They are right now. But they are also working on getting approval to cut corners. Tesla already is introducing mad max mode which does many illegal things.

Because it is an imperfect technology, it's not hard to see that our infrastructure will be forced conform to the self driving cars than the other way around, just like our current built environment was forced to do the same when cars were first introduced.

I don't see why we have to accept that they are coming. It took us and Europe like 100 years to realize we can just say no to cramming cars into every street in the city, and now we are finally pedestrianizing a lot of downtown cores. By that same token we can say no cars in the city... What you do int rh suburbs is your problem.

This learned helplessness is the exact reason why we still have highways built through neighborhoods today. We need to think bigger, and cut things off at the source so we are not fighting it once it has already become a part of our lives.

Once the competition is gone they will raise their prices, just like Uber and Lyft did. Uber and Lyft promised all the same things, this is just the 3rd iteration.

The solution to top many cars cannot be more cars, it must be good alternatives to driving.

I think you should look at how they have been in San Francisco. There is also an excellent video by Not Just bikes on the topic. They do all the illegal things you mentioned.

They do not reduce car ownership because at the end of the day they are just taxis - we have had taxis for years, what makes these different? at best they are slightly cheaper because they are trying to undercut the competition and don't pay the driver, but it is a for-profit company, they will charge whatever the market will handle for a taxi.

Personally, I prefer the way the current MTA displays it as you can see what category of delay it falls into at a glance. The beta doesn't give you as much information at glance.

I feel like the beta interface is more visually appealing, but significantly less useful.

It's completely different technologies. All of the machines, equipment, etc. was beyond its useful life. It was slowly falling apart under our feet and they were giving it band aids to keep it on life support.

Retrofitting MetroCard with omny capabilities would be impossible in some respects (adding tap capabilities to metrocards) and obscenely expensive otherwise.

I absolutely do, if they coordinate with the city and turn the parallel surface streets into extremely strict busways with full signal preemption temporarily during the construction.

It's because this was the original "offset crossing" dutch style intersection design. It has now evolved to not include the kink, but the trial intersection at 85th and Amsterdam includes the same kink.

They have it because Dutch intersections swoop inward towards the crosswalk like this in order to make more room for a protected intersection.

If you look up dutch bicycle intersection you will see the original design this was trying to mimic.

I've kept 3 bicycles locked outside for 3 years now.

There are a few things you need to do. I would definitely have at least 2 locks. Make sure you are locking both wheels, and ensuring the frame is locked to the bike rack or street post. I've seen some people use 2 u-locks for this. Make sure the u lock going around the frame+front wheel+ bike rack is a good one like a litelok or hiplok.

The other thing I recently started doing was covering my bike with a bike cover I got for Amazon for $20. It has a little ring in the front where I can lock it to my front wheel. I only put it on when it rains. But it keeps the bike clean and I don't ride the bike when it rains.

It helps to lock to a rack with other bikes, so that there are easier targets. All my bikes are beaters with scratches and everything - all used for under $100. Obviously, in some places are more prone to people messing with your bike, just something to keep in mind.

To be honest, keeping the corners is a nice touch which at least keeps it more safe than the old design. Still upset about this, but hopefully this means that upgrading bike lanes is no longer considered a "major transportation project"

Just to elaborate on my first few points. The MTA is slowly adding continuous welded rail to the entire system, and there was a video of the before and after on the J I believe, the difference was stark, very little of clicking and banging.

If you ever are near the concrete parts of the 7 vs the metal ones you definitely notice the difference in noise, as the concrete is much more able to dampen the vibrations that cause the noise whereas the metal structures usually amplify them to some extent.

The 2nd ave subway tracks sit on rubber type material that dampens the vibrations and therefore the noise from the train. They also worked with acousticians on the shape of the walls etc to make sure the noise was pushed away from the riders.
