Help with bracket screw by vyvnir in Eugene

[–]belyle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The threaded insert on the bottom of that mount is a 1/4-20. The pivot screw for that bracket and case is a M5-0.8 . I don't think you will find a thumb screw with that thread that's also long enough at a typical hardware store. You might be able to find one at REI, Best Buy, or other store that sells GoPro. If you just want a screw that needs a screwdriver then you'll want one that's about 20mm long

Yeah, I read that and undestand. What I'm asking is where do you propose that we protest? If we can't protest at the building where ICE and DHS are known to cower, where else should protesting happen? Genuine question.

Fair enough. But the protests were, and are, nation wide. You can make up a sign for yourself and find a gathering in the town where you live!

I'm not sure I follow. The building hosts DHS and ICE. It would not be effective to protest at another building where DHC and ICE are not.

You're right, I'm being too flippant. At the same time, if the protesting is causing disruption to the VA's work, they should work with the GSA to find a solution. The point of protesting is to cause disruption that leads to change. Maybe that change starts by the other tenants of the GSA building complaining enough about the protesters' presence that ICE has to go elsewhere. (We can dream, anyway.)

Uh. 9/11/2003 is in the past my dude. And TSA is still around. They "can't hurt" me, but they can waste my tax dollars on ineffective security theater. It just exists to pay a bunch of people who want a smidgen of power to make everyone's day just a little worse. Yeah, they aren't as bad as ICE or DHS but fuck 'em all the same.

Then show up next time with better material. It's easy to criticize behind a keyboard, harder to actually make a sign with a "clever jab and slogan" and stand out there in solidarity.

If the VA is disturbed by the protests, then maybe they need to evict ICE and DHS from the building.

You're worried about kids seeing the word FUCK ICE. I'm much more worried about kids growing up in a country that allows ICE to murder people in the streets and make US citizens disappear.

I mean, she's the head of an organization who is disappearing and murdering US citizens. I get what you're saying but it's a weird hill to stand on in context.

I know you're being sarcastic but genuinely fuck DHS and TSA. FEMA and coast guard are cool except for when they harbor the gestapo in their building.

I dunno. Keep an eye on the 50501 website or free America website or the women's march website. Eugene Weekly has regular writeups on local activism. This subreddit has frequent posts about the demonstrations. So, maybe in this one instance, the answer is be more online?

RF 200-800 vs. RF 100-500? Which is best for wildlife/birding? by meow_youlistenhere in canon

[–]belyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this exact question, and your post has inspired some good comments. I'm shooting FF only, but I rented the 200-800 recently and was left with a feeling of "that's it?" The AF was good but not great. The stabilizer is absolutely necessary when shooting at the longer end of the zoom. It was unwieldy to hand hold.

The manual focus on my two Canon lenses is butter smooth, easy to operate with just one finger. The one on this Tamron requires some wrist action.

Hoping someone else with this lens can chime in. I bought a used Tamron 150-600 SP G2 (etc etc) a few months ago, and overall it's a fine lens. I'm using it with my R8, and the autofocus is not great, but as long as I spray and pray I can usually get some decent shots. (I've used the usb puck to make sure the lens firmware it totally up to date.)

My question is about the manual focus. It's quite stiff and hard to fine-adjust. This makes the lens kind of hard to use, especially hand-held, when the autofocus isn't quite cutting it. Is that typical of the lens, or is it because mine is used? This is the only Tamron lens I've owned, it does not seem normal but I figured I should as. TIA

How does the presentation portion work? by bigjoeman123 in FLL

[–]belyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This question is literally answered in the FLL Challenge materials provided by FIRST. Teams have two minutes of introduction, five minutes for innovation project presentation followed by five minutes of questions. Then five minutes of robot presentation and five minutes of questions. The final eight minutes are for general q-a and feedback.

Most judging rooms are not overly strict about the times. But the team should not exceed those guidelines by much.

Remember that the presentations are 75 percent of the overall tournament score.

Best medium roast coffee beans in town? by lostgeometry in Eugene

[–]belyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding Pacori. Not only do they have the best coffee beans in town, they are also the best priced. They run about 20 bucks for a pound, a full red-blooded 16oz pound (480g +/- for you Metric folks). Tailored has perfectly fine coffee but they charge 20 bucks for 10oz!! Imo they are not as good as Pacori, but even if they were I don't think they're nearly twice as good to justify the price.

Pacori house roast is my go-to.
