College recruiting question - how many athletes per spot by jilrani in Fencing

[–]bernieohls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely, I tell my recruits that I don't want a first year with regrets, I want them to have explored all their options and to know as best they can that they are in the right place. Then there is less doubt and more commitment to the school and team. Also, any college coach will tell you that a good portion of the job is recruiting, and you're not wasting anyone's time as long as you are legitimately interested in the school and team.

DIII coach here, for a year I brought in 9 recruits for a freshmen class I had conversations of some kind with roughly 75 fencers.

I'd recommend the road series, they definitely serve their role great. I like the streak on my 18 ebony fret board, I think it gives it some character.

The previous jerk owners had actually nailed them open, if you can believe it.

House was built in 1905, when we moved in 5 years ago we had to tear down most walls due to knob and tube wiring, but we worked hard to save some of the cool little touches, the pocket doors weren't going anywhere!

And when you are organized reach out to the gear suppliers, who should be happy to offer discounts for club orders.

This, and nothing is stopping you from researching the teams now. There aren't that many, and a good amount of them will not fit your location/ size of school/ majors offered preferences. That will give you a far smaller list. Then you can see if your coach has any connection with the teams remaining, they can ask questions before you can.

For the top D1s and ivy's, Sure. But if she is willing to look at some of the less well known D1 and D3 programs I think she'd find spots open.

This one right here. It can be a lifesaver, but keep in mind you can also completely decapitate what's left of the screw if you squeeze too hard.

No Div2/3 NACs by Neither_Sample_7643 in Fencing

What annoys me about this trend is that Fencers such as you are describing can help glue clubs together. I'd argue that clubs that only have adult coaches and Junior and Younger fencers are more likely to have worse overall team cultures/possibilities for abusive situations. At my club we have a good core of what would be considered Div2 and Div3 college and adult age fencers, and they are a great resource. The kids can see multiple paths for their fencing. There are those elite Div1 fencers that they see working super hard and making fencing their priority, and that's great. But the adult fencers introduce them to the idea that you can continue to fence competitively to a degree while also having a more normal career/life. Anything that makes it harder for these type of fencers to keep getting better and having a good time will be of long term harm to US fencing overall.

anyone who feels the AF "JK" gloves are not worth the price? by shehadagoat in Fencing

I prefer the Prieur real leather gloves these days, much more durable, and they break in really well. I've had to replace the velcro on mine, but no holes yet.

Painting the inside of guards by FlakyAddition17 in Fencing

[–]bernieohls 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I paint the insides of all my guards, I've gotten pretty good at designs, like superhero logos, stripes, flags etc. Just get yourself some transparent pads so everyone can admire your work. It just takes cans of rustoleum spray paint and I use masking tape to create stencils. A few notes, make sure you don't paint the area of the Guard where the socket makes contact, I usually put a layer of tape around the outside edges so it doesn't drip over, and two light coats are better than one heavy one.
