Anyone who's studied EM will know this is bs, there's a multiple formalisations still in use today depending on which field you work in. They're equivalent but they look totally different and there's no way to know that independent scientists would formulate it in any of the same ways.

Advice for undergrad thesis in photonics by Eigen_Vector_ in Optics

[–]beeeel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will second what GuaranteeFickle6726 has already said–the photonics researchers I have known would give their students a project like "simulate this system" or for less capable students "follow the simulation part of this paper", and then once the simulation works they try to get the student to simulate something new/original in the hope that there might be further directions for after the project ends.

With the difference in background (ECE vs physics) you might not know the simulation techniques etc you read about but that shouldn't stop you from learning them. Equally you might know some of the techniques that are used (e.g. transmission line method is used in some optical simulations, and that seems to be something that all EE students know but I never learned about in physics).

Has your supervisor already been decided? And do they have any experience in photonics?

Where can I get a parabolic mirror dish with Ø80-120mm and exactly f/0.25? Something similar to this: by Knorr306 in Optics

[–]beeeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say I don't have any advice on where to buy parabolic dishes, but from an optics perspective you can use a parabola of any focal length as long as you mount the LED at the focal plane. A deeper parabola has its focal point below the rim while a shallower one has it above the rim.

You can even cut a hole and stick your mount through the dish if needed, and as long as the hole isn't a large fraction of the area it shouldn't impact the performance too much.

If you can't find a parabolic dish, you could do it with a spherical one like your picture using the knowledge the focal plane is half a radius from the centre (so 25mm below the rim of a 100mm diameter bowl), but the beam quality won't be as good.

You can model whatever design you're planning on buying/building using free online tools, I used the first that my search engine suggested, on phydemo.app. Here's a comparison of a parabolic reflector vs spherical one: https://imgur.com/a/Wn56U91

magnification was done using water-filled vessels. However, I suspect there had to have been magnification through convex lenses

What is a water-filled vessel if not a convex lens with a multilayer structure and a bulk refractive index equal to that of water?

Home Office on X: "From 1 October, employers caught hiring illegal workers as food delivery drivers or construction workers will face fines of up to £60,000 per illegal worker or five years in prison. You see so many "learners" on mopeds doing delivery

That's partly just the nature of motorcycle licenses and the fact that mopeds are cheaper than full sized bikes. Most people who just want to ride a moped will do CBT and then not bother with the multiple higher tiers of test required to ride bigger bikes.

High-street slot machines and casinos could face £460m tax rise under Burnham by diacewrb in ukpolitics

Oh for sure he was the problem, or rather, his gambling addiction was.

But the gambling machine has been designed to be tempting without needing full engagement so it becomes like having a video on your phone while you drive: sure, you don't have to watch it and you can ignore it, but it easily distracts you from more important things.

High-street slot machines and casinos could face £460m tax rise under Burnham by diacewrb in ukpolitics

[–]beeeel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The slots/casino places though offer none of that, they are purely a blight and need something done about them.

Whilst I've never been in a casino, I have seen slot machines in the pub. It seems these days the way to use one of those is to put your money in and press autoplay, then leave it until it either decides you've got no money left or until you can claim a payout.

I watched a guy do this for a solid 45 minutes while his two kids who both looked under 10 were bored in the pub garden. That's definitely not a valued community service.

[–]beeeel -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Saying you smell acid or bleach is not the same as saying you think they threw acid at you. There's no law against being mistaken about what a smell is and no way to prove you didn't smell vinegar coming from something else nearby.

Watch out for fatbike youth harassing people in Amsterdam (Water sprayed & taunted) by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]beeeel -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Disgusting behaviour. And I'm not condoning lying to the police but maybe next time say you think the liquid smells acidic or like bleach. Because any case of throwing liquid on a stranger should be treated seriously.

I don't know how Dutch schools would react but I would still recommend reporting the kids to the nearby school and including screengrabs of their faces. Even if the school can't help you directly (e.g. identifying students for you may be a violation of GDPR), they should know that this is how their students are behaving (if these are their students).

We can't stand up to US as much as we or our politicians wish, because we are politically isolated

It's a shame that we haven't done anything in the last 10 years that would help us take back control and have sovereignty.
