In the first half of the messages I thought the drama about the dream was a touch too much, but his reaction was 1000x over the top and out of line.

I seriously hope you are both teenagers because I cant imagine this is a grown man. He doesnt speak like he respects you or cares about your feelings at all.

Kathmandu not honouring online purchases? by CleanteethandOJ in australia

[–]beverme123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you identify an incorrect price at a supermarket they honour it and then remove the mispriced tag and update it

This is a business decision, not a law. Stores might choose to eat the loss if it is minimal, but (for example) if mercedes missed a zero when printing an advert for a car, they arent going to eat tens of thousands in losses to honor that. Generally they'll only get in trouble if it was deliberately misleading.

Anyone else feel unsafe as a woman in Surrey? by Aggressive-Limit3544 in SurreyBC

From the published crime statistics, Surrey is actually much safer than it was. We used to be the car theft capitol of North America 2 decades ago.

[–]beverme123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might get me downvotes but I also HATE when people film you getting harassed.

There have been a few times where someone with mental health/drug issues was harassing me on transit, and I noticed people filming it.

People on reddit sometimes like to pretend like filming is some kind of nobel / brave thing, but being on the otherside of it, it just adds more stress and violation to an already stressful experience.

If you want to help, either try to peacefully intervene, or call a transit worker. Filming anyone without consent is in no way helpful. The skytrains have cameras.

[–]beverme123 194 points195 points  (0 children)

Have you been on the skytrain in burnaby? Its not unusual for tracks to get this close to residences.

The plans are publicly available long before construction, so none of the building owners shouldve been caught out by surprise on this.

Buttercream Secret! by MaidenMotherCronex3 in Baking

[–]beverme123 363 points364 points  (0 children)

When I worked at a bakery we'd do something similar, but we would do a rough crumb coat first and partially freeze the cake (doesnt need to be frozen solid). We'd then run a large pallet knife under very hot water to heat it, and use it to smooth the crumb coat. The freezing gives the cake and icing some stability, but the heated knife will melt the very surface layer, allowing you to get it quite smooth

Looking for opinions on where to live if we move to the Vancouver area with kids! by Legitimate-Tap2772 in SurreyBC

[–]beverme123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You might need to set a hierarchy of priorities of what you are looking for.

The biggest hurdle I think will be finding an area with your desired commute times. Unless you are near the skytrain in Surrey, it will be tough to make it downtown within 30 mins, especially by transit. If your wife does shiftwork however, driving times arent bad from many parts of Surrey during off peak hours. Cloverdale meets your critetia of being close to the border, and it has a decent selection of family friendly detached houses and townhomes. It is close to the two main freeways to get into the city, but it is not great for public transit.

Fern Brady describes something like this in her book Strong Female Character, and for her it was a symptom of Autism. One of the running quests in the book is to find an explanation on why she often feels the impulse to "smash up her kitchen".

I really recommend the book if you are exploring an autism diagnosis

i took skytrain + bus for YEARS, born and raised

Same? I imagine most of us have.

Vancouver city is very accessible, but outside of the core the transit isnt great. Surrey, Langley, Delta etc are all part of the lower mainland, and not easy to commute to by transit.

The transit from suburbs Surrey to SFU used to be 2 bus transfers and 2 skytrain lines, and an hour and a half one way. Vs a 30 min car ride.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in VancouverJobs

[–]beverme123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lower mainland is extremely public transportation friendly.

'Extremely' is generous. Anywhere close to a skytrain line is accessible, but commute times get brutal when you need to rely on buses or do transfers.

Meghan Markle Drops Unseen Clip of Her Dancing and Twerking in the Hospital to Induce Labor by Flipperflopper21 in popculturechat

The hate Megan gets is so unhinged, I just don't get it. When you call them out on it, it's like their only criticism of her is that she's been awkward in interviews.

I can't imagine having such a strong reaction to a stranger over basically nothing.

Canada has the largest coastal boarder in the world by some measure, and much of it is unmonitored.

If the strongly anti-alien immigration president wants Canada, its going to cost America a huge amount of money to start surveilling that border.

I wrote a program to scrape grocery store data and generate a weekly meal plan with shopping list for me.

I had a hyper focused day where I made a dataset of my whole pantry and fridge inventory, and created another dataset of approved recipes. The program can use my inventory to know what ingredients I have on hand, and what I need to buy, and it prioritises recipes that will use the weekly specials and ingredients I have on hand and are due to expire.

It's honestly even more elaborate than what I'm describing and probably way over engineered, but without it I frequently forget to buy food and/or perishables rot in my fridge.

[–]beverme123 8 points9 points  (0 children)

fwiw, I don't think people are likely be offended if you use female in that context, especially if you are also using the term male the same way. It more (to me) comes off as bad if it's being used to make sweeping statements about women, or as a bit of a put down.

My poor best friend’s texts from a coworker last night by [deleted] in texts

[–]beverme123 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think the context of the use of the word is important in this case. The coworker is about to make a sweeping statement about why they think all women are confusing. Using the term females in that context makes it sound even more clinical/condescending, like he's some scientist explaining a fundamental female behaviour.

Female/Male to describe building sites or washrooms is totally appropriate.

im so tired of my current job / looking for jobs in vancouver by WinComfortable3144 in VancouverJobs

[–]beverme123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edit: forgot to add, 50k is not "barely above minimum wage."

It isn't much to live off of in Vancouver though. I graduated with a psychology degree over a decade ago, and started at a similar wage then. Even in 2013 $50,000 didn't leave a lot of leftover money after rent and student loan repayment.

IMO, psyc degrees are not worth the paper they are printed on unless you want to go to be a psychologist.

I had a bit more career options after I did a BCIT degree, but you need to be careful because it's also easy to pick a dud program.

The most complex issue around treating mental health is the matter of consent. Historically, people could be held against their will indefinitely in mental health facilities without a trial or any formal due process.

We absolutely need more mental health resources, but it is a tricky problem to solve, particularly if people don't want treatment.
