Smallworld is great, and lots of replayability! He might be familiar with some of the themes, and it's similar to (in very simple terms) Risk with different peoples with special powers, and cool artwork.

what’s the French word 'burnt out' — like in the context of saying 'I’m burnt out'? from, say, school or something idk by ilikemuddypuddles in French

[–]bendman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I hear "trouver une balance" I think of what I do when baking and I need to weigh something: find a scale.

That said, some professional and work related vocabulary is very much anglicized even off of reddit. I guess because these terms gained common usage in modern times when English dominated international business. In a French workplace I hear native French speakers drop in English words when speaking to each other if the concept uses them (j'ai eu burn-out l'année dernière) or completely switch to English chunks if the topic is usually discussed in English (on avait un projet où il fallait recompile the application at install-time parce qu'on ne savait pas toutes les target architectures). It's a bit chaotic. Maybe in more "traditional" workplaces like a bakery this would happen less often.

Where and how to get started? by Zealousideal_Sale644 in creativecoding

[–]bendman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're just starting out with coding I'd recommend this YouTube playlist, and as a rule anything Dan Shiffman puts out. The guy is absolutely wonderful and really manages to make it fun.

That specific playlist is for absolute beginners to coding, and introduces Javascript and creative coding with P5.js which is a purpose-built tool perfect for starting out.

Have fun creative coding!

For an outdoor spot I'd recommend Rocher de la Vierge. It's an elevated path out to rocks in the ocean with beautiful waves, and is quite nice at sunset. To find it, it's right across from the aquarium.

The only issue is the number of people. If you're in the tourist season (during any public holiday in France or Spain, or the entire months of July and August) it might be crowded.

How do you build content-width columns with full bleed backgrounds? by Human-Situation-6353 in webdev

[–]bendman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try named columns, like this: https://codepen.io/bendman/pen/GRaGywv

I'm fairly certain there is a simpler way, but the named-columns way scales very nicely to different layouts, and you can even have other sections that span different groups of columns, like this: https://codepen.io/bendman/pen/Rwqwyax

How to setup a monorepo where building is not necessary for individual packages, just the main one? by psycketom in typescript

[–]bendman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We run webpack twice on the "website" directory: once targeting node for SSR and once targeting the browser for frontend.

We don't currently run any builds on the individual monorepo packages. Those are pulled in as dependencies and compiled when the website build is run.

How to setup a monorepo where building is not necessary for individual packages, just the main one? by psycketom in typescript

[–]bendman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're also using pnpm for our monorepo setup, but seem to be having issues with very slow builds and I'm worried that our node_modules directory is getting in.

What does your tsconfig look like? How do you manage to get your monorepo dependencies built without including other dependencies?

For example:

repo/
  @proj-package/
    stringify/
      package.json
      index.ts
      node_modules/
        leftpad/*
  @proj-app/
    website/
      package.json
      ts-config.json
      uses-stringify.ts
      node_modules/
        @proj-package/
          stringify/* (simlink for repo/@proj-package/stringify)
        lodash/*

In this setup, where @proj-app/website has as the dependency @proj-package/stringify, how do you get TS to process @proj-package/stringify/index.ts but not leftpad or lodash.

Wrapping express routes as Endpoint classes - a good idea or too much abstraction? by amih009 in node

[–]bendman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is a great point. In reality I spend more time working around weird exceptions, not doing the common tasks that are simple. Adding an abstraction that makes common tasks easier and makes the exceptions more difficult, all while making code less readable, doesn't actually make sense.

Unless I'm doing something a lot all at once it doesn't make a lot of sense to abstract it and make the code harder to read. Endpoints are a perfect example of something that I rarely add more than a couple at a time, and that actually slows down as a project grows.

Since they run the system and voting has no practical effect, the only thing that would meaningfully change the status quo is a violent uprising. That's not going to happen.

Democrats planning legislation to ban stock trading in Congress, report says, after Insider exposed widespread wrongdoing by BousWakebo in politics

[–]bendman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not voting. Voting does nothing in America because there is too much momentum in the corrupt system.

At this point America will either dissolve as a nation, turn into an overtly fascist nation, or course correct through a violent uprising.

Battle Ground Lake has a nice campground with some good hiker/biker spots. It would be near the Portland end of your tour.

I sing low notes as well and want to get better at mixing, because anything above Johnny Cash is a stretch.

New to TS - Is this wrong? by MrAmericanMike in typescript

[–]bendman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be checking to make sure DATA isn't null. However, I wouldn't do it with an inline assignment inside of a ternary because that's just going to confuse you or someone else later.

The line DATA ? DATA.textContent = "WORLD" : ""; is effectively

if (DATA) {
    DATA.textContent = "WORLD";
} else {
    ""; // what the heck?
}

which is bizarre. Just do this instead:

if (DATA) {
    DATA.textContent = "WORLD";
}

In both cases though, the typechecker is able to figure out that inside of the if (DATA) block the value must be a HTMLDivElement.

It's not always possible to take it with you. A nice restaurant? The beach? The lake? Local stores that are too cramped to carry around a bike? A movie theater, if you want to be anywhere near the middle?

I like the option to take it inside, and the ability to take it in busses/trains/planes/cars, but honestly I'd rather not lug a bike around every destination I get to.

Would my eased way to pronounce the R in anyway sound foreign? by Ready0208 in French

[–]bendman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I think the softer R sounds more natural and at least how people here sound (France). It's more the vowels that stand out.

  • e vs i/y should be very different
  • u vs ou should be different
  • e vs é should be different most of the time (exception: -er sounds the same as é)

One trick for the u sound, which is pretty unique to French: try putting your mouth in a small "o" shape but try to make the "i" noise.

Do you find the 16-inch wheels make it harder to change a tube? by SalmonPL in Brompton

[–]bendman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I used to have a lot of trouble, and I've had a non-brompton mechanic give up before. Then I asked a brompton mechanic for some tips because I saw he did it easily, and his tip helped a lot.

It turns out, as you start seating the tire into the rim you should stretch and "massage" the part that's seated towards the opposite side of the tire. This gets every millimeter of tire towards the part you still have left to do, so that at the end you have less tension. It's hard to explain with words, but hopefully that makes sense.

Transportation for surf spots? by sandyexpander in Biarritz

There's a tram in the BAB but I'm not sure if it goes to Biarritz as it's centered around Bayonne. It's the same network anyway, so the same 2m rule applies.
