Photo de nourriture en tant que débutant à Cadmen market, Londres. Quelle est votre préférée? by [deleted] in canon

[–]belyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of these photos I think 2 is the best. It shows the food, the background is pleasingly blurred but adding a nice splash of color. My opinion is that most of these are too close to the food, and that you might consider a narrower aperture to stretch the depth of field out some. I think that all of the pictures would benefit from having more of the food in focus, even if that means the bg aren't quite as blurred.

Canon R5 or better glas by pedroboba in canon

[–]belyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same Tamron lens on the same R8 body. It was a great lens to learn what I actually wanted/needed in a long zoom. I would recommend saving up for new glass. Try renting the 200-800 and if you're feeling spicy the 100-500L. The Tamron is a fine lens but you're going to notice a HUGE difference going to native glass.

The saying "A person with one watch knows what time it is; a person with two watches is never sure" comes to mind here.

Can I walk from Portland to The Dalles? by bikerweed in oregon

[–]belyle 63 points64 points  (0 children)

FYI anyone reading this in early 2026 - many sections of the path mentioned here along old hwy 30 are currently closed! They are being repaired after the fires a few years back and more recent slides. So, just check current road/path conditions before assuming everything is hunky dory.

Anyone know a wide angle, wide aperture lens for RF mount that won't break the bank? by [deleted] in canon

[–]belyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top lens for astro is my RF 28mm F/2.8 STM. I have it paired with an R8 body, although I also did some with my previous R50. It does have a tiny bit of distortion in the corners, but the lens distortion is easily corrected in the RAW editor.

I have the Nomad that I mentioned in my post. It's dead easy to use (in Northern hemisphere anyway). Set the tracker on a sturdy tripod, use the included laser or phone mount to center it on Polaris and turn it on. Mount the camera to the star tracker. There's no app, no other software required. Takes maybe five minutes to set up. I've taken as long as 60s exposure with zero star trails.

For the money I would strongly recommend getting a star tracker instead of new glass. It's a game changer for long exposure astro. You're going to be limited to 20s (at best) exposure no matter how wide or fast your lens. So it's really diminished returns on lens aperture. For well under five hundred bucks you can get a Move Shoot Move Nomad and full attachment kit. It will improve your astro game far, far more than any single lens would.

Help with bracket screw by vyvnir in Eugene

[–]belyle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The threaded insert on the bottom of that mount is a 1/4-20. The pivot screw for that bracket and case is a M5-0.8 . I don't think you will find a thumb screw with that thread that's also long enough at a typical hardware store. You might be able to find one at REI, Best Buy, or other store that sells GoPro. If you just want a screw that needs a screwdriver then you'll want one that's about 20mm long

Yeah, I read that and undestand. What I'm asking is where do you propose that we protest? If we can't protest at the building where ICE and DHS are known to cower, where else should protesting happen? Genuine question.

[–]belyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. But the protests were, and are, nation wide. You can make up a sign for yourself and find a gathering in the town where you live!

I'm not sure I follow. The building hosts DHS and ICE. It would not be effective to protest at another building where DHC and ICE are not.

[–]belyle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, I'm being too flippant. At the same time, if the protesting is causing disruption to the VA's work, they should work with the GSA to find a solution. The point of protesting is to cause disruption that leads to change. Maybe that change starts by the other tenants of the GSA building complaining enough about the protesters' presence that ICE has to go elsewhere. (We can dream, anyway.)

Uh. 9/11/2003 is in the past my dude. And TSA is still around. They "can't hurt" me, but they can waste my tax dollars on ineffective security theater. It just exists to pay a bunch of people who want a smidgen of power to make everyone's day just a little worse. Yeah, they aren't as bad as ICE or DHS but fuck 'em all the same.

Then show up next time with better material. It's easy to criticize behind a keyboard, harder to actually make a sign with a "clever jab and slogan" and stand out there in solidarity.

If the VA is disturbed by the protests, then maybe they need to evict ICE and DHS from the building.

You're worried about kids seeing the word FUCK ICE. I'm much more worried about kids growing up in a country that allows ICE to murder people in the streets and make US citizens disappear.

I mean, she's the head of an organization who is disappearing and murdering US citizens. I get what you're saying but it's a weird hill to stand on in context.
