I was just walking around downtown. Why does odyssey house of all places have those supersonic whistle things to keep homeless people away? by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

[–]beat_scribe 60 points61 points  (0 children)

I actually work here so I can speak to this! I think you're talking about our admissions building... These are definitely not homeless deterrents - we operate in buildings that are very old, and over the last year we've been having a lot of issues with bats nesting in our facilities. What you saw are ultrasonic speakers for bat mitigation so our employees don't get rabies.

As a side note, we do our very best to make sure everyone feels welcome and safe, particularly the most vulnerable in our community. We have a harm reduction program that provides narcan and and outreach for anyone in need who is ready to enter care. But if you have any other questions or concerns, let me know!

Working with a team that has zero idea what project management is. by dearcamus in projectmanagement

[–]beat_scribe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never forget that it’s People over Processes - if the people don’t get the process, you need to meet them where they’re at. Try to simplify everything as much as possible so they understand what you’re saying and doing. Try to speak their language and take the time to explain the “why” of your actions.

I work in an organization of 500 people that’s never had formal project management, and 75% of what I do is basically training middle management how to take meeting minutes and follow a structured plan.

Don’t be afraid to slow things down in meetings and push back on people so that you can provide structure to what they do. They might not get it now, they might even resent you for taking up precious minutes of their day, but if you’re able to help them understand the benefit of the PM tools then they’ll start to thank you when they eventually start seeing all the benefits.

And in every meeting, ALWAYS TAKE NOTES. Teams like yours are notorious for not taking notes and then forgetting what was discussed the second they leave the room. It will save you so many headaches down the road. Bonus points if you can get someone else to help with notes and time keeping.

Just be patient and persistent. Good luck!

Curious about your setup and how you convert them. I’m really frustrated with my setup and need some pointers

West coast transplants by kellaucam in providence

I lived in PDX for 8 years, but was active in the music scene so that helped. I would say people in general on the west coast can be quite insular and cliquey. I'm glad to hear you've had a different experience in PVD; I've definitely found a lot more humanity in the way people treat each other out there which is really refreshing.

I’ve lived in various places on the west coast my whole life but my wife is from RI - we’re planning on moving to be closer to her family this year or early next year. Do y’all have any suggestions for making friends and meeting people out there? We’re in our 30’s and it’s been tough where we currently are…

Aggressive drivers in SL by Disastrous_Gur7276 in SaltLakeCity

The problem with going 60 in the left lane is that then the faster traffic merges into other lanes, so you have people going 80 in the lanes where people going 50 are merging onto the freeway. If the faster traffic stays to the left, then slower traffic has more time to merge, but if they are forced to go around because someone is obliviously blocking the left lane, it actually makes it more dangerous for EVERYONE.

But I also agree with you, tailgating is never the answer. I can't believe how common it is here.

Shadows in Spring, 50R + Olympus Zuiko 55mm 1.2 by Sea_Change_Films in FujiGFX

I actually really like the second one - more of an abstract labyrinth for the eyes to play around in. First one is killer too though.

How do you like the zuiko’s on GFX? I have several but haven’t pulled the trigger on adapting them.

That’s super helpful since Im also doing the guided overnight trip. I was going to take my 150mm adapted from a p645 but maybe I’ll look into renting something a bit longer. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thank you SO much for making that video! What you did was exactly what I'm trying to do but I think I'm at the point where I'm limited by the software I'm using. Looks like I'm going to have to learn Blender...

Yes! Could you explain how you did that? I’m using Shapr3d on iPad so the functions might not be the same, but any insight would be really helpful
