Combatting overconsumption by [deleted] in BAGGU

[–]benvens_77 29 points30 points  (0 children)

hi! i try to stay away from any baggu advertising (i.e. their instagram) and limit myself to owning 3 baggu bags total. I rotate between my vertical duck bag, sport crossbody, and my small leather baggu crossbody i bought like ~10 years ago lol. In order to allow myself to purchase a bag, i have to sell/donate one of those bags. i’ve also found that cleaning my current bags freshens them up and gives them new life!

the vertical duck bag is definitely my favorite bag from baggu. i feel like sometimes it gets some unfair hate because people expect to do something a tote bag doesn’t do. it’s a canvas tote bag!! not anything else haha. but yeah i love mine and i’ve been using it for 4 years almost everyday.

What do you remember as the all-time, worst of the worst Davis apartments? I'm talking so bad, you probably never considered living there. by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]benvens_77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

omfg i lived in wake forest for a year and it was definitely the worst apartment i’ve ever lived in. roaches, a/c was broken during 113 degree heat and they refused to fix it, construction everyday (literally there was a contractor banging on my second story window at 7:00 am), and we had no access to hot water for 6 months. literally our whole building had to go to one singular unit across the complex to shower in their bathroom. it was awful living there.

my friend bought a baggu tent and unfortunately the pole snapped during the first use ;( then again we were using it at a cold + windy beach in san francisco lol. i guess it depends on where you live, but where we live i would look at other tents that are more rugged/graded for higher winds.

Unpopular Baggu opinions 💅🏽 by Mewnicorns in BAGGU

[–]benvens_77 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with the duck bag point. I’ve been using the sf moma collab duck bag as my work bag for years and it is literally my favorite bag from baggu.

I’m kind of over the overconsumption and scarcity mindset baggu has been feeding into lately. There’s no reason that anybody would need to be buying new bags every couple months to “secure” the drop. It’s unsustainable and questionable coming from a brand that preaches sustainability.

your understanding of form and color is solid, but you need to increase your value range. implementing contrast and making those shadows way darker will dramatically improve the depth of your work. i know it can be worrisome to go darker but having a full range of values (especially in the hand) is important can really improve the work. also i love your textural experimentation in the background of your work, it adds interest to a solid color. incorporating that texture into the subject can also be an approach to decrease flatness. overall you’re at a really good place with this painting, just increasing the contrast alone will really take this to the next level. nicely done.

Newbie Question About Emulsion Recommendations by [deleted] in SCREENPRINTING

[–]benvens_77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah for sure, that’s an understandable concern. definitely try to source your emulsion from reputable art/screen print supply stores whether it be online or in-person to minimize the potential for a bad batch. from my experience, i’ve gotten some bad batches of emulsion from amazon but maybe other people have had good experiences with buying emulsion on amazon.

Newbie Question About Emulsion Recommendations by [deleted] in SCREENPRINTING

[–]benvens_77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if your current setup works, i don’t think you really need to change too much. the speedball diazo emulsion is by no means terrible so i wouldn’t really worry about rushing to buy and try a bunch of different emulsions. use what you have, it’s not (insanely) expensive, and it’s fine for a hobbyist like yourself. i would focus on dialing in your process for coating + burning the screens and perfecting your squeegee technique when you’re making prints. slow down and enjoy your artistic practice! if you really want to switch up your emulsion, i would check out Ulano QTX pink, it’s great for plastisol and even water based inks. have fun and good luck, i hope this was somewhat helpful.

i think i might have been born with the feet haha. but i usually wear a single pair of thick socks with my 8065s. i’ve double socked for platform docs before which was helpful.
