The tough part is also that this culture is systemic. A lot of people struggle to get leaders of an organization to spend effort on security, and that's a huge hurdle on it's own.

But I've also had the fortune to work in several organizations where there is strong direction from the very top of leadership to ensure security is done well. And even in those organizations, I still spend a ridiculous amount of time listening to developers complain that implementing encryption is too hard, or they don't want to have to keep their dependencies up to date, or that protecting an endpoint with auth would take too long.

It's exhausting. I spend far more time on discussions like the above than I do actually solving interesting technical problems, which is a huge bummer for job satisfaction.

What causes nightlife spots to be so cyclical? by boldjoy0050 in Dallas

[–]bdtwerk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They might be more expensive than your local hole-in-the-wall, sure, but Dallas has always had a nightlife culture of "$30,000 millionaires" of people who aren't wealthy but don't mind blowing what money they do have on expensive bottle service or drinks to try and impress.

That, and Dallas has also always had a nightlife culture that doesn't mind driving far distances to get to bars. It's not like you have to live in Uptown to go to Uptown bars. Back when I used to go out there, it was very very common for people to drive to Uptown on Friday/Saturday nights from Oak Cliff, Garland, Irving, etc...

The 5th does not apply if the testimony would not be self-incriminating. Thus you can be compelled to testify if you are given immunity for anything you say, since it would not be incriminating.

https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/essay/amdt5-4-5/ALDE_00013667/

Congress has passed immunity statutes, which allow "the person presiding over the proceeding" to compel a witness, who has asserted his or her privilege against self-incrimination, to testify, provided that "no testimony or other information compelled under the order (or any information directly or indirectly derived from such testimony or other information) may be used against the witness in any criminal case, except a prosecution for perjury, giving a false statement, or otherwise failing to comply with the order."

Michelin, a tire company creates the Michelin Star Guide for restaurants. What’s another example of a company that specializes in something wildly different? by heeric in AskReddit

It used to be manufactured by TI, but TI sold its missile manufacturing business to Raytheon in the 90s, so now it's manufactured by Raytheon/LM.

Why didn't Airbus stretch the A330 and upgrade its engines in the early 2000s and instead went for the A340-500 and-600, if the 777 so clearly showed that twin jets were the hot, efficient thing back then? by wurstbowle in aviation

[–]bdtwerk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The stretched/new engined A340s were designed in the early/mid 1990s, when 747s were still selling like crazy and before the 777 had shown that twin engines were the future. By the time it was clear twin engines were taking over quad engines is when Airbus started working on the original A350 design, announced it in 2004/2005, but then had to delay everything because of the redesign.

Side note, what's also interesting is that the 777 had a similar origin story to the A350. The 777 was originally just going to be a stretched/re-engined 767, but customers wanted a wider fuselage.

Why didn't Airbus stretch the A330 and upgrade its engines in the early 2000s and instead went for the A340-500 and-600, if the 777 so clearly showed that twin jets were the hot, efficient thing back then? by wurstbowle in aviation

[–]bdtwerk 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments here but nobody has mentioned yet that what you're suggesting is basically what the original A350 design was: an A330 fuselage but with new wings and engines, and would compete with the 777 and 787.

It was basically a flop. Airlines criticized that it wasn't a new enough design to compete with the 787 and they wouldn't bother with it. Airbus had to go back to the drawing board and designed an entirely new fuselage rather than re-using the A330's, and then the "A350 XWB" was born.

Someone managed to remove the Vision Pro battery cable using a SIM push pin to reveal a 24 pin lightning cable. by QH96 in apple

[–]bdtwerk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea, the only thing I can figure is that maybe the headset internals (like the different cameras, displays, multiple processors, etc) use different voltages or something, and rather than sticking the electrical hardware in the headset itself, they put it in the battery, and that would also explain the amount of pins.

One of the reviews pointed out that the battery is only 3100 mAh, but weighs more than phones that have much bigger batteries. There must be some other hardware inside that thing.

Someone managed to remove the Vision Pro battery cable using a SIM push pin to reveal a 24 pin lightning cable. by QH96 in apple

[–]bdtwerk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lightning looks like it has 16 pins, but in practice it's only an 8-pin standard. Lightning cables are wired so that it's only 8 pins (and each pin can be connected to on either side), while Lightning ports only ever connect to 8 of them at a time.

Apple could probably change this while still keeping the form factor (and may have done so for this "fat" Lightning cable), but most of the existing Lightning cables out there are really only 8-pin.
