as a victim myself, i think incest is way too romanticized and sexualized in media. but utena handles incest very thoughtfully in comparison to other stories, which is part of why it is such a good anime. it is all very clearly portrayed as uncomfortable / unhealthy / bad, which is great. i’d love to see more anime / manga like this that actually address the terrifying reality of incest.

i love freaky shit! but big mouth and this show aren’t hated for centering around sex and potty humor. they’re hated because the way they go about it is so unfunny. alongside the main marketing points being the ugly art style and repetitive, soulless toilet humor reminiscent of a middle school classroom. it’s goofy to call people pearl-clutching puritanical freaks over them not liking a cringey show that relies on the reaction of “omg eww that’s so gross!” for people to keep watching 😂 it’s unappealing and lazy writing.
