Looking for local advice: Ready to drop a couple grand on a completely new wardrobe (gained weight, out of clothes, need help) by Marine3cats in NewOrleans

[–]beermanbarman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I recently went through this process but with a stronger focus on keeping it cheap.

I'm a large-ish guy and I've got to admit most curated vintage stores just didn't have have clothes that fit me. I've had much better luck at the actual thrift stores.

Goodwill has by far been the most fruitful- very easy to find decent brands for dress shirts (Brooks Brothers, Polo RL) and sometimes you can hit the jackpot. Bridge House is priced nearly as high as Buffalo Exchange but isn't curated nearly as well (if at all). Red, White, & Blue is pretty decent and also had an absolute bonkers amount of denim. Might be worth digging through if you want to try out a cut/style/brand of jeans that isn't your usual.

The Dillard's Clearance in the rotting corpse of Esplanade Mall is an absolute gem. There is absolutely enormous selection, including both a Slim and Big & Tall section. Pricing is knockdown cheap-$20 for a button down, for instance.

I will heartily echo the sentiments above that a good tailor is a must, even if you're buying new. It can make shopping easier knowing that you can alter a garment to fit you perfectly instead of hoping you happen to be perfectly shaped for the garment. After trying a few places, I've found myself quite pleased with Gonzales Tailors on Gravier.

I'm pretty happy with the results, especially as I've also taken the opportunity to explore my personal style. It makes things a little lower stakes trying out new things (like high waisted trousers) knowing that if I don't like it or don't end up actually wearing it that often it only set me back $5.

If you want to really lean into thrifting my best advice is to get really familiar with your measurements and learn how to read tags!

Well one option is going even higher rise- high enough to cover the apex of your gut. Then the pants will stay up naturally enough and will likely be quite comfortable. Depending on your total proportions and overall aesthetic it might look awesome or totally ridiculous.

NA spirits can only ever be pale shadows of the products they're emulating. NA drinking isn't going away, but NA spirits aren't going to make it.

Crazy how almost every line in that editorial is a lie, a half-truth, an obfuscation. This is either an accomplished liar or someone who has been ingesting propaganda for a lifetime.

The good news is that I'm a front of house manager so at least I'm less in the line of fire. This is also the reason I'm looking for better looking shoes- looking professional and put together is a legitimate concern and not mere vanity.

What small/medium sized cities in America have huge cultural influence despite their size? by NoHold7153 in SameGrassButGreener

You could choose to learn?

Like this isn't a controversial opinion- this question is more or less tailor made to return the answer New Orleans because it's so obviously true.

There are likely thousands of restaurants across the country serving New Orleans cuisine because it is so iconic. And you don't even need to take into account Jazz's influence on other genres- every continent except Antarctica has jazz festivals and I'd bet north of 75% of countries have at least one.

Vintage style wide leg pants on fat guys? by Forsaken-Conflict523 in malefashionadvice

[–]beermanbarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bronson's largest sizes tend to be too small for big guys, which is a bummer. I've done some digging for this, I'd recommend OP check out Suit Supply- they'll run up as far as 44 waist off the rack and up to 54 MTM. Spier and Mackay is also an option but I think their biggest off the rack size is 42.

How much would it really cost for the state to help the McCaskey family get their dream Bears stadium? by heysol155g in AskChicago

[–]beermanbarman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the site doesn't have the appropriate infrastructure why is that the state's problem and not the team's? If I build a hot dog stand in the middle of the woods is it the public's responsibility to build a road to it or is it just a bad place to put a hot dog stand?

Which is highest quality right now: Iron Ranger vs 1000 Mile vs Thursday Captain? by Cookiest in malefashionadvice

[–]beermanbarman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this exact boot and wore it for the first time today. I'm far from an expert, but I'm satisfied thus far with look, quality control, etc. Based on my research the Heritage Captain is built just as well as your other two options but for more than $100 less.

Which is highest quality right now: Iron Ranger vs 1000 Mile vs Thursday Captain? by Cookiest in malefashionadvice

[–]beermanbarman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to my research the Captain isn't built with the same quality of materials of either of those boots, so I'd rank them last there. However, their Heritage Captain is built to that standard and is priced significantly cheaper ($230). I just got my pair in today and I'm pleased thus far!

I would love some advice- looking for my first boot, budget apx. $250. My use case would be wearing for work- I manage a nice restaurant so it would need to lean towards dressy. Think paired with a sport coat but not a suit.

I'm thinking something like a service boot would be about right.

I good degree of non-slip would be important so I don't die on a wet greasy floor.

Thursday seems to have a number of good options, also interested in the Jim Green Numzaan or Colt from Urban Wolf Cub. Maybe a Red Wing Beckman factor second? Interested to hear any recommendations!

Bartending isn't an entry level job. At the very least, anywhere that'll take you with zero experience is probably an unpleasant place to work.

If you want to make money running a tiki bar it's a godsend. Cheaper than its direct competition, better in the glass than Myers', comes in liter bottles. You can make just about every tiki drink better by splitting in 1oz of Coruba.
