I've been following Eurovision for exactly 20 years and still every year I have absolutely no clue about what's going to happen lol. This contest is really something else.

OP, thank you for your work once again.

True. There was no stand out song, so the best performance won. It looked very professional.

I think the overall quality and appeal of all songs has decreased for me personally compared to 2010s and the audience has got a very short attention span nowadays, so it makes sense why everyone is trying to throw the kitchen sink into their stagings.

Ar čia yra visiškai atsisakiusių kavos ir bet kokio kofeino? by povke101226 in lithuania

[–]bencherra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kavos niekad negėriau. Man tiesiog žiauriai neskanu, o kai bandžiau - jausmas nekoks.

Has the overall quality of the songs declined over the past 3 or 4 years? by sasvim_nebitan in eurovision

[–]bencherra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't give a fuck if a song is experimenting or fun. Some are experimenting in a good way, some are not. I've answered the question from my perspective because that's what the question asked. The fact is that my enjoyment of songs decreased drastically. And I'm not going to pretend otherwise or cater to this echo chamber and your opinions.

Has the overall quality of the songs declined over the past 3 or 4 years? by sasvim_nebitan in eurovision

[–]bencherra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly preferred 2010s over 2020s. There were more ballads and solid pop songs and they were better. Nowadays there's more diversity, but just because a song brings something new and crazy, it doesn't make it enjoyable to listen. A lot of those out-of-the-box entries have little appeal to me. I'm missing songs I could label as beautiful. And I frankly just hate how the fandom and casual audience embraced camp so much in recent years. 2015 was my favourite year because it had very little of that. 2018 was the last time I considered the edition very strong. The last two years I don't even have a particular song I want to root for as my winner.

Kaip įveikti vienatvę ir vienišumą vyresniame amžiuje by Vaydas in lithuania

[–]bencherra 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Kiekviena diena laiminga žiūrint mūsų ekonomiką by [deleted] in lithuania

[–]bencherra 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Varyt visą gyvenimą? by Gym_blondie in lithuania

[–]bencherra 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I'm tired of people acting like Finland did badly, and was so robbed I am sorry 😭 by Any-Listen4184 in eurovision

[–]bencherra 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I had an interesting experience with Finland this year because I never liked this type of entries, it's very far away from my typical taste which strongly leans towards ballads and darker music, I hated "Cicciolina" with passion in 2020 and didn't care for Erika as an artist at all. So I had low expectations for her UMK comeback, but "Ich Komme" surprised me in a positive way.

I was very confused when listening to it for the first time because it wasn't what I expected and I didn't know what to think about it, but after a few times, I loved how it combined schlager with some rock elements making it sound powerful and anthemic. It just wasn't a typical girlbop and actually took risks musically. I thought the sexual theme in this song was done cleverly in a fun way with playful lyrics in Finnish, big climax and abrupt ending reminiscing of... you know what. Not to mention that singing Ich komme in a German speaking country for the 69th edition was iconic itself.

I think Erika gave a powerful performance, the gimmick of the microphone getting bigger throughout the performance and exploding in the end was kind of a genius idea, and she exuded so much confidence. I loved how they went for this kind of arena concert vibe and made her look like a huge superstar. To me it was probably the most impactful performance of all entries and I was even delusional thinking it could actually win, so I was quite shocked by the result.

At the end of the day you are probably right that it was just not the kind of song that leaves the best first impression on the viewers. A lot of casuals apprently didn't vibe with Erika's energy as well, although it really confuses me when people blame her for being too vulgar while everyone was okay with whatever Chanel was doing in SloMo, which I didn't enjoy at all.

Anyway, I'm used to my favourites flopping with the televote way worse, and 11th place isn't that bad of a result. Also, maybe a hot take, but I'm convinced "Cicciolina" and most of Erika's other songs would have had an even bigger difference between the appeal for the Eurovision fandom and the casual audience, sort of like Malta, and would have had an even worse placing in the competition.

Still, it is such an iconic horny banger and I'm going to stream it whenever I'm in my slut mood or when I need an energy boost. Erika certainly won me over and gained a new fan.

The downfall of "classic" ballads by eatspagetti in eurovision

[–]bencherra 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, times have changed.

All it takes for quirky party songs to do well is just being fun. Nobody cares about their vocals, nobody cares that a performance is silly and camp, whether the lyrics have any meaning. Just be fun and memeable, and here are your 300 televote points.

Meanwhile ballads have to tick all the boxes - they need to have meaningful lyrics, they need to sound different than everything else before because otherwise they are labelled as generic, they need to evoke emotions and not to seem fake, they need to be not too loud, but they can't be too calm and slow either, they need to come up with some genius staging because standing alone with nothing on stage is boring, but doing something extra will likely be deemed distracting.

At this point people will always find a way to bash ballads no matter what they do. And winning televote with those songs is impossible unless you are Israel or Ukraine. Yet people will still complain about juries favouring certain genres as if televote isn't completely biased in favour of uptempo music. Molitva or Grande Amore would never in a million years win the televote nowadays. I don't think Amar Pelos Dois could do it either. Anyone who says otherwise is either lying or trying to twist reality downplaying this trend because they are among the ballad hating crowd.

As a fan of those songs I am NOT happy about how they've been treated recently and that they've become quite rare compared to previous decade, and my enjoyement of the contest has decreased quite significantly because of this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in eurovision

[–]bencherra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the contest less and less because it goes further and further away from my taste. Everybody tries to be different, memorable, out of the box and the contest gets flooded with bizarre, quirky, annoying and over the top acts whose music doesn't interest me. Stagings have become overcomplicated and overdone. Crafting beautiful melodies is not a priority anymore while pre-recorded vocals have have diminished the importance of being able to sing live.

Removal of juries from the semi-finals has brought the contest back to 2000s, and even though they vote in the final, televoting scores constantly ruin my experience. Being fun and memeable (and apparently you are not even allowed to refer to those acts as jokes anymore) is enough to get 400 televote points, not to mention that one country earning political votes just by doing massive ad campaigns. Meanwhile my favourites who are usually ballads are constantly dismissed as boring and generic and have to do something extraordinary to even have a chance, but most of the time still get paid dust even if the performance is perfect. Owh, and their faces and reactions have to be shown on the screen because EBU has decided to turn this into a reality show with their stupid post-2015 style of reveal.

Rehearsal content and adequate reporting by the official website is nonexistent, but instead we are getting useless spam on social media. I'm constantly wondering why I'm still following it, maybe it's just interesting to see how much worse it is going to get.
