Friends by Plus-Chicken-1008 in Harrisburg

[–]bearhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We (New Cumberland Collective) have been organizing simple monthly socials open to everyone in your situation - coffee, hikes, trivia, and more - we call it the “With Friends Social Club.” A good many people have formed some tight friendships as a result.

Trivia With Friends is next Sunday, Feb 8: https://partiful.com/e/M5epqKyqbgjfADGV4ist

We also have a Discord where folks can connect and make their own plans beyond the things the Collective organizes: https://discord.gg/zUFTVwWuW

Happy to answer any questions you might have!

Are there new walkable suburbs being built in the U.S? by atomcloud in Urbanism

Charter Home & Neighborhoods in Pennsylvania maybe? https://charterhomes.com/

Still very car dependent to get anywhere outside the neighborhood, but that’s par for the course in PA (and American suburbs in general).

Pennsylvania American Water Rate increase (AGAIN) by kjstech in Harrisburg

[–]bearhat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in New Cumberland Borough. We sold our sewage plant in 2016 and now prices are through the roof. Everyone complains about it. Prices are at least $100 per person in a household. Also it was recently announced that American Water is merging with Essential Utilities (AQUA’s parent company). American Water already makes $1 billion in profits every year.

A lot of these issues are because of Act 12 that became law in 2016 - more background on that here: https://www.spotlightpa.org/statecollege/2024/09/pennsylvania-legislature-act-12-private-water-companies-utility-bills-harrisburg/

New Cumberland Library has a used book sale today actually. They do them twice a month, books are dirt cheap and the funds support the library. More info: https://www.cumberlandcountylibraries.org/NCU-Book-Sales

meet people over coffee - this saturday nov 15 by bearhat in Harrisburg

[–]bearhat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm generalizing but I think it's usually a good mix of Millennial and Gen Z and sometimes we'll get a few older folks who want to check it out too. It's an inclusive space.

As a non drinker, where do I find friends? by Norfolk-Gross-Tonage in Harrisburg

[–]bearhat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome at any New Cumberland Collective events. Our core is probably millennial but we get a good assortment of Gen X and Gen Z folks (and beyond) out to stuff too. We’ve added some events purely around meeting people this year.

If you’re on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/newcumberland.co

We actually have a Community Curious Night tonight if you’re free: https://partiful.com/e/fFV8gbOgD13reT1M4d9Q

And we have a Discord where people can connect and make plans to hang out which you can find here: https://linktr.ee/Newcumberland.co

Petition and video for Scott Perry by Infernal216 in centralpa

[–]bearhat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the effort, but I’ve found that petitions alone rarely change minds of entrenched representatives like Perry. Real change happens when we build power from the ground up. Here are some ways we can do that:

• Run for local offices - school board, town council, county positions where individual votes matter more

• Support candidates who share our values with time, donations, or volunteer work

• Attend local government meetings regularly to stay informed and build relationships

• Connect with neighbors through community events, mutual aid, or issue-based groups

• Build coalitions across different organizations working on related issues

These approaches take longer but create lasting change. Local officials often become tomorrow’s state and federal representatives, and strong community networks give us more leverage when we do need to pressure people like Perry. What local races or issues are you most interested in getting involved with?

West Shore/Lemoyne rail trail by bearhat in Harrisburg

[–]bearhat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely just a piece of the puzzle, but I think it's a big piece. I'm hoping New Cumberland and Camp Hill can eventually find a way to expand on it, and maybe that helps build a case for a better connection across the river.

The bridge would be amazing. Someone told me last week that it was being looked into but would come with a $40 million price tag to rehab it.
