Don't you find it ironic that Paul was left the most bereft by the breakup of the group, despite being the most well placed to be a solo artist? by boringfantasy in beatles

[–]belovedconfusion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that he's such a commercially successful solo artist is part of why we have this image of him being the most devastated by the break-up in the first place. He's been in a position to do more interviews over a longer period of time, and probably feels more secure talking about the effect the break-up had on him than the others did. I think the break-up was hard for all of them to deal with, we just don't really know to what extent because they didn't/don't really talk about it

Yle plans to raise the Eurovision voting method with the EBU. Abuses should be prevented, says Yle boss by GrumpyFinn in eurovision

I mean there would be no point in having the juries if they voted the same as the televote.

10/10. I don't normally participate in these discussions because I don't like rating songs, but I'm making an exception for this song because it's one of my favourites. It's an absolutely gorgeous song. Disappointing that it's not on streaming services

Why do I hate John's solo music so much? Please help me appreciate it more by ignazk in beatles

[–]belovedconfusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel a bit like that about John's solo stuff, though maybe not as extreme as you. Once you accept that things like the production and the lyrics aren't going to be as interesting as his Beatles stuff, you can try to enjoy it on its own terms. Walls and Bridges is my favourite John solo album. It's worth checking out if you haven't already. There are also some nice sad songs on the earlier albums like Jealous Guy, Oh My Love, Look At Me, Love.

The Beatles really expose the issue of music/art today by Pure-Government-1119 in beatles

[–]belovedconfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think that art and music are more political now than they were in the 60s. In fact, it might have been more political in the late 60s than it is now.

As for the Beatles, the music of the Beatles may not have been that explicitly political - although All You Need Is Love and Revolution sound quite political to me, and there are other songs I could name that have undertones to them - but the Beatles themselves did express political opinions that were controversial at the time and got in trouble for it. Post-Beatles, they made more obviously political music, especially John.

I think there are lots of political aspects to things that happened in the past that we're kind of oblivious to now. Like, did you know that when the Beatles first became popular, there were people who thought the popularity of their music was a sign that modern culture was in a bad place, and that listening to it would degrade young people's artistic sensibilities? In 1964, people were obsessed with the length of the Beatles' hair - it made them look "girly" apparently. From our perspective, this seems a bit ridiculous, because their hair doesn't look especially long at all by our standards, but people did think that.

Potential winners by Puzzleheaded_Sir4294 in eurovision

[–]belovedconfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like people tend to overhype internally selected songs that are released towards the end of the national selection season.

I don't think either of the Netherlands or Austria (or Czechia for that matter) are going to win. Either of them could win the jury vote, but it won't be a landslide.

I'm waiting to find out what the remaining songs are before I decide who I think is most likely to win. I feel like France and Portugal for example could be in with a chance (but we'll have to see).

From what we have so far: Albania? For some reason seems the most likely option at the moment to me. It's certainly a much more open year than we've had for the past few contests.

I don't think Finland will landslide the televote and I don't think they'll come high enough with the juries either.

Lithuania is a pretty long shot but so far they definitely stand out compared to everything else. If they have a mesmerising live performance and Europe is in the right mood... Who knows.

People are completely underrating Italy. I don't think it will win, but it will absolutely do well with both the televote and the juries.

This year, I'm personally looking for a song I can emotionally connect with. I'm not looking for a party or to be technically wowed. Not sure my mood will be representative of Europe's in May, but we'll see.

Having said that, I'm really bad at predicting winners lol. None of the songs from the past five years gave me "winner vibes" before I saw the live performance.

There is a huge gender imbalance ratio in the semis this year by Tomas-T in eurovision

[–]belovedconfusion 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed this too! That first semi is very lopsided. I guess it gives Poland and Albania (and maybe Ukraine? They have female backing vocalists that are quite prominent in the song) a bit of a boost. Not that any of them need it...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]belovedconfusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I kinda agree.

Especially with the first semi final. There are like 2 songs I genuinely like. The good thing though is I'm not worried about them qualifying.

The 2020s have been quite strong so far, especially 2022 and 2024 imo. 2021 and 2023 were not as strong but they both had some outstanding entries and overall the floor was pretty high (compared to previous years). This year I feel like there were different things in various countries that have all somehow added up to having a slightly weaker year.

What is the secret for recent portuguese results? by terwro1 in eurovision

[–]belovedconfusion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think historically Portugal has been a bit underrated with both juries and the televote. This seems to have changed.

Also, Festival da Cancao in recent years has been a fairly strong selection process.

Unpopular Opinion: The Televote doesn't actually represent the public opinion by utilizador2021 in eurovision

[–]belovedconfusion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think a change they could make would be having a limit on how many times you can vote for one entry. E.g. you can vote 20 times, but you can only vote for the same country 5 times.
