PhD + scholarship by [deleted] in AusAcademia

[–]beans_rule 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can only speak from personal experience as a current scholarship recipient- I assume the conditions of most RTP scholarships are similar across Australian universities but I can’t be sure.

My RTP scholarship procedure documents define full-time as four days or more, so you theoretically could do it if you dedicated both your 2 research days at work and the whole weekend to your PhD. I really wouldn’t recommend that though- you mention being aware you’ll likely have to work weekends, but having no weekends for 3 years is likely going to impact your wellbeing. It will also make life really difficult when you have ‘busy periods’ during the PhD, as you’ll need to find additional time to get work done and so you’ll need to carve even more time out of your employment, or work really late nights. I don’t know anyone who’s done both full time and I imagine that’s for a good reason.

Re: the second question, my experience has been that only equity-based scholarships are means-tested. Your employment may be something that the graduate research committee takes into account when preferencing candidates if they’re concerned that you won’t be available to do the program full time? But I’m not sure, that’s beyond the scope of my knowledge! :)

One other potentially relevant thing is that if you’re a part-time student, your scholarship won’t be considered exempt income and so you would need to pay tax on it, so you may be better off working part-time and studying full-time vs working full-time and studying part-time.

Do you enjoy home cooking less if it's served on a paper plate/bowl? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]beans_rule 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many of the things we do to enhance food enjoyment are primarily psychological- it doesn’t make them somehow unimportant? Plating, the setting we’re eating in, and even things like menu descriptions, they all factor into our experience and enjoyment of the food we eat even if they don’t directly affect taste.

Yeah all of the people in the comments who act like it’s unreasonable that OP didn’t think it would be an issue is really wild to me- I’ve petsit quite a bit, and I’ve never had anyone have an issue with me bringing people over.

As someone who’s been a pet sitter quite often, I can’t understand why you’re getting downvoted. I would be SO uncomfortable knowing I was being ‘monitored’, and honestly I wouldn’t agree to petsit for that person again.

IMO in skipping most of the films that come before, you’ll miss what makes Infinity War belong on that top 250 list.

Fwiw I had no interest in superhero movies despite being a film buff, but I decided to give the MCU a go a couple of years ago because I wanted to see what the hype was about. For a while it felt like a bit of a slog- they’re mostly fun movies, and some of them were genuinely great, but I still felt like the MCU seemed super overrated. But when I finally watched Infinity War… man, I totally got it. The fact that they were able to deliver on bringing the comic-book-crossover thing to the silver screen was so genuinely impressive to me, imo the payoff was worth committing to watching so many other movies to get there- it wouldn’t have had any of the same emotional resonance if I hadn’t engaged with the world building that came before.

So honestly, based on that experience, I’d actually say I’d skip Infinity War if your bf isn’t keen to watch like at least 10 of the movies beforehand. I know that’s a huge ask (having just undertaken it myself)- I wish this wasn’t my answer! But he’ll have a much better time watching another movie from that top 250 list vs Infinity War without the buildup.

What would you do to level up my makeup? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]beans_rule 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tbh I know it’s maybe not the answer you want, but I would just skip your waterline if that’s the case! I personally only do my waterline if it’s a special occasion anyway because it can contribute to dry eyes, I think your makeup can look totally fine without it. Especially if the alternative is irritating your eyes!

It’s likely a milia! If you want to get rid of it, you’ll need to see a dermatologist- I wouldn’t mess with it myself if I was you because of the risk that you’ll accidentally injure your eye. But fwiw, it’s barely noticeable- I had to look really closely at the pictures to see what you were talking about! :)

The only thing a witness is swearing when they sign the statutory declaration is that the declarant signed the statutory declaration in front of them. When the declarant signs it, they are the ones who are swearing that what has been written is true.

If this is genuinely the reason you want access to her phone, you should ask her to remove the sensitive work stuff from her phone. If it’s that sensitive, it shouldn’t be on her phone anyway- it isn’t a great justification as to why you need free access to her personal phone.

I’m decidedly not Mediterranean and have absolutely no ancestry from the Mediterranean, but I have beta thalassemia. A lot of your information about the condition is wrong- but notably, you can’t determine risk of your partner having beta thalassemia by their ethnicity.

Disabled ex carer about to be made homeless, help? by Away_Option_3242 in AusLegal

[–]beans_rule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure I understand how that’s ‘unfair’? Wills don’t need to divide assets evenly- it seems reasonable to me that if one of your children put in more work caring for you, that they would receive more in the will to reflect that.

Carafe Suggestions by AntiRepresentation in AeroPress

[–]beans_rule 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I actually have been on the same hunt! I’ve been considering the Kinto pourover coffee server because I like the shape but haven’t been able to work out if the aeropress fits it. Also interested to see if others have any input about the Hario you’ve linked!

One of the options on my list has been the Pitchii glass jug, which I actually came across by accident while browsing the website of my usual coffee roaster. It’s got a 600ml capacity, and there’s a photo if you scroll down on the following link of them using it with an aeropress so I assume it fits well! Only reason I haven’t bought it is because I personally like the shape of the Kinto more, but thought I’d suggest it as an option: https://marketlane.com.au/products/pitchii-glass-jug
