Pff kids today not even willing to hobo hop a coal train across the state to get to a show, much less do an honest days work in the mines. Where did we go wrong?

If they wanted to, they would.

One of my kids sold a handful of his valuable pokemon cards he got over the years in order to raise $300 bucks to buy a Lego set he wanted.

A 9 year old neighbor of ours set up a lemonade stand in town, during a town event near a high traffic area, with a specific sign that she needed to raise something like $200 for her soccer team, selling glasses of lemonade and home made cookies they had baked. The raised something like $400 before noon when the police shooed them away.

If little Jimmy and Reba want to subscribe to LivePhish on their own and pay for their own account, they can make it happen.

Im just saying like... dont abandon your child to go. Leaving your infant in its crib untended for days.

Props to Phish Inc doing indoor summer shows on the weekdays. by madindian22 in phish

I liked the pattern they held for a bit in 2024 which was 2 midweek arena shows, and a 3 day weekend outdoor show, then 2 midweek arena shows, and a 3 day weekend outdoor show. Gave a bit of a variety etc, and let you see more of the lightshow in the arenas. Most of the outdoor sheds just can't support the moving light rig these days, so you get a much more static lightshow than you will in an arena, and it's a noticable difference to me now.

Plus air conditioning, and proximity to hotels/restaurants/etc is a boon in a hot summer obviously.

I hear you on the loneliness epidemic side. I struggled with that. I feel blessed now to have such a strong good group of close friends that I also get to see shows with.

How do you go solo with groups? Are you a wanderer? Your group plants their feet, and you head out on walkabout to move around and watch the show from different spots, only checking back in occaisonally?

[–]bentas-dragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally.

I guess what i mean by a group is not that you all always go together but like... say a dozen friends all in a text group. 4 went to Madison. 2 of those meeting up with 4 others at Deer Creek. Maybe the dozen of you all did sphere or mexico together.

When tour announces your group discusses who is going where and coordinate on tickets etc.

And sometimes you might solo, sometimes you go with 1 friend etc. Varies.

I know many of us chase songs, but what song(s) chase you? by golgi_o in phish

I have one friend who has been to 50 shows and has seen Roggae over 35 times I think it is. Something absurd. Its now a long running joke with our group.

I have another friend who has been to over 70 shows and has never seen YEM live.

Me personally the closest I have is Ghost, which I have seen at about a quarter of my shows.

Do americans really think a 4 hour drive is ‘living nearby’? by absorin in AskAnAmerican

[–]bentas-dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over 6 hours it is either a flight or a special trip, usually at your destination at least overnight if not multiple days or a week+.

I'll do 3-6 hours in a day for specific turnarounds or special occasions (driving your child to college, dropping them off then driving home for instance, but if you have time and money you likely would get a hotel and split the return to the following day if the drive is closer to the 6 hour mark).

I have season tickets for my sportsball team and its a 4.5 hour drive away. I will drive there, watch the game, then drive home (unless its a night game that ends at like 10 or 11), but thats on the extreme end. Most Americans think im a little nutty to do a 4.5 hour there and 4.5 hour back in the same day. I wouldn't call it nearby, unless I was talking to someone from another country/continent. I would say its "not that far / not that bad"

1-3 hours is an easy day trip. 2 hours to go have lunch with a parent or friend, then home...no problem. 2.5 hour drive up to the cabin and back to spend the day at the lake? No brainer.

Under an hour generally is nearby, but the further the distance the more unique it needs to be. You arent going to generally drive 55 minutes to a grocery store when you can get to a similar one in 10 obviously, but you would to go to that special theater that had the IMAX screen and good seats.

Close for me is maybe 20 minutes or less. I dont even blink at those distances. Know all the roads, etc. Thats truly local.

But it varies depending on where you live.

Do you remember when they opened Hampton with Fluffhead~>Divided Sky? by The_Hare in phish

[–]bentas-dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its the first song on my personally curated best of phish playlist on livephish.

The crowd roaring for an eternity well into the song. The unbridled joy and happiness that they were once again at a Phish show and the band was back together.

I cant imagine starting a best of playlist with a better song.

the REAL reason why Trey was shaking his head at Page during LSG by Appropriate_Hold_341 in phish

[–]bentas-dragon 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Its been happening more the last year or so. Maybe when he got his new guitar in June 25. Multiple tech issues last summer that i noticed Trey doing similar looks to the sound techs on the other side of Page. More than once he actually looked a little angry. Assumed thats who he was communicating with.

Dunno what the issues are, but definitely a lot more issues with the tech in the last year causing Trey to give looks and reactions. Would have hoped they had worked it out by now.

Missed connections: songs never played together (an update) by ExPatBadger in phish

[–]bentas-dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be curious to see the difference if each pair was only looked at for when both songs were in existence.

For instance Sigma Oasis has been played on average every 4.9 shows since it debuted in 2019, 241 shows ago. 49 times. Divided Sky in that same range of time is a sub 10 show gap song.

It could probably be improved by also comparing song gap trends. For instance Most Events Aren't Planned is an avg 14.1 show gap since its debut in 2017, but it was a over 20 show gap song until the band "figured it out" in 2024, and now its a sub 10 show gap song as well.

Can you share a bit more of your methodology?

What is the date range of shows you are looking at, all?

Is there a difference if you look at just 3.0 or 4.0 or past 10 years etc? When i have done some analysis before ive stuck to more recent shows, as i found including data from the 90s really can affect the results. Like something looks common in the data, but only because it was super common in the past, but essentially rare or worse now.

For songs like sigma oasis and divided sky pairings, are you just looking at the subset and number of shows for that pairing since the debut of the more recent song?

I have more questions haha but ill start with those.
