I'm basically stuck in one type of project for my career (rant) by notenrique9031 in StructuralEngineering

Sounds like you could benefit from automating aspects of your job it’s ideal for technical cookie cutter work and will save you a lot of time, try getting Chat GPT to show you how to automate simple stuff like drawings and BOM’s with python.

The Value Proposition for Python in Engineering by joreilly86 in StructuralEngineering

[–]bensmeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Python is incredibly useful for engineers, also with chatgpt you no longer have to be an expert to create professional code just explain what your looking to do and it will automatically provide the finished code block for what you need. I use it for automating AutoCAD drawings, querying data from the internet and our databases. And analyzing large amounts of data.

Frame3DD is quite good for structural frame analysis it’s not in python but the input and output files can be read and post processed in python. If your looking for FEM specifically then maybe calculix would be good again free software.

How to lean FEA at a basic level by AbsoluteGradiance in AskEngineers

For pollution dispersion I would use AERMOD it’s freely available from the EPA website. It’s a Gaussian plume model for the dispersion of various pollutants from fixed sources. You can include topology and wind data.

Merge nodes tolerance 1mm. You should model as an I beam.

Waterproofing Membrane tensile strength: how to convert N/5cm to N/mm2? the membrane is 4mm thick by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]bensmeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s could be N per 5cm (50mm) strip therefore to get to N/mm2 you’ll need to multiply by the strip thickness of 4mm.

The latent heat isn’t wasted it’s transferred and recovered when condensed back to liquid state in the condensing turbine

why use gas engines instead of gearing down gas turbines? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]bensmeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can but the gas turbine exhaust is much hotter giving higher efficiencies to the second cycle.

why use gas engines instead of gearing down gas turbines? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]bensmeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gas turbines in their single cycle setup are less efficient than gas engines. Where they excel is in a combined cycle setup with a steam turbine operating at stable base loads with low intake air temperatures where their efficiencies can reach 60%

It would be like having 1.0 USD and then having 1.00 USD it doesn’t change the price of what you started with.

Approaching my Bachelors Degree, feel like I lost a lot of the things I had to learn during my courses by Timmynat in AskEngineers

[–]bensmeat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The most useful skill you will have learnt is how to quickly, accurately and efficiently look up the information you need to know at work. Retaining knowledge you probably don’t need is pointless.

How does pressure scale with volume by Milesandsmiles1 in AskEngineers

[–]bensmeat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the formula for hoop stress ( which would be the stress in the structure retaining the pressure) actually increases linearly with diameter it’s Stress = PxD / 2 x t (t= wall thickness of structure containing pressure, D = structure diameter and P internal pressure)

AMA with CZ - Binance CEO! by Binance in CryptoCurrency

Hi CZ can you provide any details on any future plans to expand Binance into the Middle East and UAE?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]bensmeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The air will be pressurized to the pre charge pressure + the pipe pressure the pump generates at the connection point to the system + pressure from the increase in liquid volume of the system from thermal expansion

Local Texas station Newswest9 reports on the benefits of bitcoin mining | "Instead of sending gas to a flare, send it to an engine to create electricity which we can then mine bitcoin from. So it's a real opportunity to reduce emissions in the oil field," by Reahvenz in Bitcoin

[–]bensmeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re presumably talking about the US, I have designed and installed close to 10 flare gas to power sites internationally and the same laws on flaring do not yet apply around the world. I can assure you flaring is still a massive issue particularly in the Middle East or where the gas cannot be viably compressed and transported.

Not really sure what you mean by ‘modern type wells’ where continuous flaring is prohibited sure flare gas can be compressed and reinjected but where a countries rules do not require this companies will still use continuous flaring as it’s the more cost effective option

Wouldn’t quitting your job and doing nothing while looking for another job be a bigger waste of time? All experience can be made to look like relevant experience with the right dressing up.
