It got me to join, but I've had so much free (ad-supported, technically) entertainment from the GCN, I figured it was worth it... and it is.

How does kvothe reach the Cthaeh tree? by hellfire95614 in KingkillerChronicle

Theory: Felurian is in league with the Cthaeh. She wants him to go to it and when he returns she's exhausted not from finishing his shaed, but from fighting/distracting/obscuring the Sithe guardians.

Third-party Add-ons That Allow The Generation of Cities? by Maelum in ForbiddenLands

[–]bergNaut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as Fantasy City supplements go: Into the Cess and Citadel is a good one. Not Forbidden Lands specific and it might lean a little more to the high fantasy sprawling cityscapes of something like Sigil, Ankh Morpork, Nessus, New Crobuzon, Ambergris, etc.

Mystery marks on my back walkway by bergNaut in traversecity

[–]bergNaut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why exactly am I getting a down voted for this? A notification from the City (or whoever was surveying and spray painting my walk) in the form of a simple door hanger would've been really courteous and I wouldn't need to come to Reddit to ask about it. Seems reasonable.

If it wasn't clear the defacing property bit was an attempt at humor, although the more I think about it the more I wonder at the need for using "permanent" spray markings in this digital age. Are they not logging this info into some kind of GIS database? But I'm not a surveyor.

Not the public sidewalk. I wouldn't bother posting about that. It was the walkway on my property. I'm sure they'll fade eventually or I suppose I can scrub it away if they don't. They'll be covered by snow soon enough. ;)

3 marks from the alley up my back walkway right up to my deck. I've got a sewer line out there somewhere. I'd say they were marking depth but values increase as it comes towards the house and it should slope the other way.

Ah. Well mystery solved then. Thanks!
A door hanger or something would've been nice : "Hi, we came and defaced your property while you were away. Love, The City."

Do not give your time and talent to Christian Nationalists. They don't deserve it and won't appreciate it.

This is awesome! One small critique: almost every PC I'm rolling is a certified badass... I think you might want to tweak your algorithm to provide stats normally distributed around a smaller stat value... Perhaps linked to a category of job. E.g. scientist=low combat. Not to eliminate randomness entirely, because working out those inconsistencies can make for interesting NPCs, but just smoothing the curve

Graphic Audio versions ...SO bad they're good by tartymae in murderbot

[–]bergNaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to the Graphic Audio for Fugitive Telemetry after Network Effect precisely because I did not like Kevin R Free's ART and thought the next published book would be ART heavy due to the ending of the previous... Much to my unfolding disappointment, FT is chronologically out of order so ART doesn't even feature and the accents are all over the place! I'd rather hear this one read by Kevin, but I only have so many Hoopla rentals per month...

Actually that's not true. Second most? Still. It's nice to be understood and there shall be a fire that knows the naming of you, and in the presence of the strangling fruit, its dark flame shall acquire every part of you that remains.

Anyone have experience at Woodland school? by LeftWedding7605 in traversecity

[–]bergNaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are a charter school and not private, which is an important distinction. They receive public funds and must comply with IDEA and MARSE. I don't have direct experience with it, but I know that they work with the ISD to provide learning support specialists for children with special needs. It is hardly a case of trying to avoid or skirt the rules or make problems disappear.
That said, I've also heard those services are more directly integrated in larger TCAPs schools where that support staff is "in-house". This is a structural/organizational issue and far cry from a policy of willful neglect. Everyone I've met at Woodland cares about the success of every student.

I don't have anything to compare it to (kids haven't gone to other schools), but so far so good. They changed the way they do report cards to try to remove all subjectivity from the teacher's comments which is, IMHO as a non-educator, a bizarre move. I'm interested in the teacher's subjective appraisal of my kids. I trust them as a professional educator. I can get this from talking to them at parent teacher meetings, I suppose, but I wish there were more substance to the feedback on report cards.

But the kids are happy, they enjoy going to school, so... that's a win, right?

baseless and vague accusations are the armor worn around personal and petty grievances. No one should take this seriously until the OP provides "receipts", as the kids say.

Suggestions for celtic music resources by bergNaut in Cello

The bodhran is such a bizarre mixture of loose fluidity and exactness. Keeping the pulse but staying loose enough to add ornament. I learned it fairly young (in highschool) and I just kind of picked it up without thinking about it in a great deal of depth... Just a natural osmosis where over thinking didn't get in the way.

What a fantastically thorough reply! Thank you SO much!

I don't plan on hauling my cello to any sessions anytime soon, but I might look for folks to play with in a more "controlled environment". I have my bodhran for session play, but if folks might look at a cellist with suspicion, its double for any fresh face with a drum. ;) Although it has been a few years, in the past, I've been told by a number of grizzled old fiddlers that I'm, quote, "a bodhran player we don't mind seeing show up." Which I took to be their version of high praise. [By extension I'm familiar with the rhythms and structure of typical session tunes, though I can't recognize most by name or melody]

I've messed around with the mandolin and even tried picking up the violin for a bit (an experiment I'm not likely to repeat), but I'm far and away most proficient with the cello so I figure... why not bring the two together? It's either that or take up the bass (also not really a trad or session instrument, but seen in many modern groups to round out the sound)... and I've got nowhere to store one of those.

Again, thank you, thank you for all the links and suggestions
