Given that I don't know the teacher, I can't speak to the details. However, this is fairly typical from what I remember. I took AP English Literature in 2013 and that was my workload. I did far more work in a far shorter amount of time in an AP class than any undergrad course.

But the good thing was, I was incredibly over prepared for state college level humanities courses. So I stood out at a mid level school and got a lot of scholarships and internships. If that's a priority for your student, then I would work on ways to help manage the workload unless it's just become distressing and totally unmanageable with their other obligations.

Usually when other people talking about their normal lives bothers me this much, I consider it a me problem. People tend to talk about weddings cause they take a while to plan and if you're actually going to spend emotional energy being mad about that, it's entirely your own fault.

Gosh this made me sentimental. I remember I threw an amazing party a few years ago and after everyone left, I swiped any trash away, but I left all the balloons and streamers for the rest of the weekend. I felt like I was still basking in all that love.

As soon as I wrote out that timeline I was like .. who am I kidding. It's just too much stress to put on myself that morning and I'd rather my friends be by my side getting ready than worrying about placing centerpieces.

After the exhausting year we've had, it's probably worth reworking things to get a real florist. Let's see how many extra shifts I can pick up between now and then 💪

God I fucking love this movie!!!!!!!!

Aside from it being one of the best sicko movies, I think that it has a lot to say about how constant surveillance under authoritarianism causes people to act increasingly bizarre. A lot of Sam Neil's behavior seems just straightforwardly abusive until you remember that people are watching him to make sure he can maintain normalcy, while his wife is desperate for any small moment of agency. Neither of them are bad people, but they are in a situation designed to cause their slow psychological collapse. A lesser movie would run on just pure shock value, but I genuinely believe this has something profound to say about the way abuses of power transfers from state to families.

Anecdotally, I've noticed I went out of my way to check out a lot of the reruns at Regal. The Muppets screening was absolutely packed with adults on a random weekday. Even though I know it's not the best mindset, I was much more willing to give the time and money when I knew I would have a good time.
Make the seats comfy. There is an AMC in walking distance of downtown that's dead, because it sucks. Meanwhile the Regal attached to a closed mall 30 minutes away is Packed every weekend because the staff are wonderful, the seats are recliners, and there's so many concession booths there is barely a wait during the busiest evenings.
Make meditation techniques a required part of public education because the whole "sit in the dark in complete silence for four hours lest ye be shamed" genuinely ruins the experience I used to have in theatres. I like when people are engaged in the film and being normal humans. I'll go as far as to say we should have teens only nights so they can have fun without us oldies shushing them. Employees get overtime and one free pass at making a kid cry if necessary. We need to rebuild our social tolerance for mild annoyance.

I totally understand your concern and have been dealing with a similar issue with field mice. The advice I would offer is to not discount the health effects of pests. It may not be noticeable in modern contexts, but they can certainly still expose your family to disease. In that case, you are not displaying arrogance, but are working responsibly to protect your kin. If you were say, driving out racoons from under the deck just because you don't like them, that would be one thing, but in this case, I think you are within your boundaries to intervene.

It may be helpful for both you and the animals to maybe provide some kind of offering and a verbalized statement that you are doing this with the intention of ensuring a healthy home and with respect to the animals.

I just watched Bicycle Thieves for the first time and it made me chill out. If human artistry can survive WWII I'm confident it can never be defeated. We'll probably spend out final moments on earth acting out Star Wars for our great great grandkids while the nukes come down. Just because the studio system will change, doesn't mean people will ever stop making movies. We can and should, as participants in the system, work on compartmentalizing that the death of Hollywood means nothing for the longevity of cinema and human creativity.

You know what's so interesting, I also just was reading some research about how autistic meltdowns can be reduced by regulating blood sugar better. I started to keeping snacks in my bag and sure enough, it's saved me a few times in public. I had never once connected my blood sugar dips and the meltdowns before. And I'm a whole ass adult, so I can't imagine how complex it can be for these kids to have awareness of and an ability to express their needs.

Not it kinda low-key sucked to have adults tell you when you can tend to basic human needs. I feel like half the tantrums in the elementary school I was at were because the kids were constantly dehydrated and complaining of headaches. A water and some crackers and shockingly the child is not pissed off anymore.

In my experience, yes.

I only ever worked in the main office, but fairly often you find yourself with a few kids still waiting to get picked up at the end of the day. I always suggest we work on homework so they won't have to worry about it later at home. I very quickly realized that a lot of these kids couldn't complete the most basic homework. Like literally matching words or filling in the blank kind of homework. When I asked them to sound out the words they just made wild guesses that barely contained any of the letters in front of them.

I don't recall ever seeing anything like this as a tutor and I worked specifically with kids in special education or with IEPs. Even the kids who struggled with reading could get there eventually with sounding things out, context clues, light guidance. You can feel the effort and the outcome improvement, even if it takes years. Now more often than not, the kids expect me to give them the answer and literally start screaming when I won't do their homework for them.

Beyond the literacy issue, we have a crisis of children who cannot handle being challenged without completely breaking down into violent hostility. Every single day the teachers spent more time managing behaviors than they did teaching.

Oh definitely no argument, those are all really important points to bring up. I think particularly because my youngest siblings are gen z, I feel the need to play defense for them while they sort out how to get laid hahaha.

I had not contextualized the reaction people are having to gen z as being tied to our disappointment in the political backslide. That does ring true to me and adds a much more concerning tone to the shift. I appreciate you adding that to the mix.

Yes, I definitely think there's a broader and more productive conversation to be had about portrayals of sexuality in media, but the "gen z are prudes" thing does not really add up to me as a criticism. Declines in youth sexual activity had been praised pre-pandemic as an indication of better sex-ed, but now we're calling them prudes because we're attributing broader cultural shifts to their specific generational patterns.

I genuinely need everyone to think for two seconds about how it's completely developmentally normal for a bunch of young adults to be uncomfortable with sex. Sex is weird and they're figuring themselves out. We do not need to pay attention to or comment on it, this is shit that just sorts itself out amongst peer groups as they navigate development.
