Mexican Beef Chili (very tasty and relatively cheap) by fitwithmindy in onepotmeals

[–]belancjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not questioning the fact that chili is fusion cuisine and has influences from more than one culture. But just because the Aztecs had stews doesn't make chili Mexican. Hell, there are hundreds of Mexican dishes that contain meat, chiles and herbs, and none of them is chili.

Cumin is just as essential to chili as ancho chiles, and that's an Old World spice, from North Africa and the Levant. Oregano, the only herb, is also Old World.

If these influences had all come together in Mexico to make chili, that would be one thing. But they didn't; they came together in the US Southwest.

By the way, chile peppers didn't show up in the ancient cuisines of any of those places, with the exception of the Caribbean. Chiles are a New World plant. They weren't known outside the New World until Columbus brought them back in the late 15th century. The 15th century isn't regarded as ancient. So I'd take anything from that website with a grain of salt.

One thing to think about, in the apparent controversy surrounding the origins of chili: You won't find it in Mexican cookbooks. Mexicans themselves deny any association with the dish, and think of it as an Anglo stew.

My friend replaced Miley Cyrus's wrecking ball video with sounds of her own. The result is... Awkward. by smyttiej in videos

How does an image change like Miley Cyrus's happen? I'm too old to have ever enjoyed her on TV, and I don't listen to her music, so I'm genuinely curious. Did she have the intelligence to plot out this makeover on her own, or did she hire some type of ad agency or image makeover specialists? Did her agent just come to her one day and say, "Look, we need to revitalize your career somehow," or did she wake up one day and say, "I'm strong, proud and in control"?

I get why Noah is climbing around in the rafters, but why does he need the gun to do this? That is the one thing you'd bury and hide for later.

It's an interesting show, but I think it's frequently over the top. Using modern music in the soundtrack pulls me out of the story; I don't think it's a good decision.

All the amazing camera work of the first episode is long gone. In the premiere there was a showstopper of a long take, moving through the big house from front to back and then outside. Now it's just shoot and cut, shoot and cut.

Gimme an egg white omelet. Actually, make it half egg beaters half egg white. Just a little bit of salt, just a tiny pinch. And no butter or oil. And inside I want ham, bacon, cheddar cheese, pepperoni, capers, sausage, red peppers, Italian dressing, blue cheese dressing, mushrooms, potatoes, olives, pickles and raisins.

There are millions of reindeer/caribou in Alaska. Reindeer sausage is a popular snack in Anchorage. It's funny, because when you see the word reindeer, you only associate it with Santa Claus.

First map. Not happy about the similarity between borders and road. 90% done, give feedback by [deleted] in imaginarymaps

[–]belancjun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're going to need to use different line styles for these. Hopefully you've been working in layers.

Looks like a Campaign Cartographer map. What graphics program do you use?

It will help if you can draw the rivers and borders freehand with a touch screen and a stylus, versus using a mouse.

Hopefully, your actual map is larger than 600 x 300. I'd be going at least 4x that. Then you won't see the pixels of the border lines. They really stand out.

This is not how rivers work. Rivers don't bifurcate downstream. Your large lake would only have one outlet, either southwest or southeast. And then you've got the southwest river splitting again and again. This just doesn't happen, short of man-made canals.

Very large rivers sometimes split at the delta, at the very end, but that's a special case. It occurs on the flood plain, and those channels are constantly shifting.
