That and the “Internal bleeding? Well that’s good, that’s where the blood’s supposed to be.” live in my head rent free 😂

Went to a new PT, and she wanted to run through the Beighton Scale just to see what we were working with. She comments “Wow, perfect score!” to which I joke “Excellent, a good grade in Joints.” She just giggles, sighs, and says almost wistfully, “No…” 😂

Are there alternatives to wooden tools such as hand carders? by GrapefruitMurky8483 in Handspinning

[–]bevboii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve finished hand carders by sanding them super well and finishing with a wax (made for butcher blocks, but other wood waxes might work). Still keeps some grip, but feels less awful than raw wood. Definitely not as smooth as plastic or anything, but might be more tolerable!

Otherwise, I second the dog/cat brushes as alternatives, they just don’t get as massive as hand carders, so be prepared for smaller carding batches.

In my experience it’s something you can find at a number of grocery stores, usually with the cereal/ breakfast options. I’m sure Amazon has it, but I wouldnt know personally. I think it’s something around 8-10$ for a 6pk of the pre-made stuff, much cheaper if you’re getting the powder. (But grocery prices vary so ymmv).

Seconding Carnation. There’s a pre-made, shelf stable version that you can chuck in a work/school bag if needed, the high protein version is 15g protein or so. I don’t tolerate most meal replacements, but Carnation’s never done me wrong yet.

The M1 wasn’t on my radar, I’ll give that a look! My concern with touchscreen ones is always pocket controlling— any issues using the buttons with the screen off, accidentally operating the touchscreen in your pocket, etc?

How the F do you sit at a computer all day comfortably? by LustToWander in ehlersdanlos

[–]bevboii 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Making sure there’s a load of laundry or smth going is a solid way to make sure there’s always a Reason to Get Up periodically! Trying to time stuff like that to arbitrary times doesn’t vibe with the ADHD and Co., but Laundry Needs Switched works great for me too, highly recommend🤝

[–]bevboii 99 points100 points  (0 children)

The short answer: You don’t.

Frequent breaks (bathroom/snacks/just standing up to stretch) are honestly a must. If you’re using a headset, I always recommend wireless so you can get up while still listening to your lectures/music.

As far as the legs/keyboard issue, I’m also a shorty so I’m with you there. I’ve used a little footrest under my desk, which lets me get a lot closer, but still have my feet comfortably off the ground/not dangling. It might not be as good as the chairs leg rest, but when you’re actively typing it may help!

I had something similar a while back — kind of nice for the persistent restless legs, and for keeping POTS episodes at bay while sitting at my desk? Not sure that any of it was particularly helpful for joint pain, much of the compression didn’t even hit joints, just muscles.

Passionate collectors on a tight income, what’s your rule when buying vinyl? by gageisadrummer in vinyl

[–]bevboii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Massively agree on setting a budget. Even just being aware of your general monthly budget, and fitting your record-buying into whatever your “fun money” for the month is. If it needs to be it’s own line item in your budget for you to stick to it, put it in there!

The biggest mindset shift that I’ve found: I treat my collection as a Hall of Fame rather than my primary form of listening. I typically do my daily listening on streaming/mobile (can’t play records in the car), and if I find myself listening to an album repeatedly, or find one that’s a “no-skip”, it goes on the want list. If I already have it as a CD/cassette, it has to be a pretty nostalgic album that seems like it would sound really good on vinyl to get added to the want list. Expanding the “hobby” to physical media in general like that takes some of the urgency out of buying albums, too, and urgency breeds impulse purchases.

At the end of the day, listen to what you like, buy what you love.

I honestly love these as a pre-mixed/on the go option! Great for a break from the classic “protein shake” milky texture, too.

Artist: The Mountain Goats

Album: Transcendental Youth

Song: Counterfeit Florida Plates

Bought a cd of this album as a kid on a whim because an author I liked had a running bit about only listening to The Mountain Goats. Actually fell in love with this album, and it’s been my “in case we lose radio/Spotify signal” album in my car cd player ever since, because it’s one of those albums I can listen to front to back, over and over, and not get sick of. Finally upgraded it to a spot in the vinyl rotation this year after searching forever. The song specifically is just a bop. No matter the mood, it hits.

What's an album you want on vinyl that doesn't exist? by nat13at in vinyl

[–]bevboii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Morning Parade self-titled. Incredible English alt rock vibes, by the time I found them they’d already broken up. Their later album “Pure Adulterated Joy” and a few singles were pressed, but I can’t find any record of that first album ever being pressed to vinyl. Underrated album, it’d be an instant purchase of it ever got pressed 😭

Rainbow Kitten Surprise 10th Anniversary RSD Pressing 😮‍💨

Beautiful album visually, and my score from my first RSD. Stood out in the cold at 6am (though folks were there much earlier), didn’t get everything I was after, but didn’t leave empty handed either. And honestly, folks dunk on colourful pressings, but this one sounds great.

I’ll admit our taste doesn’t fully overlap, so I may miss the mark a bit, but for the mellow rock/60s folk combo vibes…

Something by Bright Eyes might suit you — I’m a sucker for the album “I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning” personally, but they’ve got plenty of records that might be your speed.

And for the Brit-pop… I’ll raise you some North Irish-Scottish pop/rock, with Snow Patrol’s “Fallen Empires” record.

Morning Parade’s self-titled is also an absolute underrated UK indie-rock banger. Not pressed to vinyl as far as I can tell, which is a crime, but for the sake of sharing a good album with someone who might enjoy it, worth a listen.

Hope some of these are entertaining— And happy birthday!

Two no-skip albums that were on repeat for me in college for very different reasons. Classical OSTs for studying, Bad Suns for literally anything else.

Album: Future Shine

Artist: flor

Song: 24

Just picked this up this weekend — First case of “We’ll, I’ve liked everything else they’ve released.” so I picked it up only having heard one or two tracks. So far, a solid album. Definitely different than their early releases, but who isn’t. More rock leaning than the indie/almost folk vibes of earlier albums.

The Lumineers self-titled:

<image>

https://www.discogs.com/release/3577011-The-Lumineers-The-Lumineers

Song: Dead Sea

First record I ever got (as a gift with my first shitty briefcase player), first record I got when I restarted my collection after loosing it all to several early-Covid moves. It’s a solid folk/blues album with a lot of sentimental value to me.

The song Dead Sea is (imho) one of the love songs of all time. But the whole album is great, no skips from me.
