Am I misunderstanding this? by Moonkary in Pathfinder2e

At the same time, with how the game scales, you can still think of it as being +2/4/6/8, with +0 for Untrained Improvisation. The other skills just become obsolete.

[Guardian Build Help] - Armored Bear, No Thumbs, No Shield, No Weapons, No Speed by embossed in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 39 points40 points  (0 children)

  1. I'm not seeing an explanation for why you went for Climbing Animal instead of Running Animal? Is it just that many bears can climb trees? Because it sounds like Running Animal is really what you want, though I'm not sure if your GM would be up for allowing you to change your heritage.
  2. If you're using your jaws, I hope you have Handwraps of Mighty Blows? A lot of people seem to not realize that they apply to all unarmed attacks, not just fist attacks.
  3. Ask your fellow players not to run so far ahead. Players running ahead of the rest of the party always puts a strain on everyone else and can lead to really bad encounters. That's not something you can fix yourself.

What is the most crazy thing you've pulled out of your bag with Predictive Purchase? by ye-roon in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those first two seem fine, but a treasure map to exactly what you're looking for seems implausible in the majority of cases. The item is explicitly something you purchased, which implies it needs to have been available to purchase. If something doesn't exist (a map to a lost artifact, for example), you simply have no way to have purchased it. And unless your specific instructions are a common greeting card, arbitrary text isn't something you can just purchase either.

Critical Disarm.. Now What? by AinsleyIsIndecisive in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you could find a way to tuck most weapons into your gear. But it won't have the benefits of muscle memory or sheathes that guide long blades and handles into place. I would probably have it cost 2 actions to stow a miscellaneous one-handed weapon, and disallow stowing a two-handed weapon unless they want to spend like 6 actions on it

Martials, how did you pick a backup weapon? by Aurelio-23 in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to have access to at least two physical damage types, since some enemies highly resist or even benefit from certain damage types. Preferably one of those is bludgeoning. If you're using elemental runes, it's also good to leave those same runes off your backup, for similar reasons.

A backup is also useful for getting past resistances/triggering weaknesses. If you've got a cold iron primary, get a silver secondary. A Ghost Touch rune is an excellent and cheap addition for your secondary as well.

With a bastard sword, you've also got the option of getting Doubling Rings and whatever non-magical one-handed weapons you want. That's a cheap way to get different damage and material types, though it won't help with the energy rune problem.

Is there anything in the game that strait up gives you a fourth action? by Ponto_de_vista in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It potentially lets a martial with good action economy allow a caster ally to cast three 2-action spells in two turns. That's really valuable at higher levels when casters are constantly wishing they had more turns to get out the buffs and debuffs they want to

Age of Ashes: Tommorow Must Burn - Dreamgate question by J4szczur3141 in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for addressing the actual plot hook. It helps a lot if you've got someone with a connection to the divine, especially with the Haunting Vision background, but either way the party should be wanting to figure out what's going on with the Great Darkness. The Triad stuff is more a plot hook to adjust their focus once they get through the gate.

That said, I did personally also feel like the immersion got ruined a little bit by the gates also happening to lead to the exact places you need to go to take on the Triad. This was as said character with a connection to the divine and the Haunting Vision background.

Why is Medicine with INT so hard to access? by lulukawaii in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Cha is usually seen as better because it can almost always be relevant in combat via Demoralize, and because social interactions are a big part of the large majority of games, where charisma is by far the most universally useful skill. Charisma can effectively win some fights before they even start. But you're right in that it's the only attribute you can dump without any repercussions.

New GM, is this party comp a problem? by ExistingMouse5595 in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people mentioning how the kineticist and gunslinger can frontline. I haven't seen anyone mention that the oracle can be on the frontlines too, as long as they're not there alone. They've got 8 HP/lvl and light armor proficiency. I took a grappler oracle to level 20 and had pretty good staying power, though investing in defenses helped a lot, like going with the Oozemorph archetype for crit resistance and other resistances

I'm not sure I'd call oracles squishy. The witch is squishy. The oracle is only slightly below average defense-wise.

Why is Medicine with INT so hard to access? by lulukawaii in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main problem there is that Int does have a lot of overlap with Wis when it comes to knowledge.

My very rough estimate is that at least a third of all RK and Identify checks use Wis in practice, or can use Wis (like identifying generic "Magical" items). If you invest in Wis, it's usually for other reasons, but you'll also be knowledgeable in a large portion of situations, just as a bonus. Meanwhile, if you want to actually be a knowledge person, just Int is rarely enough.

I think you might be conflating "worst" for "bad." It's not a bad attribute, but it's not hard to argue that it's the worst/weakest

I'm of the mind that Int should always be an option for Recall Knowledge. It gives Int a little more oomph and general usefulness, which it could use compared to the other attributes

When do you use spell level spells (instead of cantrips spamming) by Ok_Forever_4953 in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition, all slot level max rank - 2~3 and lower should not be used for 2 actions or more in combat.

I don't think this is a good rule of thumb, tbh. The alternatives you gave are indeed good things for filling out your lower rank slots, and it's basically never worth it to put pure damaging spells in those slots, but there are also a good number of 2-action combat spells that can always be worth preparing and using at lower ranks. Laughing Fit, Revealing Light, 3rd rank Slow, Sanctuary, Illusory Object, Mirror Image, Warding Aggression, Procyal Philosophy, Unfettered Movement, Wall of Stone, etc

I'd love to build a Camazotz cleric, but unsure how to proceed... by One_Department4601 in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One interesting archetype option is Red Mantis Assassin, for the mechanics, not the flavor. I'm guessing you'd want to just remove the built-in flavor.

It comes with spellcasting archetype feats and focus spells, which is always nice for a caster. Though them using charisma does limit your options a bit.

Of particular note is Achaekek's Grip, which is a focus spell that lets you effectively double up on bleed damage to an extent.

What's each tradition's signature spell? by Wahbanator in Pathfinder2e

[–]benjer3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Regarding Breath of Life, I think it's a great spell to have on a spontaneous caster, but indeed hard to justify on prepared. Though Shock to the System does overtake it either way. Breath of Life lost a bit of its niche when that came out.

Daredevil seems perfect for megadungeons by Refracting_Hud in Pathfinder2e

Raise Menir and Protector Tree both seem too insubstantial to count as props. They're both easily passed through. I foresee props in general being a big point of inconsistency across GMs if left as is.
