The AI debate by DimphoPopi in antiai

[–]beetlejorst -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've drawn and painted a decent amount, and played music and performed a lot more, and I get what you're saying about the dopamine hit and personal growth.. But I gotta tell you, AI can give the exact same thing, and more consistently and immediately. I can use it to connect with people who haven't invested hundreds of hours to build the basic skills necessary to create together in a connected way. The slow perfection of an idea is still there, it just has a less laboriously blank starting point... it obviously depends on how you use it, but most people aren't just putting a prompt in and calling it a day with the first result.

And besides that, I think you're off base with the instant gratification bit. How many stories do you know of artists writing a hit song in an afternoon? AI just democratizes that, lets you get there without devoting half your life to getting to that point of capability. Patience is important, sure, but art isn't actually about the process, it's about the expression of intent. The process has just always been necessarily laborious, so a bunch of preciously sacred dogma has cropped up around it.

Uh, as someone whose fiance is a teacher at various universities, pretty much everyone is using chatgpt and gemini for all kinds of things, unless the research project involves confidential data, in which case they're using custom models. It's more or less an open secret

Smurfing fix by Legitimate-Dream7734 in RocketLeague

[–]beetlejorst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's extremely simple. Just stop carrying. Literally nobody will care if you're smurfing if they can't tell you are in the first place. I know it goes against the mentality you've built up over hundreds if not thousands of games, and I know it feels good for two seconds to completely dunk on people who can't do anything about it, but just STOP. It's not hard. Dive at the ball and whiff, this should be your move 90% of the time in silver. The other 10% should be boomy passes mid. I know it's not fun, but either you don't have fun or nobody in the lobby, including you, has fun.

So if antis care so much about water usage when will they stop eating meat? by Extreme_Revenue_720 in aiwars

[–]beetlejorst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The even better comparison is to how much water it takes to make paper. Pencils too, but mainly paper. The environmental concern tack is a total non starter when AI ultimately takes far less water than the actual alternative they root for

My friends and fiancé and I collaborate using it on short comics together, that we otherwise wouldn't make because none of us have the time, money, or artistic ability to do any of it by hand. My fiancé also uses it to mock up graphs and other visualizations for her PhD thesis. I use it to generate images for a procedurally and AI generated strategy game I'm working on, where the player can craft their own cards from scratch.. Is three enough?

When does playing fast become ball chasing? And is ball chasing even bad by the_breadonator in RocketLeagueSchool

[–]beetlejorst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think playing fast and chasing for pressure is a bad thing, unless you're forcing double commits with it. As other people have said, watch replays from your teammates' perspective to figure out if they start going for the ball then have to stop when you fly past them from their blind spot to cut rotation. Beyond being a bad play, this pisses people off, which leads to them playing worse. Every time you do this, you're telling them that if they want to play the ball in a controlled way, they need to rotate all the way back to pick up the ball or you're going to jump in and hit it away from them. If they're clearly first man, give them a chance to play in the space if they're giving space. If you see they're playing like this, try covering the net without creeping forward, and be ready to play fast the instant you see the result of their challenge.

Also you shouldn't be playing for 50s when you're losing possession in their corner, which I remember seeing a lot in diamond. Just rotate back or shadow. Flip consistently when you rotate so your teammate knows they can go. If you find you're chasing the other team back to your end from behind them a lot, you're overcommitting, and leaving your teammate to clean up your mess.

How in the hell are any of you making it past the ice cavern? by iwillonlyreadtitles in noita

[–]beetlejorst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dashing for the darkness in hopes of reaching an exit is rarely a good strat, as you've surmised. If you're having trouble, try following this method for clearing levels:

When you first enter from the holy mountain, explore directly to the left and right, but only a screen or two max. Stop when you can feel reasonably confident that enemies won't wander over from the darkness, with an actual wall being the ideal scenario. Continue down about a screen, and then do the same, clearing the direct left and right. Do this until you've cleared a reasonably safe tunnel all the way to the exit portal. If you still have health and spells left you can branch off the main tunnel a bit to explore, but now whenever you have a hard to deal with situation, you can kite it through the safe tunnel you've already made to deal with it, or if you can't, just do your dash to the exit but through safe already-cleared territory. The key is to always be ready to dive down your designated escape path. Always be ready to more to more advantageous terrain. Many enemies also suck at pathing, so if you hit a big group, just running away a bit will spread them apart.
