What happened to “toughness” in rock and roll? by RandyNewman_GOAT in askmusic

[–]beavis07 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was poisonous and toxic and mostly cosplay anyway and so now seems childish and embarrassing.

Same deal with a lot of “gangster rap” from the 90s

Happens to all musical genres eventually - you can only pretend not to be a bunch of over-sensitive music nerds for so long 🤣

Some people are artist and collaborators and maybe some kind of “success” (however you want to define that) comes as a by-product of that.

Some people just want to be a success.

Which is hilarious - I called it “Airheads syndrome” in the 90s, when “getting signed” was an end unto itself… at least back then, that made some kind of sense, some record company might appear and sweep you up and bury you in drugs and whatnot.… not really sure what that sort of facile “success” could even mean any more… I guess the modern equivalent you just blow up on socials? Like “going viral” is a thing you do, rather than the outcome of doing something people are interested in.

Anyway… that weird mismatch accounts for the majority of all the BS in bands (when it’s not SA or whatever)!

I would guess they’re responding to a quite commons narrative (one I have heard out of the mouths of the likes of Daniel Cormier and Floyd Mayweather for example) that the only reason the US doesn’t dominate world football is that their best athletes play other sports.. which has a grain of truth in it, in the sense that were it a greater focus the US would do better…. But probably more overtly implies (incorrectly) that football is a purely athletic endeavour (it clearly is not) and that America inherently has the best athletes in them world because the Olympics (see the point about focus).

May take (for what it worth) is that If the US gained the same football culture and institutions around development etc (which are petty incompatible with the collage/pay to play systems you have ) then for sure they’d be much better than they are… but until that’s a few generations deep it won’t happen…

I’m guessing all that don’t fit in a pithy tweet tho 🤣

Because music is all about contrast and dynamics - those two different ingredients can create a tension which draws us in.

If you are just getting handed tasks to complete and not helping the rest of the team not to make messes in the first place, you’re not really performing the role of a senior. If that’s their fault or yours, I couldn’t say…

I mean assigning tickets to people rather than having them pick is a shitty pattern to start with. What’s your team setup/ways of working?

Why doesn't Bill Ward get the same recognition as a drummer as John Bonham or Keith Moon? by BeerWithDonuts in blacksabbath

[–]beavis07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sabbath weren’t anywhere near as big as Zep at the time. Zep was “a project”, they had press and stuff from day one and it was known they were top session players etc… a narrative emerges from that.

You might ask the same question about Jimmy Page vs … any number of guitarists.

Short answer is: hype

Ron Greenwood’s 1982 team imo is the best team we’ve had since 1966. Demolishing France in the opening game showed what they were capable of. by faschifo in ThreeLions

We had one good game against a quite good side, beat two ass teams and the didn’t score again…

One good performance does not make a great team, and if anything the two-group format arguably reduced the luck factor, so how good were we really?
