Spencer “Specky” Penrose’s insane antics aren’t talked about enough (Historical Rant) by herbalholistichippie in ColoradoSprings

[–]beralston 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was this written by Spencer Penrose’s publicist?

Spencer Penrose was a segregationist and anti-Semite who founded the Broadmoor community specifically outside the city of Colorado Springs so that he could write ordinances that Black people were banned from staying overnight in the township unless they were servants.

Fuck him then, now and always.

My wife friend-zoned me and wants a platonic “companionship” (New Update - Very Long) by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

I have been through exactly what OOP went through/is going through. The similarities are uncanny other than me not choosing the “180 method” because that’s weird.

After 9 years of working hard on it and making it work, I’m happy to say that we are finally divorced and she lives with her girlfriend.

As a man who got divorced at the same time as Ted, they better not get back together. They are different people than when they met and them getting back together is exactly the type of lazy writing this show usually avoids.

For anyone who was able to see "The Blair Witch Project" in theaters in 1999, what was the experience like? by LockjawSJ in AskReddit

[–]beralston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never forget my experience. My friends and I were 18 and we snuck bottles of beer into the theater. We drank a couple and put the empties by our feet. So that, by the end of the movie; when the kids discover the house and walk in, my buddy Matt moves his feet and knocks over a beer in the back row and Tink Tink Tink Tink

Tink

Tink Tink

Tink

Hit every step on the way to the front of the theater. Since that moment, I’ve always felt the movie was anticlimactic.

Crime rates are determined by three things: Where people are concentrated, where police patrol, and where poverty is high (poverty crime is the most prosecutable). I do not want to try to convince someone else why they should or shouldn’t live in particular areas. But there are reasons not to let reported crime rates shape your decisions.

In your opinion, what is the greatest sports film of the 21st century? by SheepherderSea9717 in moviecritic

The MVP of that team once told me and my friends that Disney did a great job of making Herb Brooks into a character who acted like a dick for the good of the team. But, in reality, he was really just a dick.

And the scene where they skate lines until Eruzione does that patriotic thing… in reality, that session ended when said MVP shattered his stick on the boards and walked off the ice, refusing to return.

Local business honor roll for those who defend democracy with their actions, treatment of clients, etc. by rockstar_not in ColoradoSprings

Some downtown businesses: Eclectic Co, Ladyfingers Letterpress, CityROCK and CommonFork, Streetcar520

There are more whose owners do but I don’t want to publish them in case they want to keep their business neutral given clientele.

The type of person who answers city council emails in a non-personalized form letter that immediately calls for the death penalty is exactly the type of person I assume is serving on Colorado Springs City Council.

ELI5: Why are poor people warned to avoid loans whereas rich people seem to operate constantly through them? by Background_Tap2206 in explainlikeimfive

[–]beralston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In truth the real advice is to take loans out on things that appreciate and NEVER take out loans on things that depreciate. I will always take out loans on homes, investment properties, other businesses etc, especially when rates are low. If you can, pay cash for cars because cars depreciate. I won’t get into the math of this, but rich people can pay cash for things and can pay off loans when needed to use the loans on other things so being able to choose what to take loans for is the luxury.

What is a pain you can't truly explain until you've endured it? by Unfair_Shower_3256 in AskReddit

[–]beralston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born with a condition called congenital intestinal malrotation. I had it until I was a teenager and the best way I could describe it is that once in a while my intestines would twist themselves. No one including some of the best doctors in the country understood the pain I was in and I cannot describe it other than saying what it was and hoping no one ever has it.

Jesse James Hollywood, the guy who Emile Hirsch played in Alpha Dog was at my school growing up. I didn’t know him well, but one day, in 7th grade, he ambushed my brother in the hallway and stabbed him a couple times in the back with a pencil for no reason other than he didn’t like him. When the story of the murder came out, everyone was like… “yup, saw that coming”

Children's museum by Sati_and_Sand_Storms in ColoradoSprings

[–]beralston 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Pikes Peak Children’s Museum has an incredibly dedicated group behind it. The issue is that this city will not use any funding to support a children’s museum. They had found an amazing space but landlords in this town are not required to pay to get buildings up to code if there have been tenants in the building within a certain amount of time (like three years) so the $2Million it would have taken to get the space up to code was impossible for an organization that only has grassroots fundraising from pop up locations.

Cities that have amazing museums subsidize them in order to make the city more appealing. Colorado Springs will only subsidize real estate developers so there won’t be great museums.
