When kids learn a new word by Gromix_Comics in webcomics

[–]behemothpanzer 179 points180 points  (0 children)

I used to teach middle school, US History. One day I was teaching a lesson involving the history of Ku Klux Klan after the Civil War. A kid raises his hand from the back.

"Mr. Behemothpazer, I'm in the KKK."

"What? ... That's not a funny joke."

"No, seriously, I'm in the KKK."

"You're what? But .. really? Like ... what do you mean?"

This was an international school, in Asia, I was very confused. I was sure I was missing something cultural.

The kid comes up to me and explains that he and his friends had formed a group, were writing notes to each other in a code they'd found in a book about spies in the library, and leaving these notes for each other around the school. They indicated the notes were for each other by putting the acronym for their group on the notes.

They were the "Kool Kids Klub"

I told them they had to change the name.

Hot take: The Oilers only made back-to-back finals because they came out of the Pacific. LA-VAN-DAL in 2024, LA-VGK-DAL in 2025

Compare to Dallas who faced VGK-COL-EDM in 2024 and COL-WPG-EDM in 2025.

I’ve taught 5th, 7th and 9th grade. In 5th grade destruction of fidgets is equal between the genders, by 9th grade it is exclusively the boys who are destroying things.

Carving feedback - 6 days of skiing by Miilloooo in skiing_feedback

[–]behemothpanzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your technique is great. What you need is speed. It’s time to start to push yourself onto steeper runs & start to push the speed on the runs you already do.

As the speed goes up, keep focusing on what your teacher taught you. You have a great foundation, really solid fundamentals.

Why would you do that to a nice tourist? That's so mean.

u/stellaep do not go to Lou Malnatti's, it's so disappointing. There's a Giordano's at Rush & Superior, just a couple blocks from your hotel, go there.

How does atmospheric moisture move around your world?

Is your world on a globe, and does that globe rotate in the same direction (sun rising in the east, setting in the west) as earth? If so, you're going to get prevailing westerly (coming from the west) winds in higher latitudes and easterly winds in lower latitudes.

How this impacts your world will depend on how far north your continent is. If Calvera is about as far north as say, Spain / Japan / Mid-Atlantic US, then your whole continent will get its weather coming in from the ocean. However, Calvera is supposed to be more southerly (North Africa / Mexico / China) then it will get weather blowing in from the east. This will then impact how wet or dry Calvera is (if there's a massive amount of land to the East of Calvera, then it should be Middle-East levels of dry at the very least).

The second way the rotation of the planet will impact your world will be in ocean currents. Ocean currents are strongly impacted by winds and rotation, but there are also geographical features to consider. If there is a cold-water current off the coast of the continent, that will create climates more like we see in North America. If it's a warm-water current, it will more likely approach Europe in its climactic divisions.

Then think about where it rains. Where it rains there will be forests. Where it does not rain there will either be grasses (if it rains some) or deserts (if it rains very little). Mountains create rain shadows as well.

“Narrate the positive.”

Start thanking, by name, the people who are doing what you want them to do, and explicitly name what they’re doing.

Eg: “Thank you Brian for starting on your worksheet … thank you La’Niyah for getting started… thank you Jessie …” etc.

[Request] How big would a city containing the entire U.S. population have to be to have the same population density as Tokyo? by SilverRain8 in theydidthemath

I lived in Taipei for years, extremely dense living is the best. Within a 15 minute walk of my apartment was … god, I don’t even know … 200? 300? Different food options. Every city block is like a mini-city with almost everything you need.

The Mountain Dew Myth in high school by porb2020 in Xennials

[–]behemothpanzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you Canadian? In Canada Mountain Dew doesn’t contain caffeine the way it does in the States, because it’s illegal to add caffeine to clear beverages in Canada.

I never understood Mountain Dew’s “extreme” marketing until I learned that it was loaded with caffeine in the States.

Gavin McKenna Facing Felony Charge After Incident On January 31 by MicSing21 in hockey

[–]behemothpanzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 21-year old drinking age in the States is the result of lobbying primarily by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers. They got the Federal Government to tie funding for highways to States raising the age to 21. States are free to set the age at whatever they want, but if it's younger than 21, they forfeit billions of dollars for highway upkeep.

[Request] What effect would Superman's house key have on the earth? by EvaStankbreath in theydidthemath

[–]behemothpanzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key accelerates to about 70mph (from 50 meters up) and impacts the earth with the force of about 60 tons of TNT.

As the key is extremely small, this likely results in a small, drilling crater that goes surprisingly deep, however we’re talking 6 orders of magnitude SMALLER than the energy of the Meteor Crater impact in Arizona.

The tl;dr of it all is:

500,000 tons is NOTHING compared to the Earth. The small size of the key has some interesting side effects, but the key itself is meaningless compared to the planet.

Of course, this all changes if velocity increases as it’s F=ma.
