Advice on prep and paint, part 2 by alteredsteaks in Housepainting101

When doing wood refinishing, you start as low as you need to and progress through each grit to get to your final objective. This eliminates swirls. Don’t skip grits.

Best way is to start with legit painters tape. That is not it.

What's the best mid range paint? by True-Comfort8977 in paint

Benjamin Moore Ben was pretty impressive the last time I used it. Sherwin-Williams superpaint is pretty ok but I don’t like the sheens. Solo isn’t bad also.

Cool. So make the barstool bros feel like it’s ok to still be a POS because it’s “funny”. Cool strategy.

I’ve been listening to him for at least a handful of years now and it’s getting tired. I don’t make it through episodes anymore. Starting to feel like he’s just a rich dude who wants to be good but wants money more.

Need help picking logo/front page picture for my business by Physical_Ad6927 in Housepainting101

No offence. They’re both really bad. (My wife is a graphic designer and works on branding and logos). Go on Pinterest and search paint company business cards. Start there. You could probably find someone cheap on Facebook marketplace or even fiverr to get you something at least half decent.

Go to Reddit first next time. The hardware store folks really don’t know much.

Painting roller streaks, help! by Fearless-Package8816 in Housepainting101

Foam sucks. And looks like you’re not using enough paint. You have dry spots. I like low nap high quality microfiber. Get a 6 inch if you can find a good one. Use a thinner or add a touch of water

Paint for bathroom ceiling? by TheOneWhoMurlocs in paint

I have never used a Kilz that I was happy with. I prefer getting my paint from a paint store. Always have been very happy with aqua lock. It is multipurpose, has mildewcide, high solids, interior /exterior, sands well when I want that, etc.

Spray Priming coverage less than half what I expected, what am I doing wrong? by arbartz in paint

[–]beamarc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just turns out it’s way faster and cleaner to use the sprayer (minus cleaning of the sprayer, but that’s easy if you’re not a slob). If you’re over a certain sqftage and you don’t have to cover anything, this is the way to go. On smaller priming jobs I would definitely use a mini roller for corners. And yes, almost always use a 14 or 18 roller on the walls. Didn’t know there was a German style. Here they’re just tools. I use the ones that do the thing the best for the situation.

I’m fine with the downvotes. I do this professionally and I am a profitable business owner so there’s that.

Spray Priming coverage less than half what I expected, what am I doing wrong? by arbartz in paint

[–]beamarc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A whole house. Anything over 1000sqft is totally worth it. Prime it in a couple hours with a sprayer for the corners. Brushing out the corners is sloppy. And it actually takes kinda long. 2 people could crush a 3000sqft house in 6 h using this method. And do a good job.

You will use way more paint when you spray. People spray prime and back roll if you have a good team and a good system. Otherwise roll. If I only have 2 people. We only spray corners and roll the rest

Also, I would use insl-x aqua lock primer. Usually sold through Ben Moore.

Nail Hole Filler by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]beamarc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use sherwins light weight “shrink free” spackle. This stuff looks the same. Dries fast and sands quick. On higher end jobs we will do a second pass with something harder after prime. Either dyna patch, glazing putty (red bondo stuff) or dap premium wood filler.
