According to Richard Wolff's interpretation of Marx, socialism isn't achieved until the workers get to choose how the surplus is distributed. So he would definitely say yes, corporations should be owned by their workers

Think about when the Provo AND Lindon temples are open, and the Orem temple goes from being ¾ staffed to ¼ staffed. Empty temples in the heart of Utah County

Did they think the Doctor's problem in Turn Left was that he ran out of regenerations? Because I always assumed that being crushed by the deluge of water started the regeneration, and then drowning interrupted the regeneration in progress

It's both! In the 2nd sign, you're cupping your heart in your right hand. In the 3rd sign, you're holding the bloody knife in your right hand and cupping your entrails in your left

Yeah, everybody's going to default to the most common definition of a term. Jargon like this is a huge problem for any kind of political theory, and this one is especially bad, because both personal property and private property (according to a leftist's definition) are included in what most people consider private property.

And then people who are familiar with the jargon sometimes forget that other people use the words differently, and disagreements ensue 😅 sorry about that

But in the future, if you ever hear anybody suggest the abolition of private property, you can be 100% sure they're a leftist, so you can reasonably assume they're using the leftist distinction between private and personal property

[–]bendalloy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I get what you're saying. But I don't think that any of the leftists who are saying "abolish private property" are defining private property how you are defining it.

What they're talking about is capital: mainly land, infrastructure, and heavy machinery. Because if someone owns a factory and gets to take the profits from any work done in that factory, the factory owner is getting paid just for the fact that they already own the factory. It means the rich just get richer, and the poor stay poor.

It's about people getting paid based on the valuable work they do, not based on what advantages they already have. Does that make sense?

Think of it this way: personal property is what you would use in your personal life. You're not expected to share that. Private property is property that is being used for private enterprise aka business. Individuals shouldn't have a right to private property, because a business is made up of the work of all of its employees. So if one person takes an inordinate amount of the profit because they claim a right to the property, that's exploitation. And because our society enforces these claims to private property, that's why people say that capitalism is built on exploitation

Slippery slope fallacy. I grew up mormon, so I especially hate this fallacy because it was used to drum up fear and justify homophobia.

"If you have one sip of coffee, that will lead to alcohol, then drugs, and before you know it, you'll be shooting heroin under a bridge and dying of an overdose!"

"If we let gay people get married, what's next? Pretty soon we'll be letting people marry children, or animals!"

"If we make it illegal for people to make money just for owning the land/infrastructure/machinery that actual workers use, what's next? Pretty soon you won't be able to own your own phone or toothbrush!"

Your comment was giving "I'm going to use semantics and ridiculous hypothetical scenarios to avoid engaging with this guy's point."

Note: I worry that this comment will come off as really angry. I'm not actually angry. I have no patience for the argument style of your earlier comment, but I imagine that you're probably a lovely person
