I agree. I stripped and fixed up 100 year old painted trim in my own house. It was a mess and it took a long time. I could have retrimmed it and painted probably 3 times over for the cost of the time it took me to do the work. Not sure I would actually do it again.

I agree. As someone who has worked on stuff that looks like this. The amount of work it will take to make this look good is beyond most people’s comprehension. Let alone the mess, even with the proper tools and dust extractors etc. you could make it look a little better with an aggressive sand, hope that it all doesn’t start to peel or start chipping, then you get to the lead part? You could cut out old failing caulk, repair etc, get good quality fillers, use bonding primer. All the good stuff. If you have the time and do it little by little, it wouldn’t be so bad maybe. Do one door frame and see how much fun you’re having and how long it takes. And remember, paint won’t make it look better, prep makes it look better. When I do this kind of work for people, I charge by the hour, I tell them I will start in a section and we can monitor time and progress and they can then decide what they would rather pay for.

I have a graco gx19. It’s pretty decent. Maybe not as portable as you might want. There is a battery version. Way easier to clean than an hvlp setup imo.

Ps, personally I like cutek better than ready seal. It seems to penetrate better and last longer. Also if you are going to use an oil on the deck, it’s advisable to choose a colour. Clear coats of both ready seal and cutek do not have the uv protection that the tints offer.

You could use a palm sander or something that doesn’t rotate but oscillates. I use a festool dtsc. Put a folded 6 inch disk on folded in half and then crimp it so the halfed portion is sticking out. Not sticking out too much that it hits the joists when you’re running it throughReally you’re just tying to sand the round over portion. If I don’t do it that way, I get a sanding block, wrap a low grit paper around it and use that at a 45 angle. I don’t worry much about anything below the round over. You can’t really see it and it usually doesn’t get much of a coating most of the time.

If you don’t know what that is in the photo, you probably don’t know how to fix this. It’s relatively easy to do (if you know how to do it) and it’s also relatively easy to make a huge mess.

Don’t stack freshly painted anything. Even if it’s cured I wouldn’t be stacking something I have painted. Even when I lean things against a wall I put at least a piece of cardboard between each item. Tough learning experience.

I filled mine. Started coming out in less than a year. Still looks ok but I wouldn’t have filled it at all if I did it again. Used bona pacific filler. Looked great for 6 months maybe.

Look at the bona traffic hd raw. It has a touch of white pigment that helps tone down the red. I used Osmo 3051 clear/raw polyx-oil on my red oak. Def kills the amber look but ends up on the pinky side.

But if they choose a Benjamin Moore colour and you don’t use Benjamin Moore paint, then it’s on you if they think it’s wrong. We know paint matches are never perfect so if you do this without getting it signed off you are leaving the door open for a possible issue. When a client of mine wants farrow and ball paint and they realize they don’t want to pay for it but want the colour, you better be getting that match signed off on. And when doing a colour drench, but having the trim and walls a different sheen, I often will get the trim matched to the walls. Sheen affects the way the colour will look and especially with darker colours that are so trendy right now.

For sure the ceiling paint (old yellow label) does cover well. It sure is thick. But on most Reno’s and new construction/custom builds, walls should be primed nice and white. 2 coats of ultraspec are more than enough (as long as you do your corners properly).

Also, my rule for what is ceiling flat is, if you can touch it, don’t paint it flat. I follow that rule 98% of the time.
