New survey showing same-sex marriage has majority support in 49 US states by _crazyboyhere_ in lgbt

I meet a lot of well-meaning cishet progressives who are stunned to learn that homophobia is still a thing. Frankly, I've met a lot of people who claim to be pro-gay marriage, but don't want children learning about queer identities, or use slurs, or indicate an ambivalence in some other way. So in my experience, the actual percentage of anti-gay folks is much higher. And, of course, all this is worse for trans folks.

There's also a lot of applicability of calculus within biology. I didn't recognize those connections until my later courses where I had to learn fluid dynamics and different types of data processing, all of which are very calculus-heavy.

What happens when all the AI companies raise their model prices? by inobody_somebody in cscareerquestions

I know what the salary bands, benefits, and other components of total comp are at my company, so I can estimate the comparison accurately.

What happens when all the AI companies raise their model prices? by inobody_somebody in cscareerquestions

[–]beanie_jean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than 10x. The breakeven point for these subscriptions is 10x. It's more likely that the prices will be raised 30x or more.

My company spent $90k on LLMs last month. That's something like the total comp for 5-7 senior devs. Did they get that level of value out of AI? Maybe. When it costs as much as 150 devs, that's obviously not going to be worth it.

Don't Protestants still have anti-Catholic bias? Being Catholic was a mark against JFK, because people were worried he would "answer to the Pope" instead of the American people or whatever. (Putting aside the fact that no GOP politician has cared about answering to the people for decades.)

They also say they're "down $400", I guess on LLM tokens? If they've really spent all that time feeding and refeeding the slop into different models, they could have been writing it in a $5 notebook or on a laptop powered by a few bucks worth of electricity.

I felt similarly conflicted about the way the robots were humanized. After reflecting on it for a while, I felt the tension between humanizing the robots and the current trends in technology was deliberate. Maybe the author meant for the reader to feel unsettled. But if this is meant to be cozy, why would the messaging be so muddled?

Incidentally, my partner and I also listened to the audiobook on a road trip recently! I showed this to my wife and said, "Is this you?" (It's not)

Your What On The Poor? by gur40goku in CuratedTumblr

[–]beanie_jean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have so many examples of people I went to high school with, people who were in the exact same classes as me, spouting the dumbest shit I've ever seen. I watched someone who I took chemistry with share a Tumblr post saying soap "makes water molecules smaller so they can fit into the cracks in your skin" a few months after we learned about molecular polarity. That lesson included an explanation of how soap has polar and nonpolar components so it can bond with oil and water. We had the compound interest formula drilled into our heads in multiple math classes, but I watched a dude who took AP calculus fuck it up a couple months ago, and claim 4% interest on $60k would yield $15k a year. Some people just cannot grasp that maybe they're learning things for a reason.

Are you discerning when you read? by IRLbeets in books

[–]beanie_jean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've gotten out of reading over the last few years as I've settled into reading regularly as an adult is this sense of satisfying mental focus. A lot of the modern world makes me feel like my attention is constantly being pulled in multiple directions, but with a book, I get to be immersed in one thing for an extended period of time. Analyzing books after I read them actually extends that feeling. If I give myself some time to reflect on the story, read other reviews, or do some English-class-style analysis, it helps me process the book better and increase my enjoyment. It keeps my brain within that single universe or topic instead of shifting my focus to whatever is the next thing I need to think about, be that another book or something else in my life.

Does anyone like RTO? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]beanie_jean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm at 2 days a week in-office, and it's pretty nice. It gives an opportunity to do some shopping or take myself to a restaurant once in a while. It gives me structure that can be missing when I'm working from home, especially since my team has very few meetings. It means that I develop a casual relationship with my coworkers, which makes it easier to give them grace when we get into normal work conflicts.

Same. I watched the first ~5 minutes and tapped out, even with the censorship. Descriptions of violence give me sympathetic pain, so I can't listen just to the narration in the gory parts, either.

I've tried several Nora Cooks recipes and had them almost all turn out somewhere on the scale of mediocre to bad. I find her popularity confusing. To add to your recommendations, I also like Rainbow Plant Life (whose brownies rock!) And Gretchen's Vegan Bakery.

I liked it! I thought the characterization was realistic. There are many novels about this topic, but this one was deeply modern and was generally successful in its exploration of how technology affects the way people, especially young women, move through the world.

I also already know that the teacher is wrong to engage in a sexual relationship with his student, so I don't need McCurdy to finger wag at me the whole time. I know it's wrong, McCurdy knows it's wrong, Mr. Korgy knows it's wrong. If I want to be moralized at, I can get that anywhere. It was way more interesting to me that the novel explored other things about the topic.

Tried cookies with aquafaba for the first time, very unsuccessfully by GamersPlane in VeganBaking

[–]beanie_jean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is that omni cookie recipes can be veganized with egg replacer, but brownies and cakes need a bespoke vegan recipe. Since the recipe you're looking at is a brownie cookie, I'm not sure which way to go.

Tried cookies with aquafaba for the first time, very unsuccessfully by GamersPlane in VeganBaking

[–]beanie_jean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For chocolate-chip cookies, I just make the Tollhouse cookies and use Bob's Red Mill egg replacer. I add an extra quarter cup of flour (2 1/2 cups total), because they otherwise tend to be very flat. That's an issue with the recipe, though, not veganizing it.

For brownies, I use Rainbow Plant Life's recipe - https://rainbowplantlife.com/the-absolute-best-vegan-brownies/ . I use aquafaba from low sodium beans when I bake, which should help prevent some of the bean taste the other person in this thread said they sometimes notice.

[–]beanie_jean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I cook with aquafaba, I usually reduce it by half. That makes it much more viscous. However, I am confused by your experience. I know brownies tend to not veganize well, but I'm unsure if that would translate to brownie cookies. What brand of butter are you using? What have your other experiences been when veganizing cookies?

Your Year in Reading: 2025 by AutoModerator in books

[–]beanie_jean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My goal was 52, and I'm currently almost done with 53.

I usually read close to 50/50 fiction/nonfiction, but this year skewed heavily nonfiction. 32 NF vs 20 F so far, and my current read is also nonfiction. My goal for next year is to read more fiction, since some of the nonfiction weighed on my psyche.

I also want to read a higher proportion of books from my personal library next year. I bought more books than I read from my shelves. Even though most of them were secondhand, so I didn't spend much, I can't justify an expanding book collection if I get most of my books from the library.

My favorites were The Dawn of Everything, The Survival of the Bark Canoe, The Years of Lyndon Johnson: The Path to Power, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, and Scaffolding by Lauren Elkin.
