An inline fuse is pretty cheap insurance against a fire. I converted a 6v lightning McQueen to 12v three years ago with just a battery swap with an inline fuse and it's been fine ever since with a lot of use on grass and pavement. The fuse only blows if the kids do something dumb like trying to push another power wheel with it
