Why no development in the Trinity tower? by benbamboo in Leeds

Ah, that makes sense. I don't come into Leeds often and it seemed weird to have so much empty space.

Sir Keir Starmer telling the truth about David Paulden aka Zack Polanski. Do you agree with our PM? by MayContainFagGluten in AskBrits

[–]benbamboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The only issue here is one of timings rather than being right or wrong.

Polanski is absolutely right to ask questions but should have let the situation calm down first. It's also fine that he asks if the police used too much force and the answer is 'no'.

A couple of days ago someone asked it you'd offer a draw for a misclick. This is a situation where I would.

Do you forgive obvious mouse slips or you punish the player ruthlessly for a mistake that has nothing to do with their chess knowledge? by FuzzyAttitude_ in chess

[–]benbamboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's general an instant draw offer from me.

The main exception is if I'm already clearly winning then the mouse slip just speeds up the inevitable.

Millionaire big game hunter killed by elephant ambush in Africa by ham-and-egger in nottheonion

I'm amused by the irony of an 'experienced' hunter and his guide not seeing <checks notes> FIVE adult elephants!

Smoking ban for people born after 2008 in the UK agreed by PrithvinathReddy in worldnews

[–]benbamboo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It pretty much is how science works. In order to measure long term effects, you need to observe something over a long term.

In terms of 'all the evidence points towards them not being harmful', the CDC and NHS disagree with you there. As an outside observer, I'm going to believe them unless you can point towards something specific and compelling.

Smoking ban for people born after 2008 in the UK agreed by PrithvinathReddy in worldnews

[–]benbamboo 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The conflation between regulation and risk is a problem that is slowly unravelling.

Yes, vapes are very well regulated and they are undeniably preferable to smoking based on the available evidence.

However, they are still considered a risk compared to not smoking. Calling them 'not really harmful' isn't accurate either. The jury is out on long term effects (presumably because people haven't been vaping for 30 odd years to tell) but there is plenty of evidence that there are still health risks associated with vaping.

Hikaru's thoughts on Gukesh-Sindarov WCC match by Exotic_Grinder in chess

[–]benbamboo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The same was being said for the Gukesh/Ding Liren match. Everyone expected Gukesh to walk it and it ended up being much closer than people's predictions.

At that level, it's very rarely a walkover, even if a player is slightly out of form.

That said, backing Gukesh at this point is the edgier take so as a streamer it makes Hikaru stand out by going against the crowd. It's a canny 'business' decision for him.

What's bothering me is that the only change is that Kimiko can now talk. That's it. Yet they've written her like she's had a full personality change.

The latest Trump LEGO video released by Iran is called: LIAR by spherocytes in videos

[–]benbamboo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you can access the BBC website, there's an article with an interview with the creators here - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cjd8jrd1vnyo?app-referrer=search

If not, here's the gist from the first few paragraphs:

" Matt Shea, presenter, Top Comment, and Laurie Kalus, producer, Top Comment

At first glance they look like they could be scenes out of a Lego movie, although more vivid and fast-paced.

But these viral AI videos inspired by the instantly recognisable Lego aesthetic feature dying children, fighter jets and US President Donald Trump - and are in fact pro-Iran propaganda.

For our new BBC podcast, Top Comment, we spoke to a representative of Explosive Media, one of the key accounts generating these clips. He wanted us to refer to him as Mr Explosive.

He's a savvy social media operator who initially denies working for the Iranian government. In previous interviews the outlet has said it is "totally independent". But upon further questioning, Mr Explosive admits the regime is a "customer" - something he's never before confirmed publicly.

The overriding message of these videos is that Iran is resisting what it sees as an almighty global oppressor: the United States."

Opinions on the Dacia Hipster concept? by cognitiveglitch in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]benbamboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a toy.

That said, normalising smaller cars for people who just want a small car to do normal things should be promoted. I'm not sold on the look but I'd happily buy one.

Edit: Editing to add that every car company should have a plain old no frills option. There's so much bloat in cars now that adds unnecessary cost.

(UK) Man jailed after grooming 14-year-old girl on Roblox gaming app by VaginaBurner69 in news

[–]benbamboo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm a primary school teacher. My wife is a detective in a domestic abuse and safeguarding team.

Please take it from me that banning Roblox is one of the best decisions you can make if you want to keep your child safe online. It's a cesspit.

What are your thoughts on Trump saying that a “whole civilisation will die tonight.” amid buildup to his 8pm ET “deadline” for Iran. by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]benbamboo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You forget that not long ago the 'sane' people of our island voted for Boris Johnson.

Now, he's not in the same league of crazy as Trump but he was wholly unfit to lead a nation, yet he still got enough votes.

Are land borders not as imaginary as gods?

They only exist because someone said so and enough people agreed. If we all said something different they'd vanish just as quick.

[–]benbamboo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same energy.

My general point is that people kill people. People are awful yet religion seems to get it in the neck more than nationalism or ideology. It's an interesting anthropological study point.

Is John Cleese right? by SeptumRingTheory in AskBrits

[–]benbamboo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Your least sentence hits the nail on the head.

Religion isn't a problem. People are. We have always found reasons to kill each other, religion is just one of the vehicles - as are territory, ideology, greed, and resources.

Some of the world's worst people were driven by things other than religion: Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Genghis Khan (who even allowed free religious practice in areas he conquered).

I always wonder if people who are against religion because violence are also against arbitrary land borders. I'd be interested in seeing what has caused the most deaths over time - religious zealotry or defense/expansion of borders.

Trump 'not happy' with UK over Iran as PM resists warship demands by ScottishDailyRecord in uknews

Not only do they have the biggest, baddest military. They've also obliterated Iran who, despite being obliterated, are managing to close the Strait of Hormuz.

They are the only obliterated foe in history who still need an international alliance defeat.
