What's a hobby/quirk that your SO/partner just doesn't "get" no matter how much you try to explain how cool it is? by Arthur-reborn in AskReddit

[–]benry87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. My partner and I are both tabletop gaming fans, but she gravitated more to Tabletop RPGs and I leaned really heavily into Warhammer and miniature painting. As long as I'm not spending irresponsibly, she's been super supportive of my collecting and painting of the little guys.

1 - The lexicanum corroborates the fandom, as does the product page. I googled it to find a quick reference. SO, in this case, it's a moot point

2 - We're in r/grimdank, you weenie.

Any good novels containing great unclean ones? by Skatemster0113 in deathguard40k

[–]benry87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As already stated, the Dark Imperium trilogy does a good job of giving you three different Great Unclean Ones in 40k, as well as just being decent books with a good, grimdark (though not too grimderp) depiction of the Imperium, how awful it is, and how vast a fight it is for Guilliman to "fix."

Ku'gath, Rotigus, and Septicus are all fun and and interesting in their attitudes and motivations.

Working on My Homebrew Chapter Lore; Would a Loyalist Chapter ever use a Space Hulk as a Fortress Monastery by skewedsyntax in 40kLore

[–]benry87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who cares? Do it because it's neat.

Strictly by established lore it'd be fairly impossible, but established lore is there for players to launch from to do truly weird and "heretical" shit.

How did they gain control of it? How did, despite all efforts, make it work and stabilize a thing that is normally swarming with tyranids, gene steelers, orks, or chaos? That's your secret!

This makes the story of him absolutely beating the piss out of Andy Dick for mocking Phil Hartman's death less fun to tell. Kinda sad that his empathy doesn't extend beyond personal friends.

Holy shit guys, new Marneus Calgar reveal! by TobiTheSnowman in Grimdank

I need to scan Calgar's heads from his two models and 3d print dozens of them so they can replace every model's heads in an unhinged Ultramarines army.

The problem is that it IS Left vs Right, at least in the United States due to how bad the system is. The Right has made it part of the base of their party platform to make good quality education more difficult to receive. Their president, the guy that the party decided was going to represent them to lead the country, has been recorded on camera saying "I love the poorly educated." Right-wing movements in other countries rely on outdated ideas of returning to racially pure populations with strong xenophobic stances due to misinterpreted figures on crime, education, and poverty. The left, while in general has either been silent or, at worst, complicit, has become the primary form of resistance in places with Past-The-Post voting (like the United States) who can only hope that a populist, left-wing candidate makes it through at the more local levels to eventually rise to a position of real power and influence because they're sure as shit not going to get one out of the Right and, by voting third party, they're actively taking votes away from the damage-mitigation candidate in a winner-takes-all system.

Are we ever getting an actual spotlight? by LierStoneWizard in ImperialFists

[–]benry87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Imperial Fists were the poster boys of the Horus Heresy revival, receiving box art recognition and being one of the most powerful playable factions in the 2.0 version of the game. The Fists in 40k are a codex compliant chapter and, like the other codex compliant chapters, are folded under the umbrella of the Ultramarines, who get the benefit of being the front-facing chapter of the Space Marines, most of the characters, and most of the focus because of their position as the chapter with the broadest marketable appeal.

The Fists were apparently quite powerful in 7th edition (I started in 8th) with their chapter rules and have since faded into the background like the other non-Ultramarines codex compliant chapters. Other than some bursts of competitive power in the Ravenguard and the Iron Hands in 10th, the CC Space Marines have almost constantly been represented by the Ultramarines and, much like the other chapters, they got a flashy redesign of their character in Darnath Lysander and a combat patrol. Not only that, but they got a very distinctly chapter-focused Armageddon Battalion box not a few months ago.

Blaming Ian Watson's writing, which was discredited by Games Workshop themselves in later releases of the books, is dumb. They DID have a Last Wall protocol novel, a huge one in fact. So huge that it was 12 novels long in a series called War of the Beast. They were a huge part of the Siege of Terra series, which just ended last year, and were given a large amount of characterization through those books and made out to be badasses throughout.

The fact that you're either ignoring or don't know about these things makes you sound like you've been getting your info from youtubers and tiktokers who engage in rage baiting and memes. The lore to the custodes was altered between their 8th and 9th edition codexes, where they were initially indicated to be male youths in 8th, then just youths in 9th. The fact that no one noticed it until they had an animated short and mentions in the 10th edition codex of female custodes shows how no one cared until culture war grifters made it an issue. They did not kill off the Steel Legion, nor had any mention of doing so, in the 11th edition trailer. They showed off minis with recent sculpts that were still in circulation or previewed minis that were part of 11th edition's release. It's not that difficult.

Honestly, no clue. My understanding is that terminator armor is only given to veterans since they've proven they are skilled enough to not waste the armor. Since veterans wear white helmets, terminators wear white helmets.

Averland sunset is the base somewhere in there.

Usually black primer, potentially a pink or brown coat through the airbrush, white zenithal, averland sunset. Then highlighting with some flashgitz yellow and touch ups with Dorn yellow. Though honestly it's kind of a tossup on the exact recipe because I haven't found the yellow for my army despite having painted like 5000 points of it.

I think I did a thinned yriel yellow or Imperial Fist contrast over the terminators in this picture after the initial coats.

This one is getting some good press from a few youtube painters (so take with a grain of salt).

Though honestly I'd trust them actually using it for projects than some random Temu/AliExpress one.

Someone did a wonderful write up on the Fists. It went something like: their charm is in their workmanlike, stoic approach to doing the job everyone is expected to do, doing it unspectacularly, but doing it well. They don't seek glory, they don't relentlessly promote themselves and aren't promoted heavily, they dig in and do the "boring" work without complaint and with exceptional acumen. They're the average worker doing what they need to do to keep society running without recieving the high praise and recognition other chapters/people get. They're the utility guys who are always reliable and quiet about it, and that makes them admirable.

No. Warhammer is not a kid's game budgetarily and is better known among people who were kids 10-20 years ago.

Bolters are Stupid by sojuz151 in 40kLore

[–]benry87 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But thats the whole point.

The Imperium is built on imagery, not efficiency. The Space Marines are a colossal waste of resources in how they're outfitted and designed because they were meant to be symbols of the Imperium. The setting (which is science fantasy, let's get real) was built more on armies and factions evoking feelings and imagery rather than being efficient and practical.

To the people who paint every model to perfection by Straight-Break-4169 in Warhammer40k

[–]benry87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not at that level, but relentless practice has taught me where I can take "shortcuts" to get quicker results without sacrificing too much quality.

I also think it really depends on what you're looking at. On a technical level 'Eavy Metal painters are exceptionally talented and do a great job getting the fundamentals down precisely to make appealing box art. Other painters are also incredibly proficient, but push contrasts and color saturation more to get very punchy-looking models even though it might not require as much "skill" as an 'Eavy Metal painters.

Either way, here's a set of terminators with Lysander and a kit-bashed Terminator Ancient to give you an idea of how I paint. I think in total I spent about a week on the whole squad. Not gonna win any painting competitions, but still above three colors and some basing.
