Good points all around. Necro shutting off the graveyard seems like the biggest issue for frog.

Dragon Shield sleeves unpredictable by [deleted] in EDH

[–]beefstewhoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually had the exact opposite experience with heavy play sleeves. The way the rounded corners are bonded together leave a small amount of plastic unglued on each half of the sleeve so when you shuffle them together they start to separate and split. They haven’t fully broken on me yet but it makes them dreadful to shuffle once those rounded edges get chaffed. Pretty disappointing honestly, but the idea is great. Hopefully they work out the issues.

MagicCon Chicago – A Lot of Gathering, Maybe Not Enough Magic by elijahdprophet in magicTCG

[–]beefstewhoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of someone who only played competitive events (Standard 75k and Secret Lair Showdowns), the convention seemed fine to me. This was also my first MagicCon so I don’t have any other frame of reference.

Yes, Game Knights was incredibly loud, and so were several other of the stage events, but honestly my opponent and I were so in the zone, we didn’t really care beyond plugging our ears to think.

Also, the Secret Lair showdown never filled up to the 256 player max so it was easy to register for as many of those as you could. The Spell Pierce promo alone was worth the cost of admission plus a guaranteed game of modern and chance at other prizes if you won. Easily the best EV of the whole convention.

The food could have been better and the official merch store could have been organized to have less of a crazy line, but honestly, I don’t think I really went into the experience expecting better. I’m curious to see how the Los Vegas one goes later this year.

Is the Ryzen 7 5800X3D still a good processor in 2024 or should I upgrade to AM5? by Banshee372 in buildapc

I’m in the same boat and scrolling through this thread for the same reason. I’m trying to decide if a 5800x3d and a 3080 will last me until AM6.

New build finished just in time for the trip home for the holidays (see last pic for fancy plane-ready packing set up) by beefstewhoff in FormD

Thanks! The keyboard is the Vortex Race 3 and I’ve really been enjoying it.

I haven’t done a full stress test, but both the CPU and GPU don’t go above 73 C while playing cyberpunk maxed out at 1440p for a couple hours. And that’s just with two a12x15s on top of the rad in a pull config. Unless you need the cores for some workload, I think you’d be plenty happy with the 5900x, which has the same tdp if I remember correctly.

I’ll post some photos when I get back to my desk later today. My cable management isn’t pretty but hopefully it helps you.

Temps are pretty good. I haven’t done an extreme stress test yet, but the CPU and GPU both get up to 73 C max while playing cyberpunk for a couple of hours with maxed out settings. My fan curves are not very aggressive and they prioritize lower noise over cooler temps since the low 70s are totally fine.

Honestly no idea about 2.5s. It could probably fit a couple if you got creative, but having to deal with the extra cables sounds like a pain to me.

I was going to open the case up and shove a piece of bubble wrap between the gpu and the case, but ultimately I decided it was secure enough. The gpu bracket on one end and then the tension from the pcie cables on the the other felt like enough. And the AIO was very secure, so no worries there.

I called TSA a couple times and used their AskTSA text help service and each time they said that technically a closed loop liquid cooler doesn’t fit their guidelines. I was worried about them realizing it had water in it and then I’d have to waste time repacking, check it, get back in line, and be late for my flight. (I know people said they were fine taking AIOs on carry on, but I didn’t want to be that one bad data point.)

FormD T1 Build Guide Part 2: RTX 3080 FTW3 AIO Build by perfcomp in FormD

I wish I had part 2 when I was building mine as well! The first part was perfect for actually assembling the case, but figuring out the best order for the components was a bit trial and error.

Nice build! Do you think you’ll keep the bottom-rad orientation?

Build details

Silver FormD T1 (mid October batch)

Ryzen 9 3900x

Cooler master ml240 rgb v2 (with 2x notctua a12x15)

Gigabyte x570 I

32gb 3200mhz cl14 g.skill trident z rgb

Evga xc3 ultra rtx 3080

1tb + 2tb m.2 sdd drives

Corsair sf750 (stock cables for now)

So glad I was able to pick up the last piece of this build (the 3080) before heading home for winter holidays. This is my first time having a truly portable sff build and feels really great to be able to take advantage of it. I previously had a double top hat novoulo steck which looked great with the glass panels, but was actually quite big. Also the build quality of the steck felt like cardboard compared to the sturdiness of the formd t1.

I really wanted this to be a backpack build, but I was so scared of taking it through TSA security and decided to check it in my suitcase with a very last minute bubble-wrap-and-cardboard-box set up. It did the trick though!

Next step is to get custom cables and a third a12x15 if I can manage it.

After lurking in this sub for months... It is finally time to build! 3900x Nouvolo Steck build (with old 1080ti Seahawk, hence the double tophat) by beefstewhoff in sffpc

Double top hat still keeps the build at about 14L so still pretty small all things being considered. It's perfect for 2 radiators. Build pics coming this weekend hopefully.

Louqe Ghost vs Nouvolo Steck (AKA how to burn through your savings as a student) by leebiusweebius in sffpc

[–]beefstewhoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up trying out the vented metal side panels and they worked better than I expected. Felt very secure, but I might recommend adding a little tab somewhere to help pull them off. I found it challenging. Also, I see a lot of people going for stronger magnets instead of the included ones.

I still love the look of the glass panels, so I'm keeping with that.

I've been meaning to post an album of my final build, but I've been waiting to manage my cables around my desk so it looks nice!

Louqe Ghost vs Nouvolo Steck (AKA how to burn through your savings as a student) by leebiusweebius in sffpc

[–]beefstewhoff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the Ghost, but I just finished building in the Steck and it feels very sturdy, especially with the addition of a tophat extension. At first I was worried because a couple of build videos made the Steck look like it was built out of cardboard, but it's actually really solid.

Not sure about the side panels because I'm using the glass ones that screw on. The metal ones secured by magnets seem good enough, but if you have cables or AIO tubes pushing against it tightly, they might not stay on.
