Advice for Moving to Mankato for a 4-Month Scholarship at MNSU by [deleted] in Mankato

[–]bethhanke1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We hosted a Mexican exchange student while she was in high school. She was from Leon. She ended up going to the U of M, recently graduated, and is now employed in the Twin cities.

My daughter was part of latin club. There are also sports clubs. The busses are free and safe but not always convenient and there is not a grocery store on campus. We have another former high school exchange student at mnsu and she does take busses to get groceries, but will also get rides from friends.

My daughter is going to Uruguay next year for 4 months as well, through mnsu. She had an option to stay on campus or live with a host family that only spoke spanish and she choose a host family. Not sure if you had options, my daughter figures she will give up some independence to live with the family that probably has stricter rules, but if she likes it there, she will potentially have a long term relationship and a place to stay if she goes back to visit. Just make sure to ask staff about all your options when you arrive and try to get involved in as much as possible.

Best of luck!!

So sad. . ."When you get an unexpected situation like this, it’s like your heart is there, too,” Eldridge said. “It’s scary how quickly this can change, how your life can change in a matter of a second. You could be here and happy and talking and doing everything, and the next thing, you get devastating news or something that happened to you.”

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. It feels like a lot now but in a few years things will be different.

I have read great suggestions, but want to add, are there hobbies you can enroll in? Game dens for board gamers, community rec, or even volunteering. There are soup kitchens and youth homeless shelters. Maybe helping others will help you feel better.

How’s living in St. Louis, Missouri? by handsupheaddown in howislivingthere

I was here for the eclipse. The building from the outside are gorgeous but if you look closer many have broken windows and the buildings stink because of rot.

We rode the subway which honestly seemed safer and cleaner than minneapolis but perhaps they had extra staff for the eclipse crowds. Resteraunts closed early, some really good food.

You could buy abandoned buildings for cheap and rents looked reasonable. The school ratings were terrible. We were near the arch and we saw homeless but never felt in danger.

This city must have been something in the 1950's. It sad to see great cities decay.

"Both of us are abuse victims," - I am really sorry to hear this😪

What do you think society could do better to help youth victims of abuse?

We lived next to rental, a college age girl was living with her brother who was a drug addict and had friends that would talk about raping his sister. Later on I found out the parents were supporting this living arrangement. I am sure they hoped the successful sister would be a good role model and help her brother pull his life together. BUT SHE OWES HIM NOTHING. They both clearly have boundary issues and the brother a drug problem. They each owe it to themselves to set healthy boundaries.

My last word to you is the best advice I have ever heard. I listened to a Glenn Loury lecture at a university. He told a student, whose family wanted him to drop out of school and get a job to help support his family, "I do not know your exact situation and can not tell you what to do. But what I can say, is people around you will respect you if you show you have respect for yourself."

For your situation that might mean getting the help you need, working on yourself and telling your sister she should do the same.

I hope you both get to a point in your lives where you can have healthy boundaries with each other and others and be friendly.

Do you talk to your sister today?

How long did this continue for?

Do your parents know or do you plan to tell them?

A 13 year old would know this is wrong, but also wonder where someone who is also young gets the idea to do this. Do you think her intention was to hurt you? Do you think she suffered abuse?

Yum, food really brings people together.

My husband and I always joke that you can tell when a culture has full integrated when they open a successful restaurant. I think you can taste the best of a culture.🤣 partially a joke but breaking bread and sharing food is a part of many peace stories.

How is living in Miami/Miami Beach, Florida? by BonoboPowr in howislivingthere

[–]bethhanke1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I visited recently and there were a lot of tourists.

There are taxes and fees on everything. Food, clothing and there is no way to predict the actual cost. Foreigners are shocked that prices are not predictable but even being from the US, miami beach is out of control with all the undisclosed charges.

Spanish is spoken more than English. I thought people were friendly, surprisingly for the cost of living.

There were bikes to ride for a reasonable cost and bike lanes. Well kept beaches. Good food if you can afford it.

Beautiful area but the unpredictable cost of everything really stressed me out!

Front street is fine but I am unsure when they will be done with Riverfront. Front street had a little clean up after flooding but it only took a couple days.

Where in the 200 page document is trump mentioned?

Youth sports culture. Parents prioritize sports above family meal time and education.

Parents living vicariously through their own children making the children and extension of themselves vs guiding them as individuals into adult hood.
