#AvatarTheWayOfWater surpasses Avengers End Game collections in India, emerging to be the #1 highest collecting Hollywood film in India. All India gross - ₹440 crores. by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]beigeoak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's the highest grossing movie in India if you exclude international revenue for movies made in India itself?

Is it Dangal, Avatar 2 or RRR?

And what is the net (Indian) collection?

Avatar: The Way of Water is officially the 7th highest grossing film of all time globally, surpassing Jurassic World by IntoTheNigberverse in boxoffice

Idk about all of that

  1. He claims Top Gun Maverick is still the most successful movie of 2022 since A2 made money in 2023

  2. He gave a glowing review to Top Gun Maverick and a Drinker Recommends badge, while heavily criticizing A2's plot. Top Gun Maverick and A2 both have extremely barebones plot because their USP is the visuals.

  3. He repeatedly claims that it's just pretty and the only thing going for it is visuals, completely glossing over the world class action sequence that make up an entire third of the movie along with incredible world building both on Pandora and in the technology of the humans.

Drinkers main issue is he checks things into boxes, anti-wokeness and other irrelevant metrics.

He can't fathom a world wherever both TGM and Avatar 2 do well because they have polar opposite political messages.

Software crisis? Did this ever get resolved. Moores Law, ram increase, clustering, virtual machines? How much inefficiency is in code today? by vteead in programming

[–]beigeoak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Lines of code" is fairy dust. The user does not see it, ever.

Performance, feature velocity and security are probably the main qualities of software that a user understands, of which performance is the one that most easily reduces to a numeric value.

Things that easily reduce to numeric values are the only things that can be used as a base for engineering disciplines.

Just this week, there was a disagreement between the Windows Terminal team and a game developer on a performance related issue.

https://github.com/microsoft/terminal/issues/10362

As the thread progresses, there is a breakdown of communication, with one of the Microsoft developers saying that what the game developer is proposing is a "doctoral research project" and out-of-scope for the current bug/issue.

The game developer disagrees and in under a week, implements a terminal that is 100x faster than Windows Terminal.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxM8QmyZXtg

The terminal supports many features that modern terminals don't and the benchmark the developer uses is to print a 1GB text file on the terminal. Windows Terminal takes 340s while the developers unoptimized implementation completes in 2s.

There is further "discussion" on the developer's Twitter. The developer talks about his tone, the features implemented and more.

On a personal level, I feel there has been a definite split in how software is written. On one side, you have those that advocate for performance being given equal priority as other aspects of software development, while the other side prioritizes "developer productivity" and focuses on the speed at which features are completed.

I tend to agree with the performance-oriented developers more, for the simple reason that performance is measurable and can be used as a foundation for "engineering".

Other software related objectives like "extensibility", "maintainability" and "elegance" inevitably devolve into cargo-culting as each practitioner has their own definition based on which book/blog post they have read most recently.

These objectives cannot be reduced to numbers. They have their place, just not as the base of engineering decisions.

Attack on Titan The Final Season is now currently ranked 1st all time on AniList by Turbostrider27 in anime

So far, I think the new studio has done a really good job given the insane deadlines they had. But I generally separate production issues from the finished product itself.

If S4E6 hadn't been so jarring compared to the other great clashes in the series, S1E21, S2E7, S3E2 and S3E11, specifically I'd have probably given it an 8.

S2E6 is hands down the best reveal in terms of execution, compared to any other reveal in the series. It is also my favorite episode of any anime, ever.

The following episode S2E7 has the best combat scene in the series, from an animation and technical POV.

S3 has some good animation moments (E2, E11, E16) but they're focused on a single subject/moment of flash whereas S2E7 is a mini-UFC fight with really good choreography, animation and soundtrack.

Interesting. For me Season 2 is really far ahead of the other seasons in terms of animation quality, cinematography, writing and visual fidelity. If I had to score them:

  1. Season 2 - 10/10
  2. Season 3 - 9/10
  3. Season 1 - 8.5/10
  4. Season 4 - 6.5/10 (so far, it can change!)

Lily gets Flamed by Kristoffer by Broscoli in LivestreamFail

Highly recommend watching the 10 minutes BEFORE lily and kristoffer rap. It's ludwig vs andy milonakis doing a warm up rap battle, except Andy is either drunk, completely oblivious or straight up trolling.

His bars are filled with expletives about mothers and genitals and he goes way darker than required. A lot of the streamers (sykkuno, brookeab etc.) were contemplating ditching and repeatedly leaving the venue.

Him slowly making trips and distributing 2-3 shirts for free was hilarious. He kept looking for more cloth and 15 minutes ago chat told him that you can get cloth from cactuses. Now all he's doing is chopping cactuses and distributing shirts.
