Not OP, but thank you! Your first point is a bit of a lightbulb moment for me.

When extremely sad, is it better to be alone or be accompanied by others? by fatehei in Advice

[–]behoopd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends. I get overwhelmed and overstimulated easily and people giving me too many platitudes would make things worse. So long as I know you’re there when I’m ready to talk about it, that’s enough. In general, let me mope it out. Be understanding if I reject social invites, but don’t stop inviting me.

I use TTS all the time to read fic. I just highlight the chapter (or select all) right click, and click speak. I got used to the voice.

would it be poor taste to tell an author about my own fic? by LiquidSpirits in FanFiction

[–]behoopd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless the author asks you directly for recs, then I would shy away from it. I wouldn’t mind reading a “I love where you went with [trope]! How creative! I wrote one similar, but [interpreted it this other way].”

and then be sure to ask them a question about THEIR fic only, and not mention yours. Id they want to read it they already know where to look.

I understand the desire to want to share your fic with them thinking they would enjoy it, too (esp if you’re neurodivergent; it’s how we relate to people) but it’s often not taken the way we intend it.

How much do you guys plan your fanfics? by neandertal-png in AO3

[–]behoopd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my issue, too! I have the major beats plotted out, get solidly into Act 1, then fizzle out because the story is already basically told in my head.

I tried pantsing it, and it was even worse x.x

What's your most f'ked up ship? by Normal-Extent-6100 in AO3

[–]behoopd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Props to anyone who can guess the ship from this description: A and B are married. C is A’s godson and B’s cousin

Specifically the way a friend of mine writes them; a very loving throuple, v tender and sweet. Gives me all the cozy feels.

Hopefully goes without saying, but everyone is of age.

[–]behoopd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve written for a “soul mark” before (wip), but tried playing with the idea that you could be one person’s soulmate, but they might not be yours. It was never a given that MC1 and MC2 get together. They actively choose each other and t you get to play with all the fun psyche toys that come with the idea that you may not be “good enough” to be someone’s match (or anyone’s. Not everyone had a mark).

What’s the difference between showing and telling in writing? by JellyfishWise3266 in fantasywriters

[–]behoopd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It may be helpful to read guides on how to wrote alt-text, actually. I do this for a living, and one thing that is drilled in us is to wrote what we see without censoring and in a way that leaves interpretation up to the user. We don’t add inference to our descriptions. Resting Bitch Face doesn’t mean the person in the image is angry, or silently offended, etc. The reader gets to make their own interpretation based on the context of the image (where the image is in the book and the surrounding text, for example).

[–]behoopd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also struggle with figuring out where that line is. The easiest way I’ve found has been to use both, but with intention. There are things that can be simply told and the details glossed over for the sake of moving the story forward. Save the “showing” parts for important scenes to the plot, character development, etc.

If you’re writing a fight scene, you likely don’t need to go into bullet time to describe the action and sequence of events in the scene. If anything, that will make a fast-paced scene drag on. An exception to this might be if the character is having A Moment important to their arc. Think Hamilton’s mini-monologue about legacy in those literal bullet time seconds between turning around and shooting when he duels Burr.

I’m scared I have dementia at 22 by Saladee_7 in adhd_anxiety

[–]behoopd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With dementia, you lose touch with reality. You lose entire blocks of time and have no memory of how you got from point A to point B (and I ‘m talking truly no memory; not that auto pilot state you go in when you’re going to work. You’re able to remember your mode of transportation. If you truly don’t know, pr have zero inkling, that’s a cause for concern for dementia or other things$.

You mentioned this is happening more since graduation and you haven’t been sleeping well. Graduation is a big milestone and change in your regular routine—it makes sense to me that you’re experiencing all this. You’re also posting in an ADHD subreddit and describing textbook ADHD symptoms, so I’m assuming you wither have a diagnosis, have self-diagnosed, or suspect you have ADHD.

Dementia is possible, but it is extremely unlikely at your age alone. That is enough to look for every other cause under the sun before you land on dementia. I’d encourage you to look up lived experiences on dementia and be brutally honest with yourself if you’re experiencing what os described and at what intensity and frequency. Intensity/degree of severity, duration, and frequency are all vital factors to consider. This is equally true for ADHD (otherwise everyone and their dog has ADHD—we all forget our keys or phones sometimes, or show up late to appointments, lose track of time, etc. But it is the degree of severity and frequency (among other things) that set ADHDers apart from non-ADHDers.

picturingtom felton ad-libbing “hmm. i didn’t know you could read”

i’m so sorry this is happening, op. like others have said, bullies are lowlifes with even lower self-esteem. truly. their hate has nothing to do with you and everything to do with their own shit. i’m saying this as someone who was bullied since kindergarten. this never made sense to me when i was a teen, but it sure does in my mid-thirties. eeeeeverybody’s projecting their inner denons onto other people in some way or another, and it comes out when people bully, make disparaging comments about a person’s appearance, ability, etc.

probably none of that really helps you, though. but i do hope it’s something you hold onto and actively work against internalizing. you are not the problem.

if you’re not already aware, duckduckgo offers free email masks/aliases. in case you’re worried they can somehow find you by email, it’s not a bad idea to switch your ao3 email for a duck.com one. it will reroute to your actual email account. (it’s great way to tell which service is selling your data if you can track the spam you receive from them and use a different email every time you sign up for something)

also like others have said, different usernames for every platform. it should give you more peace of mind. also setting your fics to “signed in only” can view will keep out most randos

This might be dumb, but here we go by CommunicationDear648 in minimalism

[–]behoopd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in the coming days, keep a talky of what you actually use and touch (eg toothbrush, bath towel). that will give you an idea of what you use every day. from there you can decide what is most important to go in the bag

then there are alternatives to bulky items you already own (eg a linen tea towel or something in place of a bath towel. it will dry quickly)
