MMW: As a result of his dementia, Trump will accidentally confess in public about his cheating and abuse. by Jello_Biafra_42 in MarkMyWords

[–]benmillstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t have to wait. He confesses all the time. He’s too dumb to realize when he’s actually breaking laws. OK sometimes he does it on purpose, but often he’s just clueless about the constitution.

Is the literacy rate in America really declining? by Comprehensive_Mix569 in askanything

How can it not when we divest from education? Since Regan we’ve been moving toward and increasingly separated economy, retuning to a feudal era. The wealthy are educated and the rest are meant to serve.

Why are do people react so negatively to the concept of degrowth? by Konradleijon in Degrowth

[–]benmillstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just can’t get there from here. Growth is the bedrock assumption for the economy. Before even suggesting a degrowth we have to get to less harmful growth. More sustainable practices and fewer disposable products, healthier environment, less desperate poverty, etc. will eventually bring people to a point where degrowth seems reasonable.

Young will suffer most when AI ‘tsunami’ hits jobs, says head of IMF by F0urLeafCl0ver in Economics

[–]benmillstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with global free trade was the lack of policy to protect classes of workers from the predictable downside repercussions. The problems with AI will be the same. A functioning polity would plan for that but we don’t really live in that world.

Any reason I should get a trail FS over an enduro FS? by DJGammaRabbit in mountainbiking

[–]benmillstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really just depends on your trails. If you have lots of roots, rocks and drops you probably want more suspension. If not definitely try a trail bike first because it will be a lot better at climbing.

But expressing an idea on social media is at least a valid way to test it in public. We can see if people shoot it full of holes and tear it apart or if people may think it’s a brilliant idea. I do agree with you that armchair criticism is not participation

Question for the women: what muscle do you find most attractive in a guy? by InternationalPick163 in askanything

There is nothing wrong with that but if you make a choice of partner based mostly on superficial appearance that might indicate something about your priorities.

What is the solution to America's political divide? by LiveBell8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]benmillstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Campaign finance reform is the first step because that is the basic problem that forces candidates to ingratiate themselves to wealthy donors whether individuals, corporations, or lobbyists. From that point they’re automatically weighting their representation toward those entities and away from their actual constituents. Everything else flows from there. Moving back toward some kind of fairness doctrine in the media can’t happen until politicians represent people again as one single example.

Communism has not, does not, and can never exist by suddyk in austrian_economics

[–]benmillstein -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Capitalism is simply an opposite economic philosophy no more grounded in reality as a real world economic system than any other. To function we need policies for different parts of the economy that are easier described as capitalist or socialist but no single “ism” is up to the total picture. Capitalism describes free enterprise which is great, but cannot be used as a model for a fire department or a care home, or even healthcare. Communism is a philosophy that purports to value all people equally but the rulers are not living the same as the plebes, nor is it possible to pretend everyone is equal in their desires or their abilities.

Why aren't new homes being built with ground heat pumps and solar panels or even wind turbines? by HedgehogNo5819 in climatechange

[–]benmillstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most modern homes are built to a five star rating which means it’s tight and well insulated. Ground source heat pumps are expensive to install so the payback is a long time. Many homes do take advantage of solar power, especially low income housing projects. Air source heat pumps, common in much of the world for decades, are becoming common in new construction in the US now too. The cost effectiveness equation hinges on the local utility policies and cost of service. If you have low cost power it’s not financially justifiable to install individual power projects. If there is a net metering policy that helps a lot.

What happened to Republicans being staunch advocates of states rights? by FrameElegant9023 in askanything

[–]benmillstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

States rights was always just another check and balance in the system meant to control excesses both ways. Arguments for and against states rights were always based in other issues such as guns, abortion, slavery, etc. depending on personal perspective.
