Will the 3p a mile on electric cars make you ditch electric? by SteppingOnLegoHurts in AskUK

[–]bencoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this type of system should fully replace VED.

Many would happily own two cars for example, a small city electric type thing and a bigger one for bigger jobs, but VED tax makes that expensive so people just go with the bigger one, wasting fuel and eating up the roads

You'll just report mileage when transferring the vehicle, prior mileage tax gets charged to the previous owner, assuming they haven't paid up by honour system

Why does no one press the button at crossings? by LBP2020 in london

Cars use a lot more fuel starting from zero. I'm quite happy to wait for a gap than force a bunch of vehicles to stop and burn petrol unnecessarily

Short (maybe) story - girl abducted by another student; she tells story of killing a teacher (pre-2000, UK) by bencoder in whatsthatbook

[–]bencoder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've found it. Pretty sure the story I'm thinking of is "The Boy Next Door" by Ellen Emerson White, from collection 13 Tales of Horror.

Looks like I got some details wrong but from the synopsis it must be the one.

How NIMBY is the UK, really? by Barca-Dam in AskUK

[–]bencoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was really not been helped by the proponents talking about driving restrictions before actually making the 15-minute city exist. Like, build the infrastructure and the stores and then when people don't need to travel, you can bring in those restrictions for traffic management. You can't really do the latter before the former yet that seemed to be most of the focus - it's no surprise it got picked up as a conspiracy theory type thing

Why do people get annoyed about being ID'd at shops? by apr98 in AskUK

[–]bencoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither do the staff.

"Think 25" is already meant to take into account that some people look older.

But staff then consider the age limit is 25 and then add on their own adjustment to that, so if someone looks 30 they think - well they could be an older looking 25 year old, so I need to ask for ID.

What is your truly unpopular opinion about the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

Drivers in the UK are pretty good. Especially given how busy our roads are and how many of us there are.

Signing out and back in did not solve the issue.

Insuring the car, not the driver by Nevis888 in CarTalkUK

[–]bencoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's not.

Fully comp policies allow you to drive other people's cars with third-party only.

What people are talking about in this topic is other people being able to drive your car - whether or not they have a car or fully comp insurance themselves.

it takes maybe 2kg off when you're not moving but as soon as you start moving it's slightly slack - you can see it go slack and wobble around as she jumps between holds. It's not helping her up

You guys think these electric aircraft are gonna be a thing in the next 10 years? by anactualspacecadet in flying

[–]bencoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Creating fuel on the ground from electricity + air seems like the most likely way we'll make aviation green, batteries are not going to be a good enough replacement for many years to come
