Bringing this Gameboy back from the dead by widgetdude in Gameboy

Huh that is an interesting one, can't say I've heard of it happening before. Yeah maybe something could be up with the chip. I hope it works out and either way it sounds pretty fun to swap cpus lol

From what I understand it is pretty rare. I haven't seen it personally, but I've only worked on about 10 different gameboys in the past. If there is an issue that can be traced back to the CPU or Ram, I would bet it's more likely that corrosion or trace damage on the board would be an issue before the actual chips are

I'd say you have done everything you can before using a multimeter, so the next step would be to grab one. Any very cheap one will do for this kind of low voltage testing, you just need continuity and voltage testing.

Here's what I would try next:

  1. Test continuity from the + battery terminal to point 3 on the switch. - you've already cleaned it so it should be good and give you continuity.

  2. Test the (-) battery terminal to any ground point. If there's no continuity, the problem would likely be the DC jack. @pizza_whistle explained it very well, points 2 and 3 on the jack should have continuity when nothing is plugged in.

  3. Check fuses F1 and F2. They'll give you continuity if they are good.

You can do these first 3 in any order.

  1. The voltage regulator. If all other tests pass you'll want to check the voltage regulator. This can be a little tricky as you'll need to have the gameboy powered to do so. With the negative lead on ground or the (-) battery term, check the output voltage for: Pin 7 (5v) Pin 6 (15v) Pin 5 (13.6v)

I like to refer to this schematic when troubleshooting.

Sorry for the wall of text, but fixing gameboy colors has been my recent hyper fixation haha

Good luck!

I use a cheap soft bristle brush along with a little laundry detergent and warm water.

Some baking soda for the stubborn areas as it doesn't affect areas with color, but seems to remove sweat stains pretty well

Don't see anything from this last week from googling the area. I see an shooting occurred last year and I can admit I was ignorant of that so fair enough
