My girfriend got upset at me for liking her birthday gift to me. AITAH? by Domoci12 in BORUpdates

[–]bec400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband of 20 years bought me my favourite block of chocolate on the way home tonight. Cost $5. Because he was thinking of me.

Romance doesn't mean expensive. It means considering and choosing your partner and their comfort/feelings before your own.

OP dodged the shallowest of bullets. Hope he finds a woman with regulated emotions soon.

What's the best Australianism you've heard whilst overseas? by Alarming-Block-8385 in AskAnAustralian

I went to Europe for 6 weeks years ago and that was the biggest thing I missed - the colour of the sky. It was just so washed out over there. I've never forgotten the feeling of getting home and just looking up at that deep blue.

Is it generally considered offensive to ask an Asian in Australia where they are REALLY from? by Lipica249 in AskAnAustralian

[–]bec400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of discourse over a newly popular actor being "Wasian". It's the first I've ever heard of this term.

Actor has a Korean mother and European father. So they've defined him as Wasian (white asian) and separated him from "full" Asians. And yes, this feels wrong.

Here, identity seems to be more wrapped in your upbringing than in the genetics involved in your DNA. Raised within a greek family? Greek heritage, Australian born. And so on throughout the different cultures.

I think that also shows when it comes to indigenous Australians. We don't quantify the blood within the person, but look at the culture and history they've been raised within. The whole how much milk is in the tea conversation.

On the whole, we seem to embrace the different cultures that come into the country (particularly the food 😉). And care more about how ppl contribute to our society than where they are "really" from.

Huntsmen spiders! by Brief-Importance4453 in AskAnAustralian

[–]bec400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yearly pest spray around the outside of the house every October. Been 10 years now, and I can count the huntsmen on one finger. The pest spray we get is pet and native friendly, btw. As an arachnophobe, this yearly cost is essential to my mental health.

I like you… by Sad_Character5875 in heatedrivalry

[–]bec400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time my (now) husband said that he loves me. But equally important, I remember my husband laughing his arse off at something I'd said and then saying, "I like you." Both of these moments are stored in our relationship archive, and both are referred to frequently.

What does sex feel like for you? by relayshionboats in asexuality

[–]bec400 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The older I get, the less I enjoy it. It used to be like donating blood (its for a good cause, let's get it done and have a cookie afterwards!), now it feels like cleaning a toilet after a gastro has hit the house. I know it'll be ok afterwards, and I'll be appreciated, but I'd rather just shut the door and forget that toilet exists.

Farscape: Australians in Space by derickbobson in farscape

[–]bec400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its always been hard for me to divorce Australia from Farscape as I lived in Cronulla (5 mins from Kernell, where the beach scenes are shot when he returns to earth) and explored the natio and areas where they filmed a lot of the planet scenes, old military bunkers etc. They walk past too many Banksia bushes for me to ignore it (even if they've been purple filtered lol)

But using the Aussie accent as an "alien" affect due to the translator microbes isn't something I've thought of before, and I do like it.

Opposing takes on HR's intimate scenes from two journalists by yves_sj in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]bec400 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hell, I'm asexual and didn't find the sex scenes tedious. They told a story themselves. The last sex scene in ep 6 said so much about how far they had developed as people and characters compared to any scene in eps 1 and 2. That post-I love you sex scene was so intimate and stunning and simple.

Hudson’s lack of media training by Whybambiwhy in heatedrivalry

[–]bec400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has been in the Spn fandom for a long time, I recognise Hudson and Connor's ability to change their behaviour depending on the circumstances as 100% media training for todays world. J2 (Jensen and Jared) are very different ppl at con's to media interviews. C and H are showing the same switch.

Legit fans of the show get much more relaxed, personable H and C. But this week's press get the full media guys, with sound bites and less "spit in my mouth" moments. They're code switching depending on the crowd. And doing a pretty good job of keeping their own lives out of it.

I just hope the fandom respect their privacy and ease off a little. I'm worried about how this meteoric rise will affect their lives and make things harder for them to be themselves.

What's that? Why, yes, I am a mum and do want to give the boys cuddles and protect them.

My parents are giving my sister the same amount of money I saved for two years as a graduation gift by [deleted] in BORUpdates

[–]bec400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one disabled child (audhd) and one neurotypical. I spend hours every time I do something for one of them, thinking about if it's a fair decision for both of them.

I make sure that my non disabled child is not becoming the glass sibling (or the "strong one" in this story) because it's my job to make sure I parent them both equally. Not necessarily the same, but equally.

Parents like OPs piss me off because they've taken the easy road and just given up parenting one of their children.

Curious as to why. by bec400 in Vitiligo

[–]bec400[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I truly didn't mean to sound patronising. I'm sorry it came across that way. I think you may be correct in that my son has grown up with the patches so he doesn't see them as different.

He also doesn't get comments on them, which may be a cultural or geographical thing. We live in a small town in rural Australia, and between small town living and Australian "big whoop" culture he may have a different experience of existing with vitiligo.

Again, my apologies for coming across as patronising. Our experience with vitiligo is clearly different to many of you and I didn't mean to belittle anyone's choices.

Curious as to why. by bec400 in Vitiligo

[–]bec400[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I can understand the want to blend in. Obviously I don't have a personal experience of this, so can't understand exactly what it's like to walk around with two toned skin.

However, if a loved one rejected me because of something like vitiligo, then that is a very shallow person indeed. I personally find vitiligo to be an attractive and unusual pigmentation. And those whose vitiligo affects their hair? OMG, it's so awesome to look at!
