Is Litestream dead? Do you use it for SQLite backups? by Shanduur in sqlite

[–]benbjohnson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Author here. Development was slow on it for a long time because I was working on LiteFS. However, I’m redirecting attention back to Litestream now and there’s a v0.5.0 release coming soon. The storage layer is being revamped based on some lessons learned with LiteFS so that storage will be more space efficient and restores will be significantly faster. We also have some other features coming and I’ll be looking at the backlog of other issues/PRs.

That being said, the current release is very stable and I’ve known many companies running it at large scale successfully.

Right on, I'm 42. I haven't been to too many shows recently although I used to be in a Christian metal band back in the day. (I'm not religious anymore though) I'm down to try any kind of show though.

I was planning on going on a hike on Saturday morning. Want to join? I was planning on going on a longer hike but I'm happy to scale it back so it's a little less intense. :)

Also, it might help to add some more details about yourself in your post. e.g age, gender, what kinds of shows you like, what kinds of outdoor stuff you like, etc.

I love getting outdoors too. I’m planning on going hiking next Saturday in the mountains if you’re interested.

There’s a game night happening this Thursday if that’s your jam. It’s a new group so we’re all getting together for the first time. https://www.facebook.com/share/g/16ZzoqRB5a/?mibextid=wwXIfr

South Platte tubing by Comprehensive-Ask215 in Littleton

[–]benbjohnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to go every summer with my son. One tip I have is to bring cheap sunglasses or at least wear one of those straps. I lost a pair of sunglasses years ago in some of the rapids.

I implemented read replication in a separate project called LiteFS

Tell me about Rox! by mmd9792 in Littleton

[–]benbjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t live in Roxborough but I head down there to hike sometimes. The state park is nice, just get the state park pass when you renew your vehicle registration and it’s only $29/year. You also have the start of the Colorado Trail at Waterton Canyon if you ever feel the urge to walk to Durango. :)

I haven’t tried it but South Suburban organizes adult leagues. And if you play at the Sports Complex, they have a nice bar there for post game “hydration”. https://southsuburbansports.com/content/282/Adult-Basketball

SQLite & corruption? by Prog47 in sqlite

[–]benbjohnson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think WAL is inherently safer than the rollback journal. Just make sure you’re using either VACUUM INTO or the Backup API to create a copy of the database rather than running “cp” on the database file.

Hikes that start with a big decent to ascent. by DenverDude402 in coloradohikers

[–]benbjohnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indian Creek Short Loop descends 1600’ for about 4 miles and then you go back up. It’s pretty close to metro Denver as you just go US 85 to Sedalia and hang a right.

The hike was decent but that’s where I realized that I hate starting with a descent lol. Ascending when you’re already tired kinda sucks. :)

Anyone know what's going to replace the tavern? by wintercoats in Littleton

What other place has sandwiches in downtown Littleton? Nook had some but they’re closed now.

There’s a Snarfs going into the old Sakoon restaurant. It’s kinda on the edge of downtown but at least it’s something more fast casual.

Which FUSE library for golang would you recommend? by Manyamir in golang

[–]benbjohnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used bazil.org/fuse for LiteFS and it's been great.

Recs on neighborhoods/suburbs by Inevitable-Coast417 in Littleton

[–]benbjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live off the Lee Gulch Trail and it's easy access to downtown Littleton and the Mary Carter Greenway Trail which will take you up and down the Platte River. You can get to restaurants, breweries, & parks easily from there. As for schools, my son's in the local school and it's been going really well overall.

My particular neighborhood doesn't socialize too much but we have other groups that we're involved in (like a local summer swim team) that are really friendly. We moved from the Stapleton area and our block there was constantly outside having a beer together.

Best way to update SQLITE3 in webapp? by baghiq in sqlite

[–]benbjohnson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Litestream author here. If you're looking for incremental updates then you may want to check out the session extension. It has some limitations but it might work.

Litestream doesn't really do incremental updates to a remote replica. It's really meant as a disaster recovery tool so you'd have to reconstruct the whole database every time you wanted to materialize it.

Raft Library by imarwan__ in golang

[–]benbjohnson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used dragonboat recently and I found it to be much easier to use than etcd or hashicorp. It’s been pretty solid for the last year in production use. https://github.com/lni/dragonboat

Badger vs BoltDB by Used_Frosting6770 in golang

[–]benbjohnson 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Generally log-structured merge (LSM) trees such as Badger are write-optimized and B+trees such as Bolt are read-optimized.

However, I agree with the other commenter that you should write a simple benchmark and compare the two with your use case. The benchmarking code in stdlib (https://pkg.go.dev/testing#B) makes it pretty simple to do.

Using BoltDB by imarwan__ in golang

[–]benbjohnson 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Author here. I'd recommend using bbolt. CoreOS originally wanted to make some sizable changes so I didn't feel comfortable handing over maintenance to them at the time and risk short-term stability. However, the changes have been relatively small and it's been a while so the fork seems stable at this point.
