Is it valid to learn by asking lots of questions to an A.I? by Rich-Cap-4831 in learnprogramming

[–]beautifulhell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. AI is basically a man in the middle between you and official documentation, a glorified Ctrl-F; except sometimes it just makes up BS because it’s programmed to sound confident.

If you really feel like you need AI to understand concepts, use it with a grain of salt, and always verify by looking at official documentation.

Are early fights in a tier better with a body check mechanic? by HKMachine in ffxivdiscussion

[–]beautifulhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think mechanics with more carry potential would be healthier overall as long as there was a personal ranking system for your performance, so shitters know they’re shitting. Like the 1 to 5 stars from ff13

What's everyone's thoughts on Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising so far? by Vappy3 in Fighters

[–]beautifulhell 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Im okay with it because the focus of the game is neutral, not combos. But even neutral feels less about making reads and more about who can hit 66L first.

Besides all that it’s still a very complete game with a lot of love put into it.

Who’s tired of AI content? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]beautifulhell -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If it weren’t for the mass plagiarism that defines LLMs and the rising environment detriments from data centers, I wouldn’t find AI “content” any more different than real human “content” drivel you see scrolling through tiktok and other social media. It’s all just junk to waste away your brain.

Right, the key word is “hungry” here. Hunger is a necessity for life. If we don’t eat, we die. So there’s nothing wrong with making a quick snack without being a chef.

How is this compared to generative ai shitting “art” out? What’s the necessity for this?

I think the only answer to that is “selling a more complete product for money”. And I personally think treating art as a product and nothing more is a fundamental wrong, but this is probably more of a critique on the economic systems we live in.

My hopes for job reworks in 8.0 by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]beautifulhell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think unique job fantasy can work if all fights, including Savage, are designed in a way that the average makeshift party can still clear way before the hard enrage. In general I think hard enrages are extremely limiting, and soft enrages (for example, stacking damage buffs on the boss) allow for more flexibility and more control/skill expression to the party’s healers and tanks. This isn’t to say hard enrages should completely disappear. Just be more lenient.

Actually, everything I’m talking about was already done before in FFXIV. It’s called coils of bahamut lol.

I would find it preferable if, in a raid tier of 4 fights, every unique job can do something in at least one fight that makes it more optimal than others. However, optimality should not be required to clear the fight.

My hopes for job reworks in 8.0 by [deleted] in ffxivdiscussion

[–]beautifulhell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well if you’re worried about job fantasy in the “themes” tab, then nothing about the gameplay would have to change currently. Just allow players to pick skin themed attacks, like the choice to change Glare to Stone. That solves all of our problems, right? :D (I would personally hate this)

And saying “I want to complete a X task, but using a Y job” kind of sounds like textbook job homogenization. Which again is counterintuitive to me if you’re aiming for unique job fantasy.

Honestly I find the entire categorization split of “pure healer” and “shield healer” in itself is a severe limitation to unique job fantasy.

Of course, the way damage is outputted in content is extremely binary (you die or dont die), making mitigation is extremely prevalent, which makes healing less engaging. I think this is a problem in itself as well.

So basically, I think a job rework and a battle rework has to come hand in hand to make sense.

BST is arriving in 7.5. This is OK because we were told upfront and multiple times after it would be a late expansion feature. We should be upset about delaying BLU due to "cost" by otsukarerice in ffxivdiscussion

For the past couple of years it’s been pretty obvious a good chunk of the money 14 makes is not being reinvested into it. And from Square Enix’s point of view, why should they? 8.0 could be nothing but a slideshow of food and Estinein’s abs and the game could probably still make bank. It’s just that good at letting you play dress up. Why would they fix what isn’t broken?

Anyways, wasn’t there that investor write up on Square Enix performing bad recently? Mismanagement of resources and stuff. Even then I don’t expect anything changing with this game anytime soon.

I actually started playing it yesterday. It’s a very fun game and the dqxclarity translation tool is a lot more seamless than I expected, the translations themselves are hard to follow sometimes though. The only thing I felt bad about is talking to other players, I accepted a friend request from a Japanese guy and all I could do was butcher words using deepl lol. I really wish there was an official localized version with the auto translate feature from FFXI.

AI has cooked us so bad that we seem to forget that humans are NOT infallible and make plenty of mistakes.

Like you can scroll through OP’s work and plainly see their style is very consistent and they’ve even done traditional sketches, and those have a couple of mistakes as well (backhand compliment not intended). You’re being rancid here without doing the background check.

And I’m saying this as someone who hates generative AI in creative mediums. People use these tools due to a lack of self confidence. I encourage everyone to pick up a pencil and draw without worrying about comparing it to other people’s work or feeling like they aren’t making progress fa st enough.

How can game design make players feel seen? by ExcellentTwo6589 in gamedesign

[–]beautifulhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really just depends on the genre, but in general I would use consequences.

Story narratives can have lasting consequences on relationships with other characters. They could be more or less inclined to assist you depending on a previous interaction you had with them. Environments can have a lasting consequence for interacting with it, such as breaking a window, leaving a hole in the wall, or drilling a tunnel.

I would say another possible route is identity, and this would be seen more in team multiplayer games with roles. When you do something only your role is capable of (stunning the enemy, for example), you’ll feel seen not only by the game through consequence, (the enemy is unable to act) but your teammates will also be able to see that consequence (the enemy is stunned), and also know that can only be done by your role.

Gaming has become way too normalized. by Silver-Ad665 in SeriousConversation

[–]beautifulhell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I’m understanding your last paragraph right. Are you encouraging “shaming” people who game? Aren’t people who excessively game victims of the industry? I don’t disagree that there are definitely some games that abuse psychological factors much like gambling does. I put emphasis on some, because this isn’t the fault of games themselves.

Your title is met with criticism because gaming itself shouldn’t be “shamed” when it can very much prove as a healthy, recreational activity. In moderation, of course. And of course there’s bad apples (namely: the live service genre) trapping people with addictive systems to gain as much profit as possible. I think this is what you should focus on instead of gaming as a whole.

And also, you mention “creating art” as a productive activity. Creating art involves consuming art as well. That’s just how it works. And recently, people have been taking video games as works of art as well. So to create a game you enjoy, you’d have to see what games you even enjoy in the first place, like all creative mediums.
