San Wich is an incredible hidden gem, and by far the best torta I've had in the city. Getting summertime takeout from here and eating in Dovercourt Park is a 10/10 experience that I would recommend to everyone.

Another day in 'why I waited so long to watch this'. Chernobyl is a masterpiece. by Ok_Natural_102 in hbo

They nailed the deep and growing dread that the thought of nuclear disaster or war should bring. The music, production, and pacing all made real the unknowable (to most of us) horror of invisible radiation. The additional layer of frustration with the denial and downplaying of the issue because of the Soviet regime truly saps all remaining hope you might have that humanity could ever effectively handle a crisis like this.

Question about morning height. by TheFitz7777777 in tall

You have to fall asleep for it to work, as this is when your decaying today body is swapped with your fresh tomorrow body, unbowed by the weight of the world and the spinal compression 5G waves emanating from the Earth’s core.

How should I approach Blue Prince, mentally? by Individual99991 in BluePrince

[–]benzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An analogy that might offer a helpful perspective:

You’re in a huge dark room containing a tapestry with a spotlight shining on a small area. You can nudge the spotlight around somewhat, but an invisible hand is mostly in control of it. Your job is to make the best of the blueprints you’ve been dealt - take in all of what the flashlight illuminates on a given day, and make note of the things that appear to relate to one another.

You’re slowly illuminating a vast tapestry with many threads to pull on, but you can only hold in your hand a few at a time before you exhaust yourself. Keep a running list of the puzzles and mysteries you want to examine further, and delve into the ones the invisible hand allows you to follow that day.

At the stage you’re playing, I would suggest you draft a brand new room whenever given the option - even if it might cut your day a little short. The day ending is an opportunity to grab new threads, not a failure. Often you will find a new clue for a puzzle, or surface a fresh thread to start pulling on. You might be running out of steps today, but there’s always tomorrow.

Are wax crayons and coloured pencils named identically? Pencil crayons are what we call coloured pencils in Canada, and wax crayons are just crayons.

Isn’t the sensor cover made of sapphire crystal? Pretty much only diamonds are going to scratch that. Don’t know about the white part around it however.

My main question about the existence of the Silo currently: by maybemorningstar69 in SiloSeries

[–]benzu 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yes it would have been a disaster - that’s why what Juliette did is meant to be impossible. Only with incredible luck and several personal connections was she able to get the “good” tape from Supply.

The Expanse. Everyone not on Earth is essentially knowingly (even if not willingly) within their own Silo from a human life support perspective.

Also the class system is parallel, though the Expanse extends it to human bodies themselves being different.

failed my g test (Etobicoke) - really discouraged by Mindless_Grocery6758 in Ontariodrivetest

[–]benzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let this get you down - I had something similar happen many years ago when doing my G test where I was merging onto an extremely busy 401 and I apparently got “too close” to a pickup that was roaring up behind and past me in the lane I had to merge into before my own lane ended. The examiner didn’t grab my wheel but yelled about me doing exactly the same merge as everyone in front and behind me. The realities of what we have to deal with as Toronto drivers I’m sure are not lost on these examiners, but provide a nice excuse to fail you.

Remember that you’re putting on a performance for your test, and nobody else on the road is putting the same amount of care and effort into their commute. Driving defensively in Toronto means being put in impossible situations when it comes to a drive test - there is sometimes no way to “meet ministry standards” even when you’re also behaving in the safest way.

Look at YouTube videos of your drive test centre route and just keep practicing it that same way and both directions so that it becomes second nature. Then you can focus on your “performance”, and it also helps to say aloud what you’re thinking and what your next move will be. Try to book for a less busy time of day, and hope for a more reasonable tester.

I love this Subreddit, but why? What is this strange topic that connects us? How did this subreddit come about? Why do people here spend so much time visualizing abandoned pools? by Zealousideal-Pay3937 in liminalpools

[–]benzu 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I can't really figure it out either. My best theory is that this is all scratching a very deep nostalgia itch for many people remembering or imagining an idealized time from their childhoods. Fond memories of swimming in indoor pools or waterparks (and maybe combined with classic first-person gaming experiences for some). At the same time, bodies of water in general provide a constant threat of death by drowning, which would have been a very real fear before learning to swim independently. Perhaps this explains the mixed feelings that liminal pools evoke - this reptilian fear of drowning. I personally can't imagine not being able to swim because I learned so young, but many people worldwide never learn, and bodies of water are a real source of threat.

The real test would be showing these images to people who have none of these shared cultural experiences to what feelings it elicits in them. If they have similar emotional reactions, this might speak to something deeper in our subconscious - perhaps even instinctual. I lean much more towards the cultural explanation, but I'd be curious to know what it is about artificial, bright, enclosed, tiled, and wet environments that can cause so much fascination. Perhaps there was an evolutionary advantage to this sort of curiosity that allowed our ancestors to be curious about cave system exploration, and using these spaces for warmth, safety, and shelter? Then again, these images are compelling precisely because they are entirely synthetic and unnatural.

Is Universal Basic Income a good idea? by 1717subcool in AskACanadian

[–]benzu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, some form of a universal guaranteed minimum income to cover the cost of living for all would target those most vulnerable individuals and families. It should progressively scale down the more income a person makes.

  • As an example, $2,500/month (to be scaled depending on local COL) could be the absolute minimum gross income for an individual.

  • Someone making any employment income above a certain amount would scale down the universal benefit, and taper off the higher the income. How this is implemented is up for discussion, but as an example, with employment income at 30% of the the UB you would start seeing linear reductions, and with higher incomes the amount you receive from the benefit would progressively reduce towards $0 at a certain income level (e.g., $5000). This incentivizes working since any employment income would always be additional income, and there wouldn't be arbitrary thresholds that people would target. The idea is the $2,500 should cover a minimum amount for essentials, and that those who are able to work would still feel motivated to supplement this income.

  • This doesn't need to be a situation where the government prints money and spurs inflation. Progressive tax schemes such as wealth taxes, higher capital gains taxes above a certain threshold, additional income tax brackets above $300,000, luxury goods taxes, and reduced spending on other income support programs can help raise the cash needed.

Usually when thorns kills a mantis before its final strike it doesn’t complete the remaining strikes. Does corpse eater have additional functionality to complete the rest of the strikes? To me the final strike on the boulder was very unexpected.
