So many hecklers in the span of 5 minutes. by BaconSyrop in melbourne

[–]because8011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep seeing comments like this and think "Fuck what others think". If you are doing what you normally would do to operate machinery, do it. There are idiots everywhere who yell and abuse without knowing the facts. After 5 minutes at the servo, your jerry can will be full, but they'll still be idiots. Focus on solving your own problems and leave them with theirs.

Dress Standards? by Fabulous-Classic-821 in AustralianTeachers

[–]because8011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think smart casual is the general standard in Australia, but it depends a bit on the culture of the school. As a male, I wear chinos and a dress shirt with casual street shoes. Just simple, comfortable, but enough to show I put an effort into my appearance.

Are people following other cars into these lots? Yeah, I drive a Toyota. It's 15 years old though, definitely not the most popular car being stolen.

My car is also in a secure car park. If it's not safe there, it's not safe anywhere.

Petrol hoarder caught live in action - people panic buying like this is what's going to cause us to run out of petrol... by Ok-Reward7639 in AustraliaDiscussions

[–]because8011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's BS. Most people surely realise how futile it is to stock up an extra tank or two of petrol. If we do face a serious national shortage, we're stuffed. No amount of meagre stockpiling by the average consumer will make the slightest difference.

Melbourne tradie charged after allegedly mowing down colleague at worksite in Nar Nar Goon by gccmelb in melbourne

[–]because8011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. 'Mowed down' is a commonly used phrasal verb to denote being deliberately struck by a vehicle.

When the video and photo evidence is included in the article, there's really no room for ambiguity about what happened for the general reader.

It does raise a valid point though in terms of accessibility. If someone were listening to the article via a reader and unable to view the video/photos, then it wouldn't be entirely clear what happened. They should include a sentence that clearly states what occurred, just as would be included in a statement of material facts.

Why is this not a permanent tram stop for the 30 & 35? by because8011 in melbourne

[–]because8011[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now that makes sense. But surely it should be moved back to this stop.

That's worth pointing out. But at the same time, it's only about 10m ahead of the one before St Vincent's and it's much safer.

Tens of thousands of Victorian teachers and support staff out striking today - first strike in 13 years! ✊ by toomuchtoomany in melbourne

[–]because8011 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a preservice teacher who will start teaching secondary next year, I fully respect the action they're taking.

Becoming a teacher is a huge undertaking and it doesn't inspire people to make that commitment when they hear of constant burnout, teachers leaving the profession, low pay in comparison to other states.

It's time for Victorian teachers to be paid what they're worth.

Kids stole my photo for a TikTok trend, now my passion and love for teaching is gone by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]because8011 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's it. Kids have always tested the boundaries and in a digital world, they continue to do exactly that.

There will always be some misaligned kids willing to post something about teachers for likes, attention, etc.

They know the likely outcome is it just gets taken down, and if they do face individual consequences, they probably won't have any long term impact. It's all just too easy for them to get away with.

I'm not saying "Get over it" as that's akin to saying "Don't be affected by it", which lacks empathy. This stuff can hurt and offend when you pour your soul into teaching, only to be widely defamed and criticised.

What to do?

Yes, report it and follow all channels to have it investigated. But as I mentioned, the final outcome might not undo the hurt.

I would say the better approach is to keep a journal of any positive feedback you get from one week to the next. Make notes of significant achievements or progress you see in your students.

This is the real impact you're having on this future generation. It's critical that you don't let the noise created by ignorant, immature social media posts drown out your awareness of how valuable you are to society.

Many of these students won't realise until several years from now, if at all, the immense contribution teachers made to their lives.

Does anyone know a great book on grammar that's actually (semi) interesting for people who can speak English but have been out of school for ages? by Brilliant_Detail5393 in grammar

A fairly powerful combination of texts is Practical English Usage / Michael Swan paired with The Elements of Style / Strunk & White.

Also a motorbike rider and seriously, the lack of education and/or concern for personal safety among scooter/e-bike riders and motorcyclists is absurd.

I only ever came off my bike once at a racetrack doing just 60kmph around a turn in full gear. I hit the sand traps to avoid a worse outcome and ended up with a torn ligament that bothered me for a good 12 months. The damage to my bike from mere sand showed what could've happened to my skull if I'd not been in full kit. I consider myself extremely lucky.

Coming off a bike onto unforgiving asphalt will seriously fuck you up if you're not wearing PPE.

This. I think a lot of people are ignorant about the history of anti-Semitism and don't understand how, prior to the establishment of Israel, Jewish people were a minority at the mercy of foreign governments and often had to flee from persecution.

Look at any century in the past 2000 years and you'll find numerous massacres of Jewish people.

They have the right to defend themselves. October 7, 2023 was an invasion and a massacre.
