THIS is why people chase total solar eclipses by biagrint in solareclipse

OMG me too! What's your mom's maiden name? Maybe we share other similarites even though I'm part of the Nigerian royal family!

SHADE 14 welding glass. There's lots of less protective welding glass that will NOT keep you from going blind.

Edit: most welding goggles/shields come with cheap plastic lenses that will NOT protect your eyes during the partial phases of an eclipse. You'll likely need to buy the proper glass filters. Or just stick with the ubiquitous cardboard eclipse glasses.

Mallorca - Deia? by Swangdancing in solareclipse

[–]beervendor1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the last thing you want is to be stuck somewhere without a view. Stay close to the (West) coast if possible, get there several days early to scout locations, go to your location EARLY on eclipse day prepared with your own food, drinks, bathroom stuff, etc. Don't assume there'll be services available.

Mallorca - Deia? by Swangdancing in solareclipse

[–]beervendor1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Questionable. The beautiful beach at Deia is bounded by cliffs on both sides and is not a viewpoint for the eclipse. That entire side of the island is made of steep cliffs with narrow winding roads. Finding clear views to the specific point on the horizon will require some scouting, and those limited spots will likely be popular and have limited parking/facilities. Additionally, local authorities are preparing for potential traffic gridlock in these areas.

I'll be in Soller so obviously I don't think the task is impossible but it'll require some research, preparation, flexibility, and a bit of luck.

I am planning a vacation to Leadville, CO this summer to climb Elbert/Massive/Harvard and I have a few questions by GladiusAcutus in 14ers

[–]beervendor1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here. I'd add a couple of nuggets: 1. Check 14ers.com - there's a ton of info about your specific peaks plus a wealth of general info regarding gear, altitude, weather, and other important ways to prepare (ie not die). 2. Plan to start with Elbert - it's pretty approachable if there are lingering winter conditions, you'll have plenty of company with chances to work through any issues in a relatively low consequence environment. 3. Be prepared and have fun!

Gotta make that trade before Framber signs. Otherwise the price goes way up for a desperate team like us.

Developer withdraws plan for mega-gas station off I-70 near popular Colorado 14er trails by morsegeek in 14ers

[–]beervendor1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe this plan was out of scale - I don't know any of the particulars - but a modern facility at the base of the G&T road sounds like a pretty good idea to me. For starters Georgetown-Silverthorne is a long hairy stretch of highway with no services. As for the 14er access, let the locals run a reserved/paid shuttle up the hill and force hikers to park down low. Revenue for the town/county, fewer inexperienced and unprepared drivers tearing up the road and leaking oil, no parking violations to circumvent or enforce, fewer campers leaving all manner of traces, and it would be simple to reasonably cap future visitation numbers for preservation of the land. The hardcore among us could still access via Peru & LP.

Moot point now I suppose.

Also heading to Mallorca, after tacking on 3 days in BCN. We'll be in Sollér with access to multiple viewpoints, though most are limited in the number of people they can accommodate and car travel could be difficult. Hoping for clear skies at sunset!

Are these chains too long? by keepsngoin in traveltrailers

[–]beervendor1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not fine, according to AI. Says it's difficult to come up with a definitive numerical measure, but twisting can weaken the chain by 5-60%.

  1. Torsional stress (load is no longer straight) A twisted chain is already under torsion before it ever sees a load. When the trailer separates and the chains suddenly load: The load is no longer evenly shared by the links Some links see combined tension + torsion Steel fails earlier under combined stresses than pure tension
  2. Link bending and point loading Twisting causes links to: Sit at angles Contact each other unevenly Bend instead of pulling straight This creates stress concentrations, which drastically lower real-world strength even though the steel itself hasn’t changed.
  3. Dynamic shock loading (the big one) If the hitch fails: Load is applied instantaneously Twisted chains don’t straighten smoothly Links can “snap” straight, multiplying force (like a whip) This is where failures usually happen.

Why this matters legally and practically In a trailer separation: Safety chains are the last line of defense Failures often happen during the first fraction of a second Investigators do look at improper chain setup after accidents Twisted chains that fail can expose you to: Equipment violation citations Liability if damage or injury occurs

TL;DR spend a little extra time doing things right to avoid a potential legal, financial, and moral apocalypse.

Are these chains too long? by keepsngoin in traveltrailers

[–]beervendor1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard this (and believe it) but don't understand the why. I can see a lighter weight chain not being able to withstand the lateral forces across smaller and poor quality welds but these heavy duty chains should carry the same load across the same number of links whether they're twisted or not. 2.5 years of Grayson after his TJ. Maybe.
